Not really sure why the Giants would want a major league outfielder in exchange for relievers when they have no shot at competing this year, then again nothing the Giants have done has made sense in quite a while. I wonder if a package of Duvall, Newcomb, and maybe a throw in would be enough for 2 of the Watson/Melancon/Smith trio.
Smith is better. Melancon has pitched well this year but is probably viewed by the Giants as a salary dump. They may make taking Melancon and his contract part of the price for getting Smith or Watson.

Just take the money earmarked for Kimbrel and extent Luke
Yeah if we can afford to absorb Melancon's contract we could probably get Smith or Watson for relatively cheap. I don't think it would take anything more than a prospect in the 15-30 range plus some filler. Maybe Duvall plus a guy in the 15-30 range if they want an MLB guy.
Obviously we match up really well with them as trading partners though.
Also, I think we match up pretty well with the Marlins as well. I really like Guerrero and Nick Anderson out of the pen. I bet they would be open to trading one of them for a modest little prospect package. Anderson is striking out over two hitters per inning and has only issued two walks.
I really wish that Ian Kennedy wasn't making 16 million a year because he has looked really good out of the Royals bullpen. They have some other guys with some pretty attractive numbers, though.
There are some really good relievers on some really bad teams. It may just be a matter of waiting until they fall out of contention so we can swoop in and poach a few arms.

I seriously doubt teams would have to give up a 2020 pick if Craig is signed after this years draft.
(a) A Qualified Free Agent shall be subject to compensation only if: (i) his former Club tenders him a Qualifying Offer pursuant to paragraph (3) of this Section B; (ii) the Player declines the Qualifying Offer or signs a contract with another Major League Club prior to the expiration of the Acceptance Period; and (iii) the Player signs a Major League contract with another Major League Club that is confirmed by the Players Association and the LRD on or before the day prior to the next succeeding Major League Rule 4 Draft (“Rule 4 Draft”). A Qualified Free Agent who signs a bona fide Minor League contract shall not be subject to compensation irrespective of whether the Minor League contract is subsequently assigned to the Major League Club. No Club and Player may enter into any Major League or Minor League contract, or assign such a contract, with the intent to circumvent Article XX(B)(3) or XX(B)(4).
Bold added by me. There is NO compensation provision in the CBA for players who sign after the draft. Zip. Nada. But people who haven't bothered to look at the CBA will continue to write as if otherwise.
