KEMvP = .337/.367/.651
bWAR = 0.8
Let's say he has an OPS around .900 at the break... does he have trade value?
expecting a yuge game from Phillips
Look at what similar "no defense" hitters signed for this offseason. No team wanted a Kemp-ish player for anything even remotely close to his contract.
Best case scenario is KEMvP is still mashing and the Braves are able to give him away for nothing without eating any money.
Problem is, The Genius sees him as part of The Core, so if he's mashing...he's staying. If he isn't mashing...they won't be able to unload him. KEMvP and Markakis aren't going anywhere.
IIRC, the Yankees were able to move Beltran to the Rangers last deadline for some solid pieces and he was basically the same hitter as Kemp.
I agree our absolute best case scenario is for some team to swoop in and pick up the majority of that contract, but if we traded essentially the portion of his contract that the Braves added last year (3 years 24 million) to a team and ate the rest of the money then I think we could get back an okay piece. At the very least his trade value has gone up since we acquired him, IMO.
The wRC of each player in the season preceding the free agent contract received:
Encarnacion: 132 wRC - 3 years 60 million
Nelson Cruz: 137 wRC - 4 years 58 million
Mark Trumbo: 123 wRC - 3 years 37.5 million
Kemp has a 132 wRC as a Brave, which is roughly in line with his career 124 wRC.
If we are using that as a barometer, then I think his true value is somewhere between what Trumbo and Encarncion signed for.
Out of the first inning 0-0 🎉🎉🎉

TIL there's a Braves game on right now.

When are we going to be done with the Garcia experiment.
That 3-run homer against St. Louis the other night must have bought him a few weeks.
