July 1st:

1910: The White Sox open their new stadium, later known as Comiskey Park, with a 2-0 loss to the Browns.

1916: At 42 years old, Honus Wagner becomes the oldest player in M.L. history to hit an inside-the-park home run. He does it in the fourth inning against the Reds.

1920: The Senators Walter Johnson pitches his first no-hitter against the Red Sox. The next day, he comes up with a sore arm for the first time in his career. He would go 8-10 the rest of the season.

1945: In his first game back after serving in the war for four years, the Tigers Hank Greenberg homers in a 9-5 in over the A's.

1948: The Dodgers Roy Campanella makes his M.L. debut, hitting a double in his first at bat and also hitting two singles in a 6-4 loss to the Giants.

1951: The Indians Bob Feller ties the record held by Cy Young and Larry Corcoran by pitching his third no-hitter in a 2-1 win over the Tigers.

1954: The Cardinals Joe Cunningham homers twice against the Braves, giving him a record three in his first two days in the majors. He had nine RBIs in his first seven at bats.

1968: A wild pitch from the Cardinals Bob Gibson allows a run to score in the first inning against the Dodgers, ending his streak of 47 2/3 scoreless innings. The Cardinals would win 8-1 and Gibson would pitch 23 innings before allowing another run.

1983: Arbitrator Raymond Goetz rules that the 43 players who were on the D.L. during the '81 strike are not entitled to their salaries for that period, saving the owners $2.5 million.

1984: Paul Splittorff, who was the Royals winningest pitcher with 166 wins, retires after 13 seasons.

July 2nd:

1903: Cubs pitcher Jack Doscher makes his M.L. debut, making him the first son of a former major league player to make it to the big leagues. His father, Herm, was a third baseman for Troy, Chicago, and Cleveland.

1941: Joe DiMaggio extends his hitting streak to 45 games, breaking Willie Keeler's all-time record.

1950: The Indians Bob Feller wins his 200th game, leading the Indians to a 5-3 win in the second of a doubleheader against the Tigers.

1951: Bill Veeck gets the necessary 75% of outstanding stock on the last day of his option to purchase the St. Louis Browns from Bill and Charlie DeWitt.

1963: The Giants Willie Mays hits a homer off the Braves Warren Spahn in the 16th inning to give San Francisco a 1-0 win. The homer hit at 12:31 AM and the game was the longest in N.L history to end with a home run.

1986: Roger Clemens and the Red Sox lose at Toronto 4-2, making it his first loss after 14 wins. Clemens fell one short of the A.L. record for wins to start a season.

1987: The Royals Jim Eisenreich, making a comeback after being forced out of baseball in 1984 because of a nervous disorder, hits his first home run since 1982 in a 10-3 win over his former team, the Twins.

July 3rd:

1912: The Giants Rube Marquard beats the Dodgers 2-1 for his 19th straight win of the season. His last two wins in 1911 give him 21 straight wins. Both are records.

1950: Joe DiMaggio is asked to play first base with rookie Joe Collins not hitting and Tommy Henrich injured. He handles 13 chances cleanly in a 7-2 loss.

1965: Phillies teammates Frank Thomas and Dick Allen engage in horseplay that turns serious when Thomas swings a bat at Allen. Thomas hits a game-tying pinch-homer in the eighth, but the Reds win 10-8. Thomas is released after the game and later signs with Houston.

1966: Braves pitcher Tony Cloninger becomes the first player in N.L. history to hit two grand slams in a 17-3 win over the Giants. His nine RBIs are a record for pitchers.

1968: In the Indians 1-0, ten inning win over the Twins, Luis Tiant strikes out 19 batters. He sets modern M.L. records for strikeouts in a ten inning game and also with 32 strikeouts in consecutive games. He also tied the modern record with 41 strikeouts in three straight games.

1970: Following his induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame from his days at Carson-Newman College, the Angels Clyde Wright pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the A's.

