    September 1st:

    1890: The Brooklyn Bridegrooms (later known as the Dodgers) sweep all three games from the Pittsburgh Alleghenys (later known as the Pirates) in the first tripleheader in M.L. history, winning the games by scores of 10-9, 3-2, and 8-4.

    1906: The A's beat the Red Sox 4-1 in 24 innings, the longest in A.L. history. The A's Jack Coombs and the Red Sox Joe Harris both pitch the distance.

    1931: Lou Gehrig hits his third grand slam in a span of four days.

    1945: In an 8-3 win over the Braves, the Phillies Vince DiMaggio ties a M.L. record with his fourth grand slam of the season.

    1958: In a 1-0 win over the Reds, the Cardinals Vinegar Bend Mizell sets a N.L. record by allowing nine walks without allowing a run.

    1963: In a 7-3 win over the Phillies, the Cardinals Curt Simmons becomes the last pitcher in M.L. history to steal home.

    1967: In the Giants 21-inning, 1-0 win over the Reds, Gaylord Perry pitches 16 scoreless innings, extending his streak to 40 innings.

    1975: The Mets Tom Seaver becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 200 strikeouts in eight straight seasons.

    1998: With two homers against the Marlins, the Cardinals Mark McGwire breaks Hack Wilson's N.L. record of 56 home runs in a season.

    2007: The Red Sox Clay Buchholz pitches a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over the Orioles.

    1955: In a 12-2 win over the Cardinals, the Cubs Ernie Banks hits his 40th home run of the season, setting a record for homers by a shortstop.

    1957: In the first of a doubleheader, the Braves Frank Torre ties a M.L. record by scoring six runs in the 23-10 victory over the Cubs.

    1960: Ted Williams homers off the Senators Don Lee. Williams hit several home runs off Lee's father, Thornton.

    1962: In a 4-3 loss to the Mets, the Cardinals Stan Musial collects his 3,516th career hit, moving past Tris Speaker for second on the all time list.

    1965: The Cubs Ernie Banks hits his 400th career home run.

    1965: With the team moving to Anaheim the next season, Angels owner Gene Autry announces the team will be known as the California Angels.

    1973: On the last day of his three-day suspension for ordering his pitcher to throw spitballs, Billy Martin is fired as Tigers manager.

    1975: In a 7-3 win over the Dodgers, the Giants Johnny LeMaster becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit an inside-the-park in his first at bat.

    1986: The Astros and Cubs set a M.L. record by using 53 players. The Astros win 8-7 in 18 innings.

    1987: In a 10-1 win over the Cubs, the Astros Kevin Bass becomes the first player in N.L. history to homer from both side of the plate twice in a season.

    1990: The Blue Jays Dave Stieb pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Indians. It's the ninth of the season in MLB, setting a record.

    1996: The Red Sox Mike Greenwell drives in all of Boston's runs in a 9-8 10-inning win over the Mariners.

    1999: The Orioles cal Ripken, Jr. hits his 400th career home run.

    2001: For the first time in M.L. history, four games end with a 1-0 score. The Yankees, Padres, Astros, and Blue Jays beat the Red Sox, Diamondbacks, Brewers, and Tigers respectively by that score.

    2006: The Indians Kevin Kouzmanoff becomes the third player in M.L. history (the Phillies Bill Duggleby 1898 and the Marlins Jeremy Heremida in 2005) to hit a grand slam in his first M.L. at bat.

    1917: The Phillies Grover Cleveland Alexander pitches two complete games in sweeping a doubleheader over the Dodgers by scores of 5-0 and 9-3.

    1947: The A's Bill McCahan pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Senators.

    1957: With an 8-0 win over the Cubs, the Braves Warren Spahn sets the M.L. record for left-handers with his 41st career shutout.

    1961: Mickey Mantle hits his 50th home run of the season, making him and Roger Maris the first teammates to both hit 50 homers in the same season.

    1977: Japan star Sadaharu Oh hits his 756th career home run, passing Hank Aaron for the most in professional baseball history.

    1985: The Angels Reggie Jackson becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 100 home runs for three different teams, doing that as well for the A's and Yankees.

    1990: In a 4-2 win over the Royals, the White Sox Bobby Thigpen records his 47th save of the season, breaking the M.L. record.

    1996: In a 12-5 win over the Astros, the Cardinals Todd Stottlemyre wins his 95th career win. Combined with dad Mel's 164, their combined 259 wins are the most for a father/son combo in M.L. history.

