Same reason David Irving would rather get high than make millions on football for a few years.

He is a big dude. But I couldn’t tell you if he was going down or up since I have never seen him before. It was funny to see him hit the food truck before it even opened. I am sure he was just chatting the cook. But he was the only guy that stopped by. I will say it was pretty neat to be on the back fields. I sat in the stands with tarnock and two other no name players as we watched a Braves scrimmage.

But to your point. I agree. I hope he can get right and be a producer. If he flakes out because he couldn’t put it together is understandable. Flaming out because he couldn’t get in shape other than round is a shame. The countless millions should be enough motivation to work on conditioning.

Saw this on twitter, probably means nothing but VERY interesting comments from AA.

Alex Anthopoulos on #Braves rotation "we're gonna surprise people the way we break camp,we're taking the best guys, we don't care how much time you have..if you throw strikes & have stuff you'll get the ball"

Newcomb doesn't throw strikes, but has stuff. In or out?

    Cubs Game 2 Teheran
    Cubs Game 3 Touki

Folty comes back in late April. One of Touki or Wilson is sent down.

Eventually Soroka and Gohara will force their way into the rotation. No need to hurry. Let em have 2-3 months in the minors.
You sure you wouldn't throw Fried in Philly in place of either Touki or Wilson? Would be nice to throw a lefty against Harper.

We missed such a great opportunity to sell Newcomb this offseason. Now his stock is going to be even lower a year from now.

I'm not near as down on newcomb as the rest of you. He's not a top end starter with his control issues, but he's not expensive. He gave us 164 ip last season at 1.9 fWAR at age 24. Maybe he never hones his control in, but I still think he's valuable as a backend starter that's capable of beating anyone when on. I'd keep em till he costs money

what makes you think it was a "great opportunity" to trade him? i'm pretty sure every other team can see his very obvious flaws. his value was probably lower than we realized. and hey, we'll see if he can make something work in the pen. could be a valuable lefty RP.

I agree. If he just repeats last season, he'll be valuable as long as he's cheap. I know a lot of people are down on him, but he improved last year from his rookie season, and as you said, was at 1.9 fWAR through 160 innings. Still a lot to like with Newk. The main thing is to stop nibbling. He's at his best when he attacks hitters.

Newk routinely misses arm side and up by 2'. That is not the result of nibbling.

Yeah Newk is the most frustrating to watch. He isn’t trying to fool you. He just forgets how to release the ball. Teams are going to be even more patient with him this year. I know I would make him at least throw one strike before I started offering at anything else.

He has demonstrated no hit stuff vs elite opponents. I don’t understand the anyone but him sense around here when he’s also cheap.

Particularly when the alternative is someone like max fried who addresses none of the control concerns.

His almost no hitter was whenthe team swung at a lot of his pitches team normally don’t swing at. Teams are not going to do that this year. I have watched this kid a lot in minors and mlb. Never waivers and never wrong. If he starts missing high and away to righties in the first inning he will not be good. If he doesn’t then expect 2 runs or less.

Fried missed two full years of development, and has demonstrated far better control this spring.

While I agree it's tough to argue you should give up on ANY young arms with upside while they're cheap, there's little doubt which one of those two I hope will improve their walk rates.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?
