    Today In Baseball History: August

    August 1st:

    1918: The longest scoreless tie in M.L. history, the Braves and Pirates play 0-0 baseball through 20 innings. The Pirates break the tie with two runs in the top of the 21st and win the game 2-0.

    1923: Broadway producer and Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sells the team to a syndicate led by J.A. Robert Quinn. Frazee will always be remembered for selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1920.

    1941: In a 9-0 Yankees victory over the Browns, Lefty Gomez sets a record in a shutout game with 11 walks.

    1945: Mel Ott joins Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx as the only players in M.L. history with 500 home runs.

    1957: In the Dodgers 12-3 win over the Cubs, Gil Hodges sets a new N.L. record with his 13th grand slam.

    1962: The Red Sox Bill Monbouquette pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the White Sox.

    1975: Billy Martin is named to replace Bill Virdon as Yankees manager. It was the first of five times Martin would be hired by the Yankees.

    1977: Willie McCovey extends his N.L. record with his 18th grand slam in the Giants 9-2 win over the Expos.

    1978: Against the Braves, Pete Rose's N.L. record 44 game hitting streak comes to an end.

    1982: Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1986: The Twins Bert Blyleven records his 3,000th strikeout.

    1994: In the Orioles 1-0 win over the Twins, Cal Ripken Jr. joins Lou Gehrig as the only players to play in 2,000 straight games.

    2002: The Expos trade Cliff Floyd to the Red Sox for two minor leaguers.

    2005: Rafael Palmerio becomes the highest profile player to be suspended for a positive drug test. Earlier in the year at a hearing about steroids in baseball on Capitol Hill, Palmerio wagged his finger at lawmakers and said he had never taken steroids.

    2007: The Royals Buddy Bell announces he will resign as manager at season's end.

    1906: The White Sox begin a then A.L. record 19 game winning streak with a 3-0 victory over the Red Sox.

    1907: Walter Johnson makes his M.L. debut in the Senators 3-2 loss to the Tigers. Another future Hall of Famer, Ty Cobb, gets the first hit off of him.

    1919: The Phillies Fred Luderus plays in his 479th straight game, breaking Eddie Collins M.L. record.

    1921: The eight Chicago White Sox players accused of throwing the 1919 World Series are acquitted by a jury. The jurors lifted the players on their shoulders after the decision is known. Despite the acquittal, Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis the next day says the evidence clearly showed the players fixed the World Series and the players involved in the "Black Sox Scandal" would be suspended for life.

    1932: The Cubs announce manager Rogers Hornsby will be replaced by Charlie Grimm.

    1938: In an experiment, yellow balls are used during the first game of a Dodgers doubleheader sweep against the Cardinals. For the nightcap, they go back to the traditional white balls.

    1979: Yankees catcher Thurman Munson is killed when the plane he was piloting clips a tree and crashes 1,000 feet short of the runway at Akron-Canton Regional Airport. Munson was 32 years old.

    1981: Bob Gibson, Johnny Mize, Rube Foster, and Ernie Harwell are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1982: The USPS unveils a new stamp honoring Jackie Robinson.

    2002: Commissioner Bud Selig fines Reds GM Jim Bowden after his remarks comparing a potential strike to the September 11th attacks. Bowden quickly apologized for the remarks.

    2010: The Brewers and Corey Hart agree to a three year extension worth $26.5 million.

    2011: In the Yankees rain-shortened 6-0 win over the White Sox, Mark Teixeira homers from both sides of the plate for the 12th time, setting a new M.L. record.

    1948: Satchel Paige makes his first M.L. start, pitching seven innings to lead the Indians to a 5-3 win over the Senators.

    1957: Bobby Bragan hears of his firing as Pirates manager over the radio. General manager Joe L. Brown leaked the news before telling Bragan of his dismissal. Phillies third base coach Danny Murtaugh takes over as Pirates manager.

    1961: The Pirates beat the Cardinals 19-0 in the largest shutout in N.L. history.

    1967: A's owner Charley Finley fires manager Alvin Dark because of disagreements on how to handle team discipline. It came after Finely fined and suspended Lew Krausse for reported rowdy behavior on a team flight. Ken Harrelson was also released after he said Finley was a menace to the sport.

    1979: Over 51,000 mourners attend a memorial service at Yankee Stadium for Thurman Munson, who was killed in a plane crash the prior day.

    1986: Willie McCovey, Bobby Doerr, Ernie Lombardi, Bob Prince, and Reds beat writer Earl Lawson are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1987: Twins pitcher Joe Niekro is ejected by home plate umpire Tim Tschida after an emery board is found in his possession. Niekro receives an automatic ten day suspension.

