Just passing along the info as a possible explanation from the D-Backs perspective.

this has probably been posted here but

    Jim Callis

    @jimcallisMLB

Touki Toussaint giveaway by @Dbacks to @Braves to dump $9.5 mil of Bronson Arroyo's salary is the most inexplicable trade I have ever seen.

The @Dbacks, who signed a $1 billion-plus TV deal in February, just sold their #3 prospect for a few million bucks.

Sure but minus Hamels, who Amaro wants the moon for, not really much out there.

I guess Cueto but hes a FA to be, and would be a rental.

I'm far from convinced there is such a thing as a "pitching surplus", but I nonetheless agree that—given his cost—Arroyo is probably not worth keeping around to add to the rotational depth in 2016.

Arizona actually matches up pretty well with Philadelphia or Cincinnati for either of those guys to be honest, but I'd still consider them a darkhorse. They've still got Braden Shipley and Aaron Blair, picked up Gabriel Guerrero in the Trumbo deal, Peter O'Brien as an offensive-minded Catcher in the Gattis mold, and Brandon Drury blocked.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

I'll be interested if they trade Hamels, they have choice to given where they are as a franchise.

And if Amaro will settle for anything less than the moon.

Well Hamels was actually the name was mentioned in that forum, but I'msure it was just speculation.

Also, never know who could be available. Could go after Chris Sale as well.

Well, then let's break some of these dudes in in the ML bullpen, like the Cardinals do (Wainwright as closer).

I wouldn't do it with Banuelos because his innings need to be severely monitored.

I suppose you could say $4.5m is spent already, a sunk cost. Would you rather spend the next eight on Arroyo or somewhere else?

Depends on how hes looking in August.

You can find negatives in almost anything, but this is about as positive of a deal as it gets. Hart did an amazing job

For some comparison on the money, Moncada has pretty comparable value to Toussaint right now; maybe slightly more value, but not much. And the Red Sox just spent $70 million to get him.

This is an unbelievable steal. Anyone upset about this deal, or pretending it was made to get Arroyo, is only proving they are incapable of making an unbiased evaluation.

Toussaint showed off his immense talent on Friday with a sparkling effort. He tossed 6 shutout innings on one hit and one walk with 5 strikeouts in Kane County's 4-1 win, and only needed 73 pitches to do it. This one could be special down the road.

Trying to get some context about this whole thing ... The D-Backs were shocked and elated TOussant fell to them because of the belief he was a tough signing. He was committed to Vanderbilt, and the $2.7 mil was well above slot. Even so, supposedly his mom checked out the city and the franchise before agreeing to let her baby boy sign.

But La Russa hates high school pitching, and the D-Banks did not take h.s. pitcher until 14th round this year after Towers' people picked four very high last year. Much of this year's early draft for Arizona was spent on college pitching, bumping TOussant down the prospect board.

    Amazing deal. An absolute steal.

I would love to have a hitting prospect or two, though.

I still have to think they trade some of this pitching for a hitter next winter or eventually before 2017.

That's just terrible logic from them, though. Those college pitchers are only ahead of Toussaint in age; every single one of them has less talent and potential than Toussaint.

I agree with you that that's what they're thinking, and we sure benefited, but man, would I hate to be a D-Backs fan right now.

That would be like us trading Allard because we also drafted Minter, who is 'ahead of him on the prospect board'.

I wasn't thrilled with the selection of Hart as GM but have been reconsidering that lately. Icing on the cake, I am on board.

There it is. Now I understand.

Should have known The Man Who Invented Baseball had a hand in this. It's got his fingerprints all over it. And poor Stew has to do the interviews and explain a decision that makes no sense to anyone. Except Tony LaRussa.

I can understand that being a team philosophy, but once the guy's in house maybe you want to ignore the fact that he's 19. Or get more than Phil Gosselin for him. Wow.

I don't see how anyone can complain about this deal. We got a 19 year-old high prospect arm for $10M and a utility guy. We also got Arroyo, who could surprise us by coming back and being productive for a couple of months. If he is decent, we could pick up his 2016 option. If not, buy out the option and move on. It's a huge win for JH and the Braves.

Not many teams in baseball have as many top hitting prospects as the Braves do.
