Not necessarily. He may not have accepted this deal with the Giants. He's a hometown guy... sounds like he really only wanted to be here or in Baltimore... may have taken more for San Fran to sign him... or maybe he just didn't want to go there period.

The Bay area is pretty nice. I lived there for 9 years. Even a southern boy like Huddy likes it. But the taxes are higher.

The money in the deal is good, I think he replaces Heyward decently offensively, and I genuinely like Markakis... my only thing is I don't really get it yet. I am going to wait for the full off season to commence but as of now it just seems like a move to make a move... doesn't really improve the team at this juncture and it doesn't really fit a rebuilding style... so all I can assume and hope to assume is that its one small piece to towards the end goal. Otherwise, if we were going to suck we could have just put Terdo or Cunningham out there until we could happen on some real OF talent. Something else is coming... I am still hopeful BJ will somehow be moved and I think someone unexpected will be traded... maybe Kimbrel (although Gattis or Jupton will also be dealt... and hopefully CJ). Could Shae Simmons step in for Kimbrel successfully?

I know its a fantastic place to live, but that area may not be comfortable for everyone... also I think Huddy would have signed back with us if we had offered him anything respectable... Markakis seems to have really wanted to come home.

Here's an Orioles board on them talking about it, some upset, mainly because they dont have anyone to replace him especially with Cruz gone as well.

Great, we signed an aging, past-his-prime outfielder with overrated defense.

    What could possibly go wrong?

Where I draw pause is at the question of whether or not this acquisition was ultimately necessary, given the team's position to contend in 2015. If Hart were to keep Justin Upton around Markakis would be a welcome addition at the top of the order and a palatable substitution for Heyward -- especially if you are choosing to accept the assertion that he was demanding $25MM from Atlanta.

However, seeing as how the Braves appear to have no real intention of keeping J. Upton we have to treat Markakis as an integral addition to the roster. And he just isn't - that's not an attack, just an honest assessment of the skills he brings to the table at this stage of his career. I accept that he will help unite the clubhouse and embody consistency across the board, but, again, at a real premium cost to an organization that is resource deficient.
Good points. I think the AAV on Markakis is about right. I don't like the length of the contract. I think it's an odd move in some respects. It gives the impression that we think we can contend, but, like you say, Markakis isn't a "core" type player at this point in his career.

Send them BJ as a replacement. Problem solved :-)

Can't wait to see Markakis roaming RF with his Gold Glove defense in his age 35 season.

Left field is where aging right fielders go to die. Pretty sure they have those in Cobb County.

In a decline? Evidenced by 1 season in 2013? Really?

He's been as consistent as can be. And if he doesn't get hit and break his thumb in 2012 then he likely has his best season since 2008.

    2015 & 2016 in right

2017 & 2018 in left and the classic veteran presence...

But i mentioned it in my other post seing the Heyward deal (and the inevitable Upton and Gattis deals) it makes little sense. You either go full on rebuild mode, or contend mode. Going it half way will only lead to failiure.
Exactly. I imagine that the FO is probably (rightfully) concerned about PR and ticket sales amidst this pseudo-firesale, but 'rebuilding' is not a new concept or one that has decimated fan bases (see: ChC and Cleveland, among others). So why not go about it the right way?

If Hart continues to add through subtraction, say, Headley, or a last minute play for Lester, then this approach is definitely viable. But that just seems unlikely ... and leaves most of us scratching our heads.

He won't be with us then. He is only signed through his age 34 season.

    Gross.

They probably think they sold high on Heyward and bought low on Markakis.

We know that or sure? Being from Atl area had nothing to do with Nick's decision? We know what San Fran's offer was?

So if San Fran offered 4/40 it would be a good deal for them?

Hometown discounts are about as rare as hometown bonuses. Are we sure the Braves didn't give him a hometown bonus?
