You do have the right to be wrong. The right to have nonfactual opinions is very important, but it doesn't make you, Joe, or Tom any less wrong about how to value a player's skill. If someone actually digs in to how valuable some analytics are and how highly they correlate to the success of any given player, it becomes basically impossible to deny the fact that they are better predictors than any 'traditional' stat like RBI or pitcher wins. Stats like that are obviously archaic and are based off assumptions that are insane if you really think about it. RBI as a predictor assumes that having your teammates get on base in front of you is an actual, repeatable skill. That is insanity.

So did I. But that didn't mean that I developed an opinion that trigonometry is actually wrong. That is basically what denying analytics equates to. Seeing math that you don't get and just pointing and saying... "yeah, that isn't correct"

Its widely accepted that just going by batting avg and rbi is a poor way to value offensive performance.

Jeff's kin have always been well represented in these parts.

In the same Philly @ Mets game I referenced earlier, Krapler came out to argue that his pitcher didn't swing on strike three when he was hit by a pitch, he was out there a solid three minutes arguing and the dumb Phillies announcer says "What is Calloway doing coming out here? This has nothing to do with him!" I'm thinking we have this little thing called the pace of play rule and Calloway's pitcher was just standing on the mound so he had every right to come out and clap and say "let's go, play ball." I was thinking shoo Krapler off the field somehow or just eject him.

Joe Simpson makes ESPN headlines insinuating Soto is older than his proclaimed age.

Joe Simpson = Enscheff this whole time?

And now he has managed to piss off the Nats GM by making a comment about Soto's age. I think it might be time for a whole new announce team.

I'm with Joe on this. Soto doesn't look anything like a 19 year old. And as I said in the game thread, Rizzo's overreaction makes it more suspicious. He protests too much.

I'm ok with Chip, Glavine, Frenchy, Byrd, etc, but Joe has gotta go.

Joe’s comment tonight is being way overblown. First of all, it seemed pretty benign. He just said something to the effect that Soto is very well built for a 19 year old. Secondly-Who cares? Its not like Soto would be the first player to lie about his age. Its not like lying about one’s age will get them supended. Social media simply blows things like this way out of proportion. I don’t see why his teammates would be so outraged. They should just ignore the comment. But today, so many people want an excuse to be outraged and then rant on twitter about it so they can get noticed too.

Logically it doesn't make any sense. Soto obviously has a ton of talent. If he's really not 19 then why did he wait so long to sign with the Nats? Those kids have nothing and sign as soon as they are 16. Joe just sounds dumb and trying to discredit a historic season.

Soto is built like an absolute house and looks older than his age but as I said in the game thread, age fraud hasn't been going on for a while in Latin countries. Most likely, he's 19 and just looks like he's 25-27.

It's just incredible what he's doing though. You see disciplined guys like Rendon still swing at pitches out of the zone more than every once in a while, he rarely does period. I think the main reason the Braves were able to get him out today was Newcomb deciding to reveal a pitch he hasn't thrown much after the homer and Biddle pitching him backwards.
Aggression with prospects is fine, but being stupid is not. There should be a way to find a happy medium between a Pirates like idea of being overly cautious with prospects and going stupidly fast with prospects.

I don’t care about age fraud in baseball-never did. But how do we know for certain that it isn’t still going on? Just because no one talks about it? Because no one has been caught in the last ten years?

Lots of players have waited and then years later are suddenly discovered to be years older than they say. If you're not discovered until late or are a late bloomer then you can make a lot more saying you're 16 instead of 23. If you're 23 you probably don't get signed at all.

For real. If you're a late bloomer in the Dominican Republic, you likely got zero attention when you were 16. And if you're say 21 or 22 and start displaying real talent, it's more beneficial to portray yourself as young as you can to get as much money as you can.

Also, I think it happened with the Braves recently in Edward Salcedo.