1974: Pitching in his record 13th straight game, the Dodgers Mike Marshall saves Tommy John's win in a 4-1 win over the Reds in the first of a doubleheader.

1983: The Rangers score 12 runs in the 15th inning of a 16-4 win over the A's. That sets a M.L. record for runs in an inning.

1988: The A's Gene Nelson steals a base while running for Don Baylor in a 9-8, 16 inning in over the Blue Jays. He becomes the first A.L. pitcher to steal a base since Blue Moon Odom in 1973.

1993: Hall of Fame pitcher Don Drysdale dies at age 56.

July 4th:

1905: In the afternoon game of a doubleheader, the A's and Rube Waddell defeats the Red Sox and Cy Young 4-2 in 25 innings. A's catcher Ossee Schreckengost sets a M.L. record by working 28 innings in one day.

1911: Ty Cobb's 40-game hitting streak ends in a 7-3 Tigers loss to the White Sox. Since the streak started on May 15th, Cobb hit .491.

1939: In front of 61,808 fans, the Yankees retire Lou Gehrig's #4, making it the first uniform number retired in M.L. history. Gehrig tells the Yankee Stadium crowd "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth".

1960: In a 9-8 loss to the Senators, Mickey Mantle becomes the 18th player in M.L. history to hit 300 home runs.

1980: Nolan Ryan strikes out Reds outfielder Cesar Geronimo to become the fourth pitcher in M.L. history to reach 3,000 strikeouts in an 8-1 loss. Geronimo was also Bob Gibson's 3,000th strikeout.

1983: The Yankees Dave Righetti pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Red Sox. It was the Yankees first no-hitter since Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series.

1984: The Yankees Phil Niekro becomes the ninth pitcher in M.L. to reach 3,000 strikeouts.

1985: In an absolutely crazy game, the Mets defeat the Braves 16-13 in 19 innings. The game was delayed twice by rain and the playing time was six hours and ten minutes. The Mets Keith Hernandez hit for the cycle. The Braves tied the game in the 18th inning when relief pitcher Rick Camp, a career .060 hitter, homered. No pitcher has ever hit a home run that late in a game. The game ended at 3:55 AM, the latest finish in M.L. history. The postgame fireworks show began at 4:01, making some Atlanta residents think the city is under attack.

1987: The Padres trade pitcher Dave Dravecky and Craig Lefferts along with outfielder Kevin Mitchell to the Giants for third baseman Chris Brown and pitchers Keith Comstock, Mark Davis, and Mark Grant. In 1989, Mitchell would win the MVP with the Giants and Davis will win the Cy Young with the Padres.

1988: Dan Quisenberry, whose 238 saves are the fourth most in M.L. history, is released by the Royals. The next week, he signs with the Cardinals.

July 5th:

1935: The Dodgers Tony Cuccinello and the Giants Al Cuccinello become the first brothers in M.L. history to hit home runs in the same game.

1947: The Indians Larry Doby becomes the first black player in American League history, appearing as a pinch-hitter against the White Sox.

1951: Hall of Fame pitcher Rich "Goose" Gossage is born in Colorado Springs, CO.

1987: The A's Mark McGwire becomes the first rookie to hit 30 home runs before the All-Star Break.

1989: The Pirates Barry Bonds homers in a 6-4 loss to the Giants. He and Bobby Bonds with 408, now have the most homers of any father/son duo in M.L. history.

1991: The National League unanimously approve the Colorado Rockies and Florida Marlins entry as expansion teams for the 1993 season.

1993: The A's Rickey Henderson becomes the first player in 60 years to open both games of a doubleheader with a home run.

1998: Roger Clemens becomes the 11th pitcher in M.L. history to record 3,000 strikeouts.

1998: Juan Gonzalez becomes the second player in M.L. history to reach 100 RBIs before the All-Star break.

2000: In a 12-9 win over the Astros, the Diamondbacks Luis Gonzalez becomes the first player in team history to hit for the cycle.

2002: Hall of Famer Ted Williams dies at age 83.