    1989: The Reds set a M.L. record for hits in an inning with 16 in the first, on their way to an 18-1 win over the Astros.

    2002: The Angels and Darrin Erstad agree to a four year extension worth $32 milion.

    2004: Albert Pujos becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 30 home runs in each of his first four seasons.

    1908: The Brooklyn Superbas defeat the Cardinals 3-0 in a game that is played with just one ball.

    1935: Walter Johnson resigns as Indians manager. He is replaced by Steve O'Neill.

    1941: In the third inning of the Dodgers 11-6 win over the Giants, Mickey Owens becomes the first catcher to handle three pop ups in one inning.

    1948: Filling in for Red Barber, who was battling an ulcer, future Hall of Fame announcer Ernie Harwell calls his first game, a 5-4 Dodgers win over the Cubs at Ebbets Field.

    1963: In a 2-1 defeat to the Braves, the Mets Roger Craig ties a N.L. record with his 18th straight loss.

    1971: In a Texas League game, Tommy Walker of the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs pitches a 15-inning no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Albuquerque Dukes.

    1980: The Mariners fire manager Maury Wills and replace him with Darrell Johnson.

    1982: Joel Youngblood drives in the winning run for the Mets in a 7-4 win over the Cubs. During the game, he is traded to the Expos. He flies to Philadelphia to play for his new team against the Phillies and collects a single, making him the first player to record a hit for two different teams on the same day.

    1983: Prior to the fifth inning of a game in Toronto against the Blue Jays, the Yankees Dave Winfield kills a seagull with a warm-up throw. After the game, he is arrested on charges of animal cruelty.

    1985: The White Sox Tom Seaver records his 300th win.

    1985: The Angels Rod Carew records his 3,000th hit.

    1990: The Braves trade Dale Murphy to the Phillies for Jeff Parrett, Jim Vatcher, and Victor Rosario.

    1993: Robin Ventura charges the mound after Nolan Ryan after he gets hit by a pitch. Ryan responds by locking him in a headlock and punching him in the head.

    1994: The Twins Kent Hrbek announces his retirement at season's end.

    1996: Earl Weaver, Ned Hanlon, Jim Bunning, and Bill Foster are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    2005: The Orioles fire manager Lee Mazzilli and replace him with Sam Perlozzo.

    2007: Alex Rodriguez hits his 500th home run.

    2010: Alex Rodriguez hits his 600th home run.

    1901: Orioles first baseman Burt Hart punches umpire John Haskell, resulting in his banishment from baseball for life.

    1921: Radio station KDKA out of Pittsburgh provides the first ever broadcast of a baseball game. Harold Arlin does the play by play as the Pirates defeat the Phillies 8-5.

    1937: An Appalachian League game between the Newport Canners and the Johnson City Soldiers ends in the sixth inning after running out of baseballs. Fan show displeasure by destroying a set of bleachers.

    1940: In a game shortened to six innings by rain, the Browns John Whitehead pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Tigers.

    1960: The Tigers and Indians become the first teams to switch managers with Jimmy Dykes going to Cleveland and Joe Gordon to Detroit.

    1973: The Braves Phil Niekro pitches a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Padres.

    1979: Willie Mays, Hack Wilson, and Warren Giles are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1983: Yankees manager Billy Martin is suspended two games for calling umpire Dale Ford a "stone liar" after 12-6 extra inning win over the White Sox on July 31st. It was his second suspension due to continued umpire abuse.

    1984: In the Blue Jays 4-3 win over the Orioles, Cliff Johnson breaks a M.L. record with his 19th pinch home run.

    1986: The Giants Steve Carlton records his 4,000th strikeout.

    1993: In the Padres 11-10 win over the Giants in 12 innings, Tony Gwynn ties Ty Cobb and Stan Musial's M.L. record with his fourth game of five hits this season.

    1999: Mark McGwire hits his 500th career home run.

    2001: Kirby Puckett, Dave Winfield, Bill Mazeroski, and Hilton Smith are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    2005: Albert Pujols becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 30 home runs in each of his five seasons.

    2006: In the Padres 6-3 win over the Nationals, Trevor Hoffman becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 30 saves for 11 straight seasons.

    2007: Tom Glavine records his 300th win.

    2010: The Rangers are sold in auction for $385 million to a group led by team president and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan.

    2013: MLB announces suspensions for 13 players involved with PEDs supplied by the Biogenesis anti-aging clinic. All but Alex Rodriguez receive 50 game suspensions. Rodriguez would get 211 games.

