    Jair Jurrjens Gets 80-Game Suspension

NEW YORK -- Veteran Major Leaguer Jair Jurrjens was suspended for 80 games on Thursday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball said Jurrjens, who is currently with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City, received an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for exogenous Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The 31-year-old right-hander is expected to begin serving the punishment immediately. Jurrjens, who signed with the Dodgers as a free agent on April 4, is 4-3 with a 4.64 ERA in 11 Pacific Coast League outings this season, 10 of which were starts. He's struck out 44 and walked 18 in 54 1/3 innings, most recently pitching on June 7 when he lasted two innings at Iowa.

Remember when some folks wanted to sell high on JJ based on mediocre stuff, and the pozzy-Barves screamed "he just knows how to pitch!!"?

    Haha, good times.

JJ was better than Hanson. It's a shame that knee injury sent his career into this death spiral.

He was never going to be better than Hanson.

    Also, he's only 31? yikes.

Actually he was better than Hanson. JJ had a total of 10.7 bWAR in his 5 seasons with Atlanta averaging 2.14 bWAR per season. Hanson had a total bWAR of 7.2 in his 4 seasons in Atlanta averaging 1.8 bWAR per season.

Why don't you educate us on it? Explain how it really works.

JJ had that one excellent season, in which he should have been NL starter in the ASG. Despite the other post about his demise being a result of the knee injury, that was only part of the story. Even when healthy, he was susceptible to getting rocked early and often. Opponents have scored 7 runs by the 3rd inning, even against a weak AAA team. Yet, how come his bWAR doesn't indicate as such? Nobody at Fangraphs could detect a legitimate chance at a comeback? Not even a little bit?

I don't see why saying Jurrjens was better than Hanson is controversial. Heck, Jurrjens was better a few of those years than all of our pitchers this year.

JJ was better but Hanson had a higher ceiling of talent

it's not crazy to say but i understand the debate

I mean that's fair but their careers are both over. I'm not sure how much ceilings have to do with the discussion at this point.

I would take anything Hanson did from his debut until he got hurt in 2011 over what JJ did in 08 and 09.

In case anyone forgot what Hanson did over that time frame he had 72 starts and went 31-19. 8.26 K/9, 2.84 BB/9, 0.68 HR/9, 2.99 ERA and 3.33 FIP.

Those are excellent numbers. Sadly he had a rotator cuff tear and his career quickly went downhill.

At peak, Jurrjens was elite...but that was only that one season. Otherwise, like said, you it was Forrest Gump's box of chocolates. Maybe a decent start. Maybe 3 innings with 7 runs allowed. The bWAR people can't seem to reconcile, but whatever. As far as comparison with Hanson, no dog in this hunt. However, will say first hand that Hanson had far less attitude, for whatever that's worth. In either case, we can all agree with '"sample size," as both pitchers had their major league careers tragically cut short.

The Braves went through a ton of what seemed to be good pitchers that did not pan out for very long. You could even go way back to Horacio Ramirez, Damian Moss, etc. Then I remember trying to compare that little lefty that worked offseason at Home Depot to Cole Hamels, he barely lasted two seasons. Then suddenly we found JJ, Hanson, Medlen, Beachy, Minor, and they all flamed out quickly. Makes it easier to understand why management has decided to way overstock in pitching prospects.

Want to know what would be really cool? Somebody should launch into a rant about Kolb, "Jordesi," the Texerira and Drew trades. After that, maybe somebody can recycle a fat joke. It's extra funny after the 75th time!