July 6th:

1932: Cubs shortstop Billy Jurges is shot in his Chicago hotel room by girlfriend Violet Popovich Valli. Jurges was shot in the shoulder and hand in a scuffle for the gun. Jurges does not prosecute and Valli would sign a 22-week contract to sing at local nightclubs.

1933: The American League wins the first All-Star Game 4-2 at Chicago's Comiskey Park. Babe Ruth's two-run homer is the difference in the game.

1942: First inning homers by Lou Boudreau and Rudy York lead the A.L. to a 3-1 win in the All Star Game.

1956: Ford Frick introduces the Cy Young Award, given to the top pitcher as voted by the baseball writers. The honor is given to one pitcher until 1967, when a winner would come from both leagues.

1980: In an 8-3 win over the Cardinals, the Phillies Steve Carlton passes Mickey Lolich's mark of 2,832 to set the strikeout record for left-handed pitchers.

1983: The A.L. routs the N.L. 13-3 in the 50th Anniversary of the All-Star Game at Comiskey Park. It was the A.L.'s first win since 1971. Fred Lynn hit the first grand slam in ASG history and tied Ted Williams' record with his fourth All-Star home run.

1986: In an 11-8 loss to the Expos, the Braves Bob Horner becomes the 11th player in M.L. history to hit four home runs in a game. He's the first to do so in a losing effort.

1989: Even thought he retired May 29th, the Phillies Mike Schmidt is elected as the N.L. starting third baseman for the All-Star Game. Jose Canseco, who had not played all season because of a wrist injury, is voted to start for the A.L. Neither would play.

July 7th:

1900: Two months before his 31st birthday, Kid Nichols records his 300th win, the youngest to do so.

1906: Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige is born in Mobile, Alabama.

1936: After losing the first three All-Star Games, the National League gets its first win, beating the A.L. 4-3 at Fenway Park.

1937: President Franklin D. Roosevelt is attendance as the A.L wins the All-Star Game in Washington 8-3. During the game, A drive off Earl Averill's bat fractures Dizzy Dean's toe. Unable to pitch with his same delivery, Dean starts using an unnatural motion, which causes an arm injury that he would never recover from.

1942: A military All-Star team that includes Bob Feller, Cecil Travis, Sam Chapman, Benny McCoy, Johnny Sturm, and Frankie Pytlak loses to the A.L. stars 5-0 in front of more than 60,000 fans in Cleveland. From the game, $160,000 goes to military relief.

1948: The Indians sign 42-year old Negro League star Satchel Paige. He would finish the season 6-1.

1958: William Shea outlines a plan for a $12 million dollar stadium in Flushing Meadows at the N.L. meetings.

1959: Willie Mays drives in Hank Aaron with the winning run as the N.L. defeats the A.L. 5-4 in the All-Star Game at Forbes Field.

1964: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game at Shea Stadium 7-4, tying the A.L. with 17 wins apiece.

1993: During a 4-3 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, Reds pitcher Tom Browning leaves the stadium to watch the game from the roof of a three story building across Sheffield Avenue. He is fined $500.

July 8th:

1902: After being accused by Ban Johnson of trying to wreck the Baltimore and Washington clubs, John McGraw negotiates his release from the Orioles, and signs a deal to manage the Giants. McGraw then swings the sale of the Orioles to the Giants and Reds.

1935: The A.L. wins the All Star Game 4-1 in Cleveland. Jimmie Foxx homered and had three RBIs.

1941: Ted Williams hits a three run homer in the bottom of the ninth off the Cubs Claude Passeau to give the A.L. a 7-5 win in the All-Star Game.

1947: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 2-1 at Wrigley Field. Schoolboy Rowe, who played in the 1936 game for the A.L., pinch-hits for Johnny Sain, becoming the first to play for both leagues in the ASG.

1951: The feud between Joe DiMaggio and Casey Stengal comes to ahead. After a misplay in the first by DiMaggio, Stengal sends reserve Jackie Jensen to replace him after Joe had already taken his position.

