Except that we don't elect them and 'trust' them to do 'what's right' by any stretch of the imagination: they run on platforms of ideals, promises, and legislation, and then are expected to execute them.
If they don't they can be recalled, impeached, voted out of office. The only difference between a direct democracy and our Republic is that we aren't the one casting the votes in legislative bodies, IMO.
Independents are liberal republicans or conservative democrats who're the reason Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Reagan have been our last 5 presidents. I wish I was joking, but that's where the "independents" fall. It's much more rare to have independents like myself who don't stick to one party and vote in smaller doses. I've voted for someone in pretty much any political party if their positions most closely align with mine. Republican, Democrat, Green, Libertarian, etc. Though I more commonly vote Green or Libertarian.
Stockholm, more densely populated than NYC - sturg
Then they might as well carry the card then.
I rather spit and burn any Republican or Democrat card giving to me.
People asked which devil you want to support.
I turn the question around, "why should I support them?"
Silence.
Then here it comes, "well you have to select one or the other"
And then I say why?
They come back with "because no one else has a chance!"
They are right but I will be damned if I have to vote for these clowns. I give the protest vote of neither.
People fail to realize if someone doesn't want to do business with go someplace that will. Such a simple concept.
Save the "whites only" diatribe, it wouldn't make me mad, I would just go somewhere else. You really don't need to see a sign when a business doesn't want you or your kind in their establishment.
Sturg, let me see if I understand your position here.
Businesses' right to discriminate is an essential precept of the free market.
People involved in issue advocacy within the marketplace are bullies and thugs.
Am I close?

I just find it amusing that you accuse the 'religious' of 'ruining' people, and then drop your own little morsel of bigotry right on top. When will the republicans stop letting the religious right ruin them? It seems to me like they're resulting in way more shady behavior to hide being gay than out politicians. I don't think you'd find Barney Frank on Grindr or trying to have anonymous sex in a truck stop.
