Braves Dominate SL Top Prospects list

The Mississippi Braves had one of the worst records in the Southern League in 2017, but you'd never know it based on Baseball America's Top 10 prospects list.

    Here is full list:

    1. Ronald Acuna (Miss.)
    2. Nick Senzel (Pens.)
    3. Michael Kopech (Birm.)
    4. Mike Soroka (Miss.)
    5. Luiz Gohara (Miss.)
    6. Austin Riley (Miss.)

    7. Luis Castillo (Pens.)
    8. Corbin Burnes (Biloxi)
    9. Nick Gordon (Chatt.)
    10. Kolby Allard (Miss.)

Surprised to see Riley over Allard, given the way the latter finished the season.

For some reason a large portion of the scouting community has soured on Allard. It will be interesting to see if that was with good reason.

As I've been saying though for a few months - Riley has dramatically improved his stock. Between Wilson/Riley/Touki its hard to say who showed the biggest developmental leap in the system.

The Baseball America write up said Allard pitched 88-90, touching 93. I'm not surprised these publications are souring on him with that being the case.

I only saw Allard one start, but that seemed to be the case. Soroka was a far more polished pitcher when I saw him one day later.

If he is consistently sitting at that velocity range then his ceiling significantly changes.

But I was promised he was, if not the very best, then one of the very best LHP starter prospects in the game.

I mean, he was and probably is. If the velo issues go beyond him pitching ~60 more innings this year than last year at age 19 against high level competition, then yeah, his ceiling changes. But if it's just fatigue and adjustment, he's one of the best LHP prospects in the game. There's a reason even BA had him as the top LHP on their midseason top 100.

Right, he definitely was and still kind of is.
He's also 19. His velocity hasn't necessarily topped out.

If he is this good at 88-90 mph them imagine how good he would be if his velocity comes back. He probably just needs to add some muscle.

I'm not going to depend on velocity gains though it does happen.

My question is what is the most velocity that Allard has show in the minor and where was he consistently at various points of the season. If he's always been very low 90s, that is probably where he is going to land. When the velocity dipped might be good to know too, if it did dip.

I guess what I look at is the dude wasn't striking guys out for much of the season (at least not a high rate) and then finished the season on a tear at 19 in AA with lots of Ks. I'd be interested to know what he was doing to get those different results.

This has happened before. Allard was just about consensus #1 overall draft pick. Then his stock dropped.

That was because of his back injury, though. There's no indication that he hurt it again.

Promised? A little hyberole perhaps. We all have opinions, but IMHO don't need the mocking type comments.

I was channeling my inner Enscheff to needle thethe, who I think's gone prematurely off the deep end in his Allard advocacy (among other things...).

Exaggeration swings both ways; if we "don't need the mocking type comments" then we don't need excessively/unjustifiably/wholly-uncritically ebullient praise of the team, either.

FYI - I'm still very comfortable with my proclamation about Allard (aside from Gohara being the best pitching prospect of all time :) )
