Depends on the amount guaranteed in the first few years, since he is likely to opt out. The Nats already made an offer of 10/300, so they were offering more on a per year basis.

#Braves hired Dana Brown as VP, scouting. Move came 2 days after their fired scouting dir. Brian Bridges & scouting advisor Roy Clark. Brown has ties to Braves GM Anthopoulos; served past 9 years as a Blue Jays special asst. to GM. Was previously Expos/Nats scouting director.

Anyone who watches baseball will see teams, every year, that will be approaching the end of a contention window, be terrible, or be sitting in the dreaded 75-80 win limbo. I think its pretty easy to identify each team in a situation like that and, usually, I think a rebuild is the best course of action long term. Sometimes I'm wrong. A year ago I thought the Angels were in the absolute worst position in baseball, with a team that couldn't contend and their most valuable trade chip being virtually untradeable because of how cost prohibitive he is. They also had the worst farm in baseball by far and huge albatross contracts limiting their payroll. Fast forward about 18 months and they got super lucky with Shohei Ohtani and managed to build at least a semi-respectable farm. They haven't proven that they can really contend yet, but I like their long term outlook enough where I don't think they need to rebuild anymore.

But most of the time, if a team isn't in a contention window, I think the prudent move is to commit fully to a rebuild rather than trying to compete against really long odds. A lot of the time those teams that are close to contending, but not quite there, have enough valuable assets where they can do a quicker rebuild than teams who allow their contention window to end because they let all of their assets walk. The Royals are gonna be in really rough shape for a long time because they let that happen. They thought they were competing in 2016 when they really weren't and its screwed up that organization for years.

And I get how rebuilds suck for the casual fan, but for me I actually really enjoyed our rebuild. It sucked losing, but watching our farm system grow into one of the best I've ever seen and dreaming on some of our top prospects was pretty enjoyable for me. I think we can have a long-sustained contention window, but if we ever get to the point where it looks like it is coming to an end, I'll be advocating a rebuild like I would for any other team.

I believe in re-tooling and selling when it is time to sell. I don't really believe in burning things to the ground. I understand why the Braves did what they did and I think it was the most interesting thing they'd done in a long, long time.

But, I don't really want to see them get to that place again. I don't see it as the natural and inevitable and preferable end to a cycle.

nscapi and I both admire the Cardinals, I think. But I see them as a fairly aggressive organization when it comes to taking their shots at titles. I just think they rarely make very stupid decisions and they have an amazing ability to develop talent to keep their re-tooling periods from hitting rock bottom.

IMO, Pache for Peralta is pretty bad.

I have sympathy for the idea that winning championships is the goal and that being too precious about prospects is something to be avoided. I find people around here exceedingly precious about prospects.

But being willing to deal prospects doesn't mean you throw them around willy nilly to get short term, less than ideal, fixes at positions. That's the thing you work hard to avoid having to do. you can find a better way of preserving some of that value.
Does Albies for Dee Gordon represent a gross overpay?

Los Angeles will take on $3.6MM of Martin’s salary, with the Jays paying the other $16.4MM of what’s still due, per Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca

I think the Marlins will require Ian Anderson a possible deal w Braves. Perhaps Riley also and something else. Not sure. Marlins may need to send back another player to make it all work from what I understand. It’s fluid.

I actually wouldn't mind giving Anderson away if that's what it takes. If it's Anderson, Riley, and Flowers I don't think it's question.

sounds like he knows a bit but nothing definite, which seems normal in this situation. It’s interesting that Anderson is consistently someone he brings up. Riley as well, but Ian even more so

Really? I have no idea of the surplus value numbers, but at a glance that seems like way too much to me.

I’m one of the few Realmuto skeptics (in terms of the Braves’ resource-deployment), and I’ve come around on Riley over the past year, but even I would do Anderson, Riley, and a lower-tier prospect (or Flowers, obviously, but I don’t think Miami will really want or be satisfied with him as the third piece).

I am not as high on Anderson, so I am more willing to move him than Riley. Anderson is someone we should sell high on now IMO.

Mish also said that another player would potentially be coming to Atlanta, and he mentioned it being a reliever. I wouldn’t mind getting Steckenrider.

Riley plus Anderson plus filler makes sense for JTR, especially if Anderson’s low spin rate has him as a guy the Braves aren’t high on. Flowers also being in the deal would make some sense.

The additional player the Marlins are sending has to be off the MLB roster, as it wouldn’t make sense for them to send a prospect. While an Anderson/JTR combo would be pretty amazing, it would also cost more in terms of prospect capital. I’m guessing the additional player is someone the Marlins would like to dump for salary relief...maybe a BP arm

    Maybe Conley? Maybe Straily?
