Spoke with #Braves’ Hart. Adamant about keeping JUp/Gattis unless he gets exactly what he wants. Could add SP, 2B and go for it instead.

    Per Rosenthal
The more I think about it, the more I think Hart is going to trade them both, or neither.

For example, if JUp can bring back Walker, and Gattis can bring back an OFer and a guy for 2B, he makes both trades.

If he can't get exactly what he wants for either player he will keep both and just add a FA SP and 2B, and go into 2015 with Gattis and JUp in the middle of the order.

Personally I'm 100% in favor of dealing Gattis. He cannot play catcher long-term. He is not a left-fielder. He would have tremendous value as a DH. Whether or not we get that value offer remains to be seen. I don't see a reason to keep him (and I don't think other teams think we intend to, which is why we may not get that value). Other teams are probably looking to get their DH without giving up prospects right now. I would have dealt Gattis for the package the A's just got for Moss. Slide Semien right in at 2B. But maybe we aren't getting offers like that.

Honestly, I think I would be happy in either case, especially since we would likely extend a QO to J-Up, and would get a draft pick if he chooses to leave.

You can't just let Upton walk and get a draft pick.

You either trade him or extend him this offseason. There is no other option.

I'm assuming that if we keep him this year, we will put the pieces around him to make a postseason run. I am NOT okay with keeping him, missing the playoffs, and then only receiving a draft pick for our troubles.

That's why this thing is complicated. No one really knows where Hart and Company are headed for 2015. We know the plan is to compete for a WS in 2017, but next year's plans are foggy. My fear is that they are foggy to the FO also, and that they are reacting to the market and hoping for the best. I hope I am wrong.

Sure there is. If you can't the proper return for Justin, then there is no use trading him. Would rather have the pick then to get a middling return for Justin.

For Casey Kotchman and Stephen Marek, maybe.

Rangers interested in Braves C-OF Evan Gattis. But Braves want RHP top prospect Alex Gonzalez and that's a deal-breaker for Rangers.

That was a failure because for some reason the front office demanded a first baseman back. it should always be getting the most value possible.

Indicated Upton would be flipped for pitching if they got him, but reinforced that their top prospects aren't in play

Too bad trading Heyward already showed we're not willing to "go for it" so Hart has no real leverage.
All you need is Hart and Cox.

The #Braves told one American League team that if they want Evan Gattis, they have to take BJ Upton too.

rangers sure seem to have a lot of untouchable prospects for a team that wants to make some trades.

Yup. If teams want to win, they need to make trades. Gattis is so cheap right now and such a perfect DH, that it almost baffles me that we are having any trouble making a trade for him.

I don't think Hart would have any trouble trading Gattis. The issue is he wants to fleece a team, so he has to wait for a team to get desperate. The industry thinks the Cards overpaid for Heyward, and Hart wants someone to overpay even more for JUp and Gattis.

Are you really going to start proclaiming that as a universally accepted belief that now that we've seen it mentioned in one article?

Plus, the market for power hitters is basically ravenous right now ... much more active than it was when Hart moved Heyward.

I think the Braves knew what they wanted for Heyward and moved him when it was presented in the exact form they desired (young, high-ceiling controllable arms).
