Maybe AA lost a bet and figured this was the best way to pay it back?

Possibly. Also possible AA views them as a trading partner down the line so an act of goodwill faith.

When you don’t upgrade your pen in the offseason, this is what happens. You either have to pay for it by giving up prospects you don’t want to give up or take on a bad contract. I like the moves we made. Now let’s keep/get guys healthy

Look at the relievers signed in offseason. They've underperformed.

I'm not against these moves since we didn't give up our best depth of prospects. And better we overpay and take on salary dump of Melancon while he's actually pitching well then signing him in offseason and not knowing his form for the upcoming year.

Plenty free agent Rp have been serviceable. Some traded at this deadline. Signing fa isn’t the only way to upgrade your pen, but you know that.

Given the hand we’ve been dealt, AA has done a good job rebuilding the pen. Jackson has been a good temp closer, but the clock has struck midnight

If AA was going to take on a huge BP salary for 2020, he should have at least taken on a BP arm that is dominant...like Ian Kennedy.

The Melancon move is really disappointing, and reeks of AA needing to get something done as the clock expired.

Kennedy will make 2.5 million more than Melancon next year. That might’ve factored into it.

    Also, the Royals are stupid.

With the money coming off the books after the season, it will make his contract more bearable. So I'm not all that bothered. The biggest hole in the team was worked on and all the major prospects are still in the organization.

This is ultimately my thought on the trade. I’d give this specific deal a C- because of the money, but getting a clear bullpen upgrade for Tristan Beck is a worthwhile move if we have the payroll flexibility to do so.

I don’t love taking on the money. It’s obviously going to mitigate our ability to fix other holes in the roster in the off-season.

With that said, this is effectively a 1 year deal for a good contributor who has a reasonable chance of increasing his performance to his previous elite level. I think this is another clear example of AA being willing to overpay with AAV in return for shorter term commitment.

I think you can effectively rule the Braves out on any free agent that asks for longer than a two year deal.

I guess I'm more annoyed that we went over slot to sign Beck in the first place. Nothing against Beck and I can be proven wrong, but the organization seemed to have a love affair with the guy. Hope he can at least get healthy and have a legitimate shot.

As for Melancon, he's on the other side of the mountain at this point, but when he throws his first pitch for the Braves, he'll have outdone O'Day. But honestly, I don't know if he's better than Webb at this point, but with Webb's recent injury issues, I don't know if he can be relied upon.

I'd imagine it was Bridges who had a love affair with him, and Bridges is in San Francisco now. That's probably why they liked him.

This is my take. We added one reliever between the end of last season and the start of this one, Tomlin. And he wasn't added until the end of ST. We also saw a relatively reliable reliever depart in Brad Brach.

The only way the pen wasn't going to be a problem was if we had perfect health and no regressions. With guys like Viz, O'Day, and Minter, that was never going to happen.

So here we are. In first place and seeing our pen crumble. We had to add multiple relievers and ended up overpaying for one.

it should be stated again. if the Braves signed a couple RPs in the offseason, based on how they've gone, it's likely at least one of them would've ended up being a disaster. so now instead of 1 year at too much money (Meloncon), you have 3-4 years of too much money.

    choice seems pretty easy.

Looking at RP's signed in the offseason.

    Familia 3/30 been bad.
    DRob 2/20+, needs TJ.
    Otto and Britton been good.
    Soria has a 4.65 ERA.
Kimbrel has been a disaster for the Cubs.

But i do agree he needed to improve the pen.

better hope you chose the right time bomb that hasn't gone off yet.
Tomlin/Swarzak have been more valuable than some of the high-priced RPs. but these people would've been happy to spend the money on them. of course, when they flopped, they'd also blame AA. it's almost as if GMs shouldn't listen to fans.
