Atl was the closest NL team to me growing up. I don't like American League Baseball.

How does being close to the team have any relevance to your fandom? Do they represent the city?

BC I go to a lot of games. What use is rooting for a team 4000 miles away just bc they are good? I don't have respect for people that just root for random winners.

But do you consider it a representation of the city?

What about people who root for a team in their city but don't like going to games live? Are they not fans?

So are you a Nats fan, giles?

Since you can only root for teams who live near you.

I explained my fandom. I have ties with every team I root for. You root for Tar Hells, Broncos, Thunder.......lol. Ever been to Oklahoma City? Have a Grandfather that drove thru there 40 years ago?

I just don't understand why your proximity to the home stadium is a more valid reason to root for you team than any other reason.

You don't understand how stupid it is to just root for the best team, no matter where they are located? And you guys are over 12 years old, not kids.

So if someone liked the Cowboys, Lakers, Yankees, and Kentucky but had ties to them, that would be ok?

It sounds pretty stupid to me to like a team because they play close to you or because mommy or daddy liked them. I don't see how one reason is more valid than another. Once you stick with your team they are your team.

Ties to texas, LA, NY, and Kentucky? LOL.

Rooting for a team other than your father (if your father was around) seems like a character flaw.

So this discussion seals the deal for any qualms anyone had previously about gf being a Washington Nationals fan.

Because he lives close to them, he roots for them. Since the Braves are too far away now, and the Nationals are closer, it makes perfect sense now.

Hey anyone from New York/NJ area, do you root for the Jets or Giants? Since they play in the same stadium, it's not a matter of who's closer in the vicinity, it's a matter of do you prefer the AFC style of play or NFC style of play.

I think its wierd for someone to be able to root for a different team as the primary team. I could see following another team but to completely change alleigances. Thats wierd.

Typically its Jets, Isles, Nets, Devils......Giants, Mets, Rangers, Knicks. The selected fan bases are similar in the type of person that is a fan of those groups of teams.

Then you have BRULe-----he's a fan of Knicks, Bucs, Braves.......LOL!

LOL at giles' false sense of fandom.
People root for different teams for different reasons. There is no guide or any rules. If someone starts really getting in to baseball at the age of 16, sees Mike Trout play and loves him and becomes an Angels fan, who the hell cares? If they follow closely, root for them, watch them - does that make them any less a fan than someone who lives in LA? Give me a break.

My dad was a Braves, Cowboys, Devils fan. Was he a front-runner? I guess so. I grew up rooting for those teams because my dad did and I watched them on TV. Am I front-runner for liking the Cowboys? Well, I was 5 when they last won a SB - don't remember it at all. When I started to really get in to football and the cowboys, they freakin sucked. I remember the 5-11 seasons under Campo, the Drew Hensons, Quincy Carters, Chad Hutchinsons, etc. I remained a Cowboys and Braves fan. I fell out of hockey when they had a lockout, but I watched and loved the Devils winning 2 Cups in my time as a fan. I got back on board with hockey a few years ago, and loved Giroux and thus became a Flyers fan (after they lost in the cup to the hawks in 2010).

If someone has passion and follows a team, they are a fan. I'm a bigger Braves fan than some of my friends are Phillies fans who live in Philly.
