    Hart: No Heyward, Cespedes, Upton

Quote from Hart justifying the trade on MLB Network Radio today: "looking at the market with Cespedes, Upton, Heyward, the dollars we think will be out of where we want to go."

Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

Did he say anything about the top pitchers--Price, Greinke, Cueto. Would it be safe to infer the dollars will be too high for those three as well?

Interesting. I have one question and one concern then.

Question: What, exactly, are we going to spend the money on?

Concern: Overpaying in future assets for current ones if we don't solve holes in the FA market.

I think we're actually in a decent position to have a 3-5 year window to spend some money, even if you overspend a little, since the payroll will presumably be increasing and you will have young, cheap talent ready to step in after that window.

If we don't go after any of these, it's hard to see us bringing back much impact in terms of bats unless we sell quite a bit of the farm.

I agree, thats why I have been suggesting a 5 year 150 million deal for either Price or Greinke. Almost all of our talent is going to be cheap for the next few years. In 5 years our young players will start reaching free agency and arbitration years and a big contract like that is a good placeholder to ensure we have the money at that time. Hart has noted that he went after pitching because young pitching is the best currency when making trades. Teams only need 1 good 2B but they need 12 good pitchers. More like 20 when you consider the injury rates.

With Justin I wonder how much he will actually get after the report of teams being turned off by his attitude. I am 99.99% sure he will sign with the Mets because signing overrated players based on name value to peak fan interest in December is such a Met thing to do.

And he's been in a slump for over 2 months.

I think mid-level free agents without a compensation pick attached might be our main targets. Zobrist and Kazmir to name a couple. I suspect they will cost 10-15M year. We will probably also spend some at catcher, bullpen and the bench.

Heyward is the only one I'd want to sign at this point.

    Heyward and Price.

Then we sign big names in international market next year, and then we trade this pitching surplus we've accumulated for hitting. Then I'll feel better about our chances in 2017.

I want no part of Cespedes and Justin Upton has kind of become a question mark in terms of a huge investment (at least to me). With Heyward, you at least would be getting a guy who can do a lot of things with his glove and his legs that provide value even if he doesn't hit (and he does hit).

Curious to see what they do moving forward.

I mean its probably too early to start signing FA's for a run anyway. Be crappy one more year in 2016, then start signing guys or trading for players nearing their prime...

Honestly? Best idea I’ve heard. I am sold. Your mouth to Hart’s ears.

So you’re happy with CB at catcher? Think the Gwinnett rebound is real? I’d love to hear how Snyder is doing with that checklist and the preparation and stuff.

I'm not sure where the offensive improvements are going to come from if we're unwilling to spend. We can't keep trading Alex Wood's and Jose Peraza's for injury prone older hopefully above average players. That's not sustainable

I'd be ok with bringing AJ back. Give CB more time I suppose... I mean we have enough pitching to try and get a young catcher in the minors somewhere.
