Wren signed both Freeman and Simmons to nice long term contracts. Despite his faults he wouldn't have traded Simmons like Coppy did. Thankfully Dave Stewart at least brought us Swanson. But I would still rather have Simmons at short than Swanson. Swanson's bat has been very good this year but he had bad range numbers and a -1 DRS. Soroka and DK would be even more dominate with a Simmons behind them. A lot of the cheap soft hit balls up the middle would be outs with Simmons too.

    Simmons - 1.4 WAR, 13m 29 years old 1 more year at 15m
Swanson - 1.9 WAR, 585,000 25 years old. three more years of arb control

Simmons seems to be the clearly better fielder even now, but overall value isn't much different. Simmons seems to have peaked in the last two seasons at an average to slightly above average offense.

The Angels fans got to see some nice highlight reels the last few years, but no playoffs and only one winning season.

lol @ seems to be, Simmons makes plays Swanson wouldn't even dream about. Swanson hasn't even been good overall defensively this year. He hasn't been terrible either. But thankfully he is having his best season on offense to off-set the year he's had on defense.

The Simmons, Kimbrel, and Olivera deals were so awful that it negated any small wins from Upton and Gattis deals.

The only thing that was a clear.win was the Dave Stewart trade.

Let it not be forgotten that Wren drafted Kimbrel, Gattis, Simmons, Wood, Peraza, and successfully traded for JUpton.

Unfortunately Coppy squandered those incredibly valuable assets.

yes let’s keep pretending 1 year of upton was an incredibly valuable asset.
wren’s record of drafting for long he was around is terrible. it’s already been outlined. terrible.

it’s further hilarious to discount coppy’s trades with arizona (that other GMs around the league didn’t make, of course) yet give wren credit for two guys he had nothing to do with signing.

wren was a bad GM. the team was in good shape while he was here because of players brought in before he was here. he did a horrible job of building around a talented team with poor drafting and downright terrible FA signings.

Upton averaged nearly 4 fWAR per season.

Even for one season, that is a valuable asset.

Not to mention the incredible value we gave away in the other trades

The funny thing is Wren has been gone for 5 years and he has still left a bigger mark on the current team than Coppy

It's true. Our best players were acquired or extented under Wren.

Yeah and our top 30 prospects are mostly coppy and no wren. You are comparing apples and oranges

I'm not saying the Hartcoppy years were barren but when you consider draft position, extra early picks, all the major league talent traded, the money spent on international signings, the returns look unimpressive

I hate the Johns. But you can’t say a race is finished when the starting lines were different. For me the bigger debate is whether I want the dodgers or faillies to win.

Wren basically has Albies, Acuna, Freeman.

Coppy has Riley, Swanson, Ender, Folty, Minter, Nick, Soroka, list goes on with guys like Waters, Pache, Muller, Wright, Contreras in the minors.

You dont have to like Coppy but he's a much bigger reason for the teams success than Wren and it aint close.

Weird that Swanson isn’t good on offense or defense but is half a win better than andrelton for 12m less dollars.