1952: The N.L. wins a rain-shortened after five innings All-Star Game 3-2 in Philadelphia. Hank Sauer's two-run home run proves to be the game-winner.

1957: Ford Frick is elected by the owners to a new seven year deal as commissioner when his present deal expires in 1958.

1976: In a 6-3 victory over the Cubs, the Padres Randy Jones wins his 16th game, setting a N.L. record for wins at the All-Star break. In the second half, Jones would lose seven games by one run, including two by 1-0 scores.

1980: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game for the ninth straight year, defeating the A.L. 4-2 at Dodger Stadium.

1982: In a 6-3 Yankees win over the A's, Billy Martin wins his 1,000th game as manager.

1997: In front of his home crowd at Jacobs Field, the Indians Sandy Alomar Jr. hits a two run-homer to help the A.L. win the All-Star Game 3-1, breaking the N.L's three year winning streak.

July 9th:

1946: Ted Williams homers twice, singles twice, walks once, scores four runs, and drove in four to help the A.L. win the All-Star Game at Fenway Park 12-0.

1957: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-5 at St. Louis' Sportsman's Park.

1962: In a meeting held in conjunction with the All-Star Game, the players ask for a reduced 1963 schedule. The do vote unanimously to continue playing two all-star games.

1963: In the N.L.'s 5-3 All-Star Game win, Willie Mays singles, walks, scores twice, drove in two, and made a great catch in the field. It also marked Stan Musial's record 24th ASG appearance.

1965: In a doubleheader split against the Red Sox, the Senators Frank Howard sets a record with seven strikeouts.

1968: Willie Mays scores an unearned run in the first inning of the All-Star Game. It turns out to be the only run as the N.L. wins 1-0. It was the first ASG to be decided by a 1-0 score.

1976: The Astros Larry Dierker pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Expos.

1986: In a 7-3 win over the Phillies, the Braves Dale Murphy doesn't play, ending his consecutive games played streak at 740. He hadn't missed a game sine September 1981.

1988: In a 21-2 win over the Cardinals, the Giants Chris Speier hits for the cycle and Ernest Riles hits the 10,000th home run in franchise history. The 21 runs scored marked a Giants record.

1988: In a 6-3 win over the Mets, Nolan Ryan gets his 100th victory as a member of the Astros, making him the seventh pitcher in M.L. history with 100 wins for two different teams. With the Angels in the 1970's, he won 138 games.

1991: Cal Ripken Jr. earns MVP honors as the A.L. wins the All-Star Game 4-2 at the SkyDome. Ripken hit a three-run homer off Dennis Martinez.

1996: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-0 at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium. The TV ratings were the worst since Nielson began tracking that for the ASG in 1967.

1997: After losing eight straight games, the Royals fire manager Bob Boone and replace him with Tony Muser. They would lose another four in a row before finally ending the streak.

July 10th:

1920: Tris Speaker's record streak of 11 straight hits ends. That would be broken Pinky Higgins in 1938.

1934: In the second All-Star Game, the Giants Carl Hubbell strikes out five future Hall of Famers in a row. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jimmie Foxx strike out in the first while Al Simmons and Joe Cronin do so in the second. Hubbell leaves the game with the N.L. leading 4-0, but the A.L. rallies for a 9-7 victory.

1936: In a ten inning, 9-6 win over the Pirates, the Phillies Chuck Klein hits four home runs in five at bats.

1945: World War II travel restrictions cancel the All-Star Game at Fenway Park.

1951: The N.L. hits four home runs in an 8-3 win in the Al-Star Game at Detroit's Briggs Stadium.

1954: Hall of Famer Andre Dawson is born in Miami, Florida.

1956: Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, and Stan Musial all hit home runs as the N.L. wins the All-Star Game 7-3.

1962: In the first of two All-Star Game in Washington, Roberto Clemente collects three hits as the N.L. wins 3-1.

1964: In the Giants 10-3 win over the Cubs, Jesus Alou collects six hits against six different pitchers.