    1890: Cy Young makes his M.L. debut, getting the win in the Cleveland Spiders 8-1 win over the Chicago Colts. It was the first of his 511 career wins.

    1937: In a 12-6 loss to the Cubs, the Braves become the first team in N.L. history to lead off a game with back to back home runs.

    1952: At 46 years old, Satchel Paige becomes the oldest pitcher to throw a shutout, doing so for the Browns in a 1-0 win over the Tigers.

    1967: In the Orioles 4-0 win over the White Sox, Brooks Robinson sets a M.L. record by hitting into his fourth triple play.

    1972: In the Braves 4-3 win over the Reds, Hank Aaron hits career home runs 660 and 661, breaking Babe Ruth's M.L. record for homers with one team.

    1973: Roberto Clemente is inducted into the Hall of Fame. After his tragic death in a plane crash while sending earthquake relief supplies to Nicaragua, the mandatory five year waiting period is waived.

    1981: The players approve a split season format due to the strike. The Yankees, A's, Dodgers, and Phillies are declared first half champions and qualify for the divisional series.

    1983: In a 4-0 win over the Red Sox, the Royals Eric Rasmussen becomes the first in M.L. history to pitch a shutout in his debut in both leagues. In 1975 with the Cardinals, he pitched a shutout against the Padres in his M.L. debut.

    1985: For the second time, the players start a midseason strike. This work stoppage lasts two days.

    1988: the Cubs Goose Gossage joins Rollie Fingers as the only pitchers to record 300 saves.

    1999: Tony Gwynn records his 3,000th hit.

    2002: The Giants Robb Nen records his 300th save.

    2003: The Yankees trade Armando Benitez to the Mariners for Jeff Nelson.

    2006: The Mets sign David Wright to a six year extension worth $55 million.

    2010: The Braves retire Tom Glavine's #47.

    1943: In a 9-6 loss to the Phillies, the Giants tie a N.L. record by leaving 18 runners on base. They left at least one on base in each inning.

    1951: The largest crowd to ever see a minor league game, 57,000 fans at Miami's Orange Bowl, watch 51-year old Satchel Paige hit a double and record the win in the Miami Marlins 6-2 win over the Columbus Jets.

    1969: Bob Skinner resigns as Phillies manager and is replaced by third base coach George Myatt.

    1978: Red Barber and Mel Allen are the first recipients of the Ford Frick Award for broadcasting.

    1982: Jim Rice jumps into the stands at Fenway Park after a four year old fans is struck by a foul liner off the bat of Dave Stapleton. Rice picks up the boy and runs him through the dugout to a waiting ambulance, possibly saving his life.

    1985: The players and owners agree to a new five year agreement that includes salary arbitration increasing from two to three years. The agreement ends the strike after two days.

    1988: The Mariners set a new M.L. record with five sacrifice flies in a 12-7 win over the A's.

    1999: The Devil Rays Wade Boggs records his 3,000th hit, a sixth inning home run off the Indians Chris Haney. As he rounded third base, he blows a kiss skyward to honor his mother, then kisses home plate.

    2001: After singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at Wrigley Field, former Chicago Bears player Steve McMichael is ejected by home plate umpire Angel Hernandez. After a close call earlier in the game, McMichael tells the crowd he'll "have a talk" with the umpire later, then blows a kiss towards him.

    2001: The Braves Greg Maddux extends his innings streak without issuing a walk to 70.1, breaking the N.L. record.

    2002: Major League players agree to random steroid testing starting the next season.

    2004: The Cubs Greg Maddux records his 300th win.

    2007: Barry Bonds hits home run #756* off the Nationals Mike Bascik. After the home run and a 10 minute celebration at San Francisco's AT&T Park, a video message is played, showing Hank Aaron congratulating Bonds on passing his mark.

    1957: Dodgers president Walter O'Malley announces the team will move to Los Angeles the next season.

    1976: Before the first game of a doubleheader against the Royals, the White Sox come out wearing shorts. They win that game 5-2. The return to wearing pants for the nightcap, losing that game 7-1.

    1988: The first scheduled night game at Wrigley Field between the Cubs and Phillies is stopped in the third inning due to rain, making the game unofficial.

    1998: The Twins Paul Molitor records his 3,000th hit.

    2002: The Braves John Scmoltz records his 40th save of the season, marking the earliest anyone had done so.

    2004: The Blue Jays fire manager Carlos Tosca and replace him with first base coach John Gibbons on an interim basis.

