I don't know how difficult it will be to sign some of these high schoolers, but with the international sanctions, it is going to be very difficult to have any measure of depth in the lower minors. Now, I think an argument can be made that the lower minors don't matter that much, but you never know if someone is going to come out of the blue and really rapidly ascend their development arc. Grissom looks to be a guy--at least from early reports--that may fit that description.

Tyler Owens as the 13th rounder from Ocala. He's a UF signee so I know a little about him. Undersized RHP and throws really hard. Believe he's touched 98 this year.

Would’ve been better if he’d been drafted out of Villanelle.

For those who follow the prospect lists, Tyler Owens is a Florida commit and #199 on MLB's Top 200. Undersized RHP, but that was the rap on Vodnik as well.

Another guy who’ll likely require overslot. Good slider, developing change, but height has the “reliever risk” card slapped on him, which hurt his stock as a HS arm. I like the pick at this point—the key will be signing these guys, but at least there’s no pool penalty now if they can’t.

Owens is the first HS pitcher we have taken in this draft. The times they are a-changin.

I’m not sure if that’s more or less surprising than the lack of seniors in senior rounds—but I’m going to say slightly less surprising.

Is “Isaiah” a mistake? Looks like there’s a pretty good Jared Johnson from Smithville HS. He’s another MSU recruit.

Same confusion for me here. Here is a snippet on Jared Johnson, Smithville (MS) high school RHP and Mississippi State commit. Don't know if Isaiah is his first name or if they are two different RHPs.

That said, second HS pitcher in a row.

RHP Jared Johnson (#Braves, 14th) can run his fastball up to 96. Holds 92 deep into games. #mlbdraft

This was what I thought they would do. All 3 top picks I predict will be under. Some of the 4-10 rounders were surprises and will be interesting to see where they come in at. Now they are taking a few gambles to hopefully sign one or two without penalty for those you don’t.

Going to be interesting how many of these we can sign between Grissom, Owens and Johnson. Certainly makes me more excited about this draft if they can do it.

Grissom, Owens, and Johnson are the kind of high schoolers you almost have to take early or wait until after Round 10 because of pool considerations. If you draft those guys mid-second day, you almost have to sign them or lose the pool money and with the Braves not going with any low-buck college seniors on the first or second days, it may have been hard to scratch up enough to assure they would sign.

With this little run early on day-three, I’m suspecting (albeit optimistically) that they know they’ll have a nice chunk left over from the first two days to parlay into today.

Maybe the Braves like the early returns on the Vodnik experiment.

Connor Blair is the first guy who seems full-on organizational filler. I wonder if thus ends the day-three upside plays.

    He’s a 6-0 RF who only hit .291/.362/.522, with a mediocre bb/k (10/32), as a junior for Washington.

Connor Blair was so-so as a junior at Washington, but he was the 2018 ABCA Player of the Year at Butte (CA) Community College. Here's a write-up on that honor: https://www.chicoer.com/2018/06/26/b...-year-by-abca/

Looks to have some power potential.

Or maybe that is what AA wants to do on draft days and Bridges didn’t so they parted ways. Seems more coordinated/strategic than it did on day one.

Perhaps. Only difference I see is that the Braves really went much heavier with college seniors in 2016 and 2017.
