Lewis has never been a slam dunk option.

This board generally like Lewis because of his supposed high ceiling, but that's generally based upon him being an athletic black athlete that has good stats, even justifying the hype by saying "well Kris Bryant had greats stats in a week conference and look how he turned out". The huge difference there is Bryant never had the contact issues that Lewis had which has been cited by pretty much every major scouting outlet. So if any team brings him into a workout and they aren't impressed, then it's beyond reasonable to take a hard pass. This is the most important draft pick the Braves have had since the early 90's and we need to nail this/these picks

If they draft Anderson and the underslot/overslot scheme fails, then every person on this board should be pissed. This is just as important as the Shelby Miller trade, IMO.

While I'm sure Anderson would be a serviceable pick, there is such a perfect fit of need and BPA with Lewis should he fall. Plus, as a college upperclassman, he would not be that much more expensive than Anderson. If Lewis goes 1 or 2, then I would see more sense in this, but even then, it's a huge gamble that someone worthwhile would be at 40.

Who cares? 75 percent at a minimum of these players drafted never see the big leagues. Don't see the idea of getting mad about some pick the Braves do or don't make.

The more I read/think about this, the more I think the "deal" that the Braves have cut is for him at 40...not 3.

What's the time in between picks? I don't have all day like NFL with 15 minutes in between picks.

It won't be terribly long between picks. They have to get through 77 picks tonight.

There's zero chance Anderson would fall like that. His minimum number to sign before he goes back to school is $3 million, which means that basically any team drafting in the top 20 could make that work. I would argue that it would be easier to orchestrate a Groome drop than Anderson because Groome's threat to go to college is a lot more serious and his rumored price of $4 million excludes more teams from drafting him.

If our goal is to get Groome and Anderson, why on earth would it be Anderson that we took at 3? I guess you could argue that once we passed on him at 3, we could work out a deal with him for less than we would have to pay him if we took him 3rd, but that seems like a pretty steep gamble. It seems like you'd want to make sure you at least got the more talented of the two.

Could anyone dig up more info on Anderson?

We have been hearing for weeks that we like him, and he is rising hard up boards. I mean taking a 10ish talent at 3 for well underslot isn't the worst strategy, it just has to pay off later. You can't do this and come up empty at 40\44.

that is true of the OVERALL draft, but a huge majority of future MLB players come out of rounds 1 and 2. After those two rounds, yes it indeed becomes a total guessing game. Tho a high ranked player may not develop into a star, most future players were drafted early.

Maybe it's Cox that's pushing hard for his pick like he did with Wood.

I've been a fan of Ray since the beginning of the year. I'd actually prefer him to Lewis.

I didn't consider that point (that more teams would be able to afford Anderson's $3M price tag, versus Groome's $4M) following the Braves' selection at #3. But my train of thought is that the "deal" might be for him to publicly state that he's asking for, say, $4M...so less teams are likely to waste their time picking him (and thus falling to us at 40). Similar to the Daz Cameron situation.

We also need to consider the risk of taking the more expensive guy at #3. For example, if we draft Groome at #3...and he doesNT end up signing, we will lose the $6M slotted for that pick...and there goes our strategy of drafting a guy overslot at 40 or 44.

I think you will see hard slotting come soon (oh man that sentence! lmao)

The union doesn't care about draft picks as the majority will never be members, so I could see MLB saying "if you get drafted, you get X at each spot, no more no less"