    2014: In the Braves 7-6 win over the Nationals, Justin and B.J. Upton homer in the same game for the fifth time, setting the M.L. record for brothers.

    1916: The A's beat the Tigers 7-1 to end a 20 game losing streak.

    1946: For the first time in M.L. history, all scheduled games are played at night.

    1975: In the Dodgers 2-0 win over the Mets, Davey Lopes breaks the M.L. record with his 32nd straight stolen base. That mark would hold until Vince Coleman breaks it in 1989.

    1976: With his induction into Cooperstown, umpire Cal Hubbard becomes the first to be inducted into two Halls of Fame. For his time with the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.

    1981: Major League Baseball returns from the strike with a rescheduled All-Star Game, won by the N.L. 5-4 at Cleveland Stadium.

    1988: After 5,687 straight games all played at day time, Wrigley Field hosts its first official night game. The Cubs win the historic game 6-4. The first night game was scheduled the night before against the Phillies, but called off in the third inning due to rain.

    1998: In the Braves 7-5 victory over the Giants, Dennis Martinez records his 244th win, breaking Juan Marichal's mark for Latin American pitchers.

    1999: Five grand slams are hit around Major League Baseball, marking the first time for that to happen in a single day. The slams were hit by the Cardinals Fernando Tatis, the Expos Jose Vidro, the Marlins Mike Lowell, the Yankees Bernie Williams, and the Mariners Jay Buhner.

    2002: Barry Bonds hits his 600th career home run.

    2010: The Mariners fire manager Don Wakamatsu and three coaches. Daren Brown, from the team's AAA affiliate in Tacoma, is named interim manager.

    1889: The Giants Mickey Welch in a game against Indianapolis becomes the first pinch hitter in M.L. history.

    1971: Harmon Killebrew hits his 500th career home run.

    1974: Believed to be the youngest player in professional baseball history, Jorge Lebron makes his debut for the Single-A Auburn Phillies at 14 years old. He plays three games before returning to Puerto Rico to finish junior high school.

    1981: Pete Rose records his 3,631st hit, breaking Stan Musial's N.L. record.

    1989: Giants pitcher Dave Dravecky returns to baseball 15 months after cancer surgery on his arm. He allows one hit over seven innings in a 4-3 win over the Reds.

    1995: With the Dodgers trailing the Cardinals 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, fans throw souvenir baseballs on the field. It was the third time they had done so, resulting in the game being forfeited to the Cardinals. It was the first forfeit in 16 years in the majors.

    1998: In the Marlins 3-2 win over the Padres, Harry and Hunter Wendlestedt become the first father and son umpires to work a game together. Dad Harry was behind the plate with Hunter working third base.

    2001: Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau dies at age 84.

    2002: Barry Bonds is intentionally walked for the 46th time this season, breaking Willie McCovey's 1969 record.

    1950: The Braves Vern Bickford pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Dodgers.

    1951 WCBS-TV broadcasts the first game in color, a Braves 8-1 win over the Dodgers. Red Barber and Connie Desmond provide the commentary.

    1961: Warren Spahn wins his 300th game in the Braves 2-1 victory over the Cubs.

    1980: Reggie Jackson hits his 400th home run.

    1986: Pete Rose record his tenth game of five hits, setting a new N.L. record.

    1987: The A's Mark McGwire hits his 38th home run of the season, breaking the A.L. rookie record and tying the N.L. rookie mark.

    1948: In a doubleheader nightcap against the Browns, the Indians set a M.L. record with 14 different players recording a hit in a 26-3 win.

    1964: Mickey Mantle extends his own M.L. record by homering from both sides of the plate for the tenth time.

    1974: In the Angels 4-2 win over the Red Sox, Nolan Ryan records his second game of 19 strikeouts this season.

    1976: The directors of the new A.L. franchise in Toronto announce the team will be known as the Blue Jays.

    1984: Don Drysale, Pee Wee Reese, Harmon Killebrew, Rick Ferrell, and Luis Aparaicio are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1984: After Braves pitcher Pascual Perez hits leadoff hitter Alan Wiggins, the Padres pitchers target him in each of hits at bats. That sets the stage for multiple bench clearing incidents, including two big brawls late in the game.

    1987: The Tigers acquire pitcher Doyle Alexander from the Braves for pitching prospect John Smoltz.

    1988: The Red Sox defeat the Tigers 9-4 for a new M.L. record 23 straight home wins.

    1994: The longest work stoppage in the game's history, lasting 232 days, begins. The strike would cause the cancellation of the postseason and World Series.