1968: The N.L. announces divisional alignment for the 1969 season. The Eastern Division will have the Pirates, Phillies, Cubs, Mets, Cardinals, and Expos. In the West, the Braves, Reds, Dodgers, Giants, Padres, and Astros.

1982: The Rangers Larry Parrish ties Jim Northup's 1968 record by hitting his third grand slam in a week in a 6-5 win over the Tigers.

1984: On the 50th anniversary of Carl Hubbell striking out five straight Hall of Famers, N.L. pitchers Dwight Gooden and Fernando Valenzuela set an ASG record by striking out six straight hitters in a 3-1 win over the A.L. Valenzuela struck out Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, and George Brett in the fourth inning. Gooden, who was the youngest ever All-Star at 19 years old, struck out Lance Parrish, Chet Lemon, and Alvin Davis in the fifth.

1997: In front of 51,901 fans at Yankee Stadium, Japanese-born pitcher Hideki Irabu makes his debut with the Yankees. He strikes out nine in 6 2/3 innings to help the Yankees beat the Tigers 10-3.

July 11th:

1914: Babe Ruth makes his debut with the Red Sox. He pitches Boston to a 4-3 win over the Indians. He struck out in his first at bat.

1939: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-1 at Yankee Stadium.

1944: In a 7-1 N.L win, the Cubs Phil Cavaretta sets an All-Star Game record by reaching base five straight times. He does it on a triple, single, and three walks.

1950: At the All-Star Game in Chicago, Ted Williams fractures his left elbow while making a leaping off the wall catch of a Ralph Kiner line drive. He would stay in the game and hit an RBI single to give the A.L. a 3-2 lead. Ralph Kiner's homer tied the game in the ninth and the Cardinals Red Schoendienst won it with a homer of his own in the 14th inning.

1960: In the first of two All-Star games in Kansas City, homers bu Ernie Banks and Del Crandall helps the N.L. win 5-4.

1961: During the first All-Star Game at Candlestick Park, Stu Miller gets blown off the mound during the ninth inning. The resulting balk helped the A.L. tie the game, but the N.L. would win 5-4 in ten innings.

1962: In an 8-6 win over the Cardinals, Hank and Tommie Aaron hit home runs in the ninth inning for the Braves. They were the first brothers to homer in the same inning since 1938, when the Waners did the same.

1968: Earl Weaver replaces Hank Bauer as the Orioles manager.

1976: The Braves host a promotion at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium called "Headlocks and Wedlocks". Before the game, 34 couples were married. Championship wrestling followed. In between, the Braves beat the Mets 9-8.

1978: Steve Garvey singles and triples to earn MVP honors as the N.L. wins the All-Star Game in San Diego 7-3. Vida Blue started the game for the N.L., making him the first to be the starting pitcher for both leagues in ASG history. He started for the A.L. in 1971 and 1975.

1985: In the sixth inning of the Astros 4-3 win over the Mets, Nolan Ryan strikes out Danny Heep to become the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 4,000 strikeouts.

1987: Billy Ripken joins brother Cal in the starting lineup as the Orioles lose to the Twins 2-1. Cal Ripken Sr. becomes the first in M.L. history to manage two sons.

1989: Bo Jackson and Wade Boggs hit home runs in the first inning off Rick Reuschel to help the A.L. win the All-Star Game in Anaheim 5-3. Jackson would earn MVP honors.

July 12th:

1901: The Red Sox Cy Young records his 300th win in a 5-3 victory over the A's.

1945: The Braves Tommy Holmes sees his N.L. record hitting streak end at 37 games. Pete Rose broke that record in 1978.

1949: The Indians Larry Doby along with the Dodgers Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, and Don Newcombe become the first black players to appear in the All-Star Game. At Ebbets Field, the N.L. committed five errors and the A.L. won 11-7.

1951: The Yankees Allie Reynolds pitches a no-hitter to defeat the Indians and Bob Feller 1-0. Gene Woodling's homer supplied the only run of the game.

