Don't sorry, we will rehash who ends up being right about Newk.
Well you said I was wrong on Newk. I've only made 2 definitive statements about Newk

    1. He'll be a consitent 3-4 WAR
    2. He's improved a lot in only his 2nd year (first full year)

Since no one can be right about No. 1 at this time, I assumed you were talking about No. 2. Also, your line of "When you don't understand why the "improvement" was happening".... seemed to me that you were crediting his entire improved performance to luck.

    Langston Hughes to Taylor Swift.

honestly though, you have to admit she is adorable in this song.

"Alone in life and mean" cracks me up.

You, with your words like knives
And swords and weapons that you use against me
You, have knocked me off my feet again,
Got me feeling like a nothing
You, with your voice like nails
On a chalk board, calling me out when I'm wounded
You, picking on the weaker man
    You can take me down
    With just one single blow
But you don't know what you don't know

Someday I'll be living in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?

    You, with your switching sides
And your wildfire lies and your humiliation
You have pointed out my flaws again
As if I don't already see them
I walk with my head down,
Try to block you out 'cause I never impress you
I just want to feel okay again
I bet you got pushed around
Somebody made you cold but the cycle ends right now
'Cause you can't lead me down that road
And you don't know what you don't know

Someday I'll be living in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?

And I can see you years from now in a bar
    Talking over a football game
With that same big loud opinion
But nobody's listening, washed up and ranting
About the same old bitter things
Drunk and grumbling on about how I can't sing
But all you are is mean
All you are is mean and a liar and pathetic
And alone in life and mean, and mean, and mean, and mean

But someday I'll be living in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Yeah someday I'll be big enough
    So you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so (mean)
Someday I'll be living in a big old city
(Why you gotta be so mean)
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
(Why you gotta be so mean)
Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
(Why you gotta be so mean)
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?

I will say Scheff...the only reason you “may” not be right is because Newk started pitching so late. Couple that with him pitching in the cold and starting so late...he could really just now be clicking.

He could also just be what he be lol.

I would give it a 50-50 chance either way.

The thing that bothers me about him the most? He seems to have his worst games in the biggest games. If that’s the case...go ahead and trade him now. That sweat from the Yankees game was not just heat. That was a nervous sweat if I’ve ever seen one.

Per rosenthal, we are unlikely to deal any of our top prospects. Meaning we are unlikely to make a splash at the deadline.

That is unfortunate considering we are contending now. But I think like most have stated we are a year ahead of schedule, don’t have the budget and also we didn’t sign our 1st round pick. That combined with the International sanctions means a dry system if we make a big move.

We can make a splash without dealing our top prospects. Liriano, Eovaldi, Odorizzi, Shields, Solarte, Cabrera, Moose, or pretty much any LH middle reliever or high leverage reliever on an expiring deal. None of those should cost a top 10 prospect or likely even a top 15 prospect.

I agree. But for the right player I'm willing to deal some of our better prospects. Depends on if they are a rental or not. I think we have a chance to make some deals for players who can help us this year and the next couple of years.

    Enscheff,

I do have a question for you that I find rather interesting. Has your take on Camargo changed at all? I saw one of your “pals” signature had a quote from you a year ago this week. Just curious if your mindset has changed as the player has.

Only item I would surrender a top twenty prospect for would be a controllable relief pitcher with some upside. Mychal Givens comes to mind, but there may be others out there as well.

We may need another outfielder for 2019 depending on what they decide on Markakis, so a controllable asset there may also be helpful, but I don't know if anyone like that exists for a price I would be comfortable paying.

Are we really contending? Yes, I know we are in first place and yes I know anything can happen in the playoffs. Outside of that...we could make two nice moves and not be close to considered a favorite to win.

NL is very weak this year. Braves could easily make a run in the playoffs.

I still don't trust our offense over the long term, but given the price tag on Machado (and seeing that Moustakas probably isn't that big an upgrade over Camargo), I don't know where we could go to fix that issue. It would be nice to find a solid 4th OF to give Markakis a little rest and contribute off the bench, but I don't see that much out there. Maybe Merrifield? I was thinking about Wil Myers, but I didn't realize he has one giant albatross of a contract.

Sure. I am talking about actually contending...not making it to the WS and getting swept....that’s IF we can get there.

The Phils, Nats, Yankees and Astros have two to three pitchers that are considered an ace. We have...ahem....maybe Folty.

The trade I see that actually puts us in discussion would be a trade for DeGrom. That’s it. We need a ace and it would cripple us to pull it off.

Maybe Gohara and Soroka get healthy, Touki progresses. Newk and/or Folty take the next step next year. That’s just it though...next year.

We can make a bullpen move or two, and that will help. I just don’t see us making that “one player away” move, when we just aren’t there.

It’s more like one year away.

Not really worried about the "first round and out Nats." Not to mention we've owned them this year.

Why would you give up a top 20 prospect for a relief pitcher? I understand we need bullpen help, but bullpen arms are a dime a dozen and so volatile. I would much rather keep the pitching prospects we have and turn them into relievers if they falter starting.

In today's game, relief pitchers aren't a dime-a-dozen. The fact we have someone like Moylan eating innings (and some relatively important ones at that) proves we need some help out there. Failed starters don't automatically become stellar relief pitchers. Maybe I misspoke when I said a top twenty prospect, but if we could move someone like Sims (realize Sims alone won't net us much) for some bullpen help, that would be a plus. In the playoffs, it's all about shortening the game. Our bullpen in its current shape really isn't equipped for that.