    2001: An intentional walk to Steve Finley ordered by Braves manager Bobby Cox ends Greg Maddux's N.L. record streak of 72.1 inning pitch without a walk,

    2007: With a perfect ninth inning against the Mariners, the White Sox Bobby Jenks retires 38 straight hitters, setting a new A.L. record and tying the M.L. mark.

    2008: On what would have been his 69th birthday, the Braves hold a public tribute for popular broadcaster Skip Caray, who passed away August 3rd.

    1913: In a Virginia League doubleheader, Henry Hedgpeth pitches two complete games. He pitches a one-hitter in a 1-0 win in the opener, then a no-hitter in a 10-0 win in the nightcap.

    1948: The Phillies set a M.L. record by scoring nine runs before recording an out in a 12-7 win over the Giants.

    1916: Babe Ruth pitches the Red Sox to a 1-0 win in 13 innings over Walter Johnson and the Senators.

    1975: In both games of a doubleheader, Orioles manager Earl Weaver is ejected by umpire Ron Luciano.

    1989: In his second start since coming back from cancer surgery, Dave Dravecky breaks his arm while throwing a pitch to the Expos Tim Raines. Dravecky collapsed to the ground in pain after the humerus bone snaps midway between the shoulder and elbow with the sound of the break being heard throughout the stadium.

    1990: The Phillies Terry Mulholland pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Giants.

    1993: A Rangers 6-4 win over the Indians turns out to be the last of Nolan Ryan's 324 victories.

    1999: In the first inning of the Angels 10-2 win over the Tigers, Chuck Finley becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to strike out four batters in an inning twice in his career.

    2011: Jim Thome hits his 600th career home run.

    2012: The Mariners Felix Hernandez pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the Rays. It marked the first time in M.L. history three perfect games were pitched in a season. The White Sox Philip Humber and the Giants Matt Cain also pitched perfect games this season.

    2012: The Giants Melky Cabrera will miss the rest of the season after receiving a 50 game suspension for a positive PED test. Cabrera was the MVP of the All-Star Game.

    1920: Indians shortstop Ray Chapman suffers a fractured skull after being hit by a pitch from the Yankees Carl Mays. He would pass away early the next morning, making him the first on field fatality in M.L. history. Chapman was 29 years old.

    1948: With his wife Claire and his two daughter by his side, Babe Ruth dies of throat cancer at New York's Memorial Hospital. Ruth was 53 years old.

    1954: With the Braves Eddie Mathews featured on the cover, the first edition of Sports Illustrated hits newsstands.

    1966: Willie Mays hits his 534th career home run, tying Jimmie Foxx for the most among right handed hitters.

    1973: At league meetings in Milwaukee, a proposed interleague schedule is voted on. All A.L. clubs vote yes with all the N.L. votes cast as no.

    1996: The first M.L. game played outside the U.S. or Canada is played in Monterrey, Mexico. The Padres defeated the Mets 15-10. The series was forced to be moved due to a conflict with the Republican National Convention, which was being held in San Diego.

    2001: The Red Sox fire manager Jimy Williams and replace him with pitching coach Joe Kerrigan.

    2002: The Players Association, by a 57-0 vote, sets a strike date for August 30th.

    2005: At age 87, Bobby Bragan of the Central League's Fort Worth Cats becomes the oldest to manage in a professional baseball game. He is ejected in the third inning for arguing balls and strikes.

    2009: With three hits in the Yankees 10-3 loss to the Mariners, Derek Jeter raises his total to 2,675, passing Luis Aparaicio for the most among M.L. shortstops.

    2012: By unanimous vote, the sale of the Padres to a group led by businessman Ron Fowler is approved. Among those in the new Padres ownership group is San Diego native and PGA Tour professional Phil Mickelson.

    2013: The Phillies announce manager Charlie Manuel is replaced on an interim basis by Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.

    1903: Likely due to inclement weather, the Philles are unable to play a scheduled game for the ninth straight time.

    1917: The Reds defeat the Giants at the Polo Grounds 5-0 in the first ever M.L. game to be played on Sunday. After the game, managers John McGraw and Christy Mathewson are arrested for violating the blue laws, which disallowed playing baseball on the Sabbath.

    1921: Ty Cobb records his 3,000th hit. At 34 years old, he becomes the youngest to do so.

    1951: Standing 43 inches tall, Eddie Gaedel walks in his only plate appearance. The stunt, another Bill Veeck idea, would be outlawed afterwards.

    1957: Giants president Horace Stoneham announces he has signed a lease to move the team to San Francisco for the following season.