1955: Stan Musial's 12th inning homer give the N.L. a 6-5 win in the All-Star Game at Milwaukee's County Stadium.

1979: The White Sox host the infamous Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park. After the first of a doubleheader, thousands of fans storm the field, forcing the White Sox to forfeit the second game.

1990: The White Sox Melido Perez pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Yankees. It was the seventh no-hitter of the season, tying the record.

1994: Moises Alou's RBI double scoring Tony Gwynn in the tenth inning gives the N.L. an 8-7 win in the All-Star Game at Pittsburgh, breaking a six year losing streak. The Braves Fred McGriff tied the game with a two run homer in the ninth and won MVP honors.

1997: The Pirates Francisco Cordova and Ricardo Rincon combine for a ten inning no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Astros. Cordova pitched the first nine innings and left with the game scoreless. Rincon pitched the tenth, then Mark Smith won the game with a three run homer in the bottom half.

July 13th:

1934: In a 4-2 win over the Tigers, Babe Ruth hits his 700th career home run. Also, Lou Gehrig leaves the game after the first with a severe case of lumbago, making it the most serious threat to his consecutive games played streak. The next day, he returned for one at bat.

1943: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game at Philadelphia's Shibe Park 5-3. It was the first night game in All-Star history.

1954: In the A.L's 11-9 win in the All-Star Game at Cleveland, Dean Stone did not retire a single batter, but got the credit for the win. After Stone came into the game, Red Schoendiest tried to steal home in the 8th, but was thrown out by Stone.

1963: At age 43, the Indians Early Wynn records the last of his 300 wins in a 7-4 win over the A's.

1965: With a 6-5 win at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, Minnesota, the N.L took the lead over the A.L. for the first time in All-Star Game play.

1971: In the All-Star game at Detroit, both teams hit three home runs apiece, highlighted by Reggie Jackson's blast off the power generator on the right field roof. The A.L. won the game 6-4.

1982: At Montreal's Olympic Stadium, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game for the eleventh straight year, beating the A.L. 4-1.

1993: The Twins Kirby Puckett homered and doubled to help the A.L. win the All-Star Game at Baltimore 9-3.

1999: At Fenway Park, the Red Sox Pedro Martinez becomes the first pitcher in All-Star Game history to strike out the first four hitters he faced. In the first inning, he struck out Barry Larkin, Larry Walker, and Sammy Sosa and then Mark McGwire to start the second. The A.L. won the game 4-1.

July 14th:

1916: In a game that ended in a scoreless tie against the Red Sox, the Browns Ernie Koob pitched the distance. The Red Sox Carl Mays pitched the first 15 innings before Dutch Leonard finished.

1956: The Red Sox Mel Parnell pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the White Sox.

1967: The Astros Eddie Mathews hits his 500th career home run in an 8-6 win over the Giants. He hit it off Juan Marichal.

1968: The Braves Hank Aaron hits his 500th home run in a 4-2 win over the Giants.

1968: In a 6-1 win of a doubleheader nightcap over the Reds, the Astros Don Wilson strikes out 18 batters.

1970: In the 12th inning, Pete Rose bowls over the Indians Ray Fosse to score the winning run in the N.L.'s 5-4, 12 inning win at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium. Jim Hickman got the hit that scored Rose.

1972: Bill Haller was the home plate umpire while his brother Tom was catching for the Tigers. First time that had happened in M.L. history.

1995: The Dodgers Ramon Martinez pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Marlins.

July 15th:

1901: The Giants Christy Mathewson pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Cardinals. It was the first of two he would pitch in his career.

1969: The Reds Lee May hits four homers in a doubleheader split against the Braves, hitting two home runs and five RBIs in both games. The Braves won the first game 9-8 with the Reds taking the second 10-4.

1973: The Angels Nolan Ryan struck out seventeen while pitching a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Tigers. It was his second no-hitter of the season.

1980: In a 12-7 win over the Expos, the Reds Johnny Bench hits his 314th home run of his career, breaking Yogi Berra's record for catchers.