    2000: The Indians Kenny Lofton score a run in his 18th straight game, tying the M.L. record.

    2001: The Cardinals Bud Smith pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Padres.

    2002: The Mets set a N.L. record with their 15th straight loss at home.

    2007: The Mets Pedro Martinez becomes the 15th pitcher in M.L. history to record 3,000 strikeouts.

    2008: Though the attendance is announced at 11,211, fewer than 600 fans actually show up at Dolphins Stadium to see the Marlins beat the Braves 5-3.

    2009: In a 2-1 victory over the Giants, the Phillies Pedro Martinez becomes the tenth pitcher in M.L. history to record 100 wins in both leagues.

    1906: The New York Highlanders finish off playing five straight doubleheaders in a six day span with a sweep over the Boston Americans. The Highlanders swept all five doubleheaders.

    1916: In the only game he pitched that he wasn't a member of the Giants, Reds player/manager Christy Mathewson defeats the Cubs and long time rival Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown 10-8. In their 25 meetings against each other, Mathewson won 13.

    1923: The Yankees Sam Jones pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the A's. Jones did so without recording a strikeout.

    1924: The Dodgers sweep a pair from the Braves, ending a string of four doubleheader sweeps in four days.

    1928: The Boston Braves start a streak of nine straight doubleheaders, setting a M.L. record.

    1941: The Yankees clinch the A.L. pennant, marking the earliest in M.L. history a team won a league championship.

    1966: The Dodgers become the first team in M.L. history to draw two million fans both at home and on the road.

    1985: Gary Carter ties a M.L. record by hitting five home runs in a two game span.

    1986: Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg dies at age 75.

    1993: The Yankees Jim Abbot pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Indians.

    1995: In a 14-3 win over the Rangers, the White Sox Robin Ventura becomes the eighth player in M.L history to hit two grand slams in the same game.

    1998: The Yankees defeat the White Sox 11-6 to win their 100th game of the season. It marked the earliest in M.L. history for a team to win their 100th game in a season.

    1999: In a 22-3 win over the Phillies, the Reds set a N.L. record by hitting nine home runs.

    2002: The A's defeat the Royals 12-11 to set an A.L. record with their 20th straight win.

    2010: In a 12-4 win over the Rangers, the Twins Jim Thome hits his 583rd and the 584th home runs of his career, passing Mark McGwire for eighth on the all-time list.

    1908: Nap Rucker of the Brooklyn Superbas pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Boston Doves.

    1914: While pitching for the AAA Providence Grays and pitching a 9-0 shutout over the Toronto Maple Leafs, 19 year old Babe Ruth hits his first home run in professional baseball.

    1918: Babe Ruth collects six hits in helping the Red Sox win Game 1 of the World Series against the Cubs.

    1921: The Indians Elmer Smith sets a M.L. record with seven extra base hits over a two day span.

    1936: Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski is born in Wheeling, West Virginia.

    1955: In an 11-4 win over the Phillies, the Dodgers Don Newcombe hits his seventh home run of the season, setting the record in the N.L. for pitchers.

    1960: At age 41, Pirates relief pitcher Diomedes Olivo becomes the oldest player in N.L. history to make his M.L. debut. He pitched two scoreless innings against the Braves.

    1971: The Astros J.R. Richard pitches a complete game in his M.L. debut, helping Houston beat the Giants 5-3.

    1979: The A's Matt Keough breaks his 18-game losing streak with a 6-1 win over the Brewers. That streak was one shy of the A.L. record.

    1995: Cal Ripken Jr. ties Lou Gehrig's record of 2,130 consecutive games played.

    1998: The Cardinals Mark McGwire becomes the third player to hit 60 home runs in a season. He was the fastest to do so.

    1999: In a 9-7 win over the Phillies, the Red hit five home runs and also set a M.L. record with 14 home runs over two straight games. The prior day, they hit nine against the Phillies.

    2003: In a 6-2 win over the Marlins, the Expos Todd Zeile homers for his eleventh M.L. team, setting a record.

    2007: Bob Sheppard works his final game as the P.A. announcer at Yankee Stadium. He held that job since 1951, working over 4,500 games.

    1905: The White Sox Frank Smith pitches a no-hitter in a 15-0 win over the Tigers. It was the biggest rout in a no-hitter.

    1912: Smokey Joe Wood and the Red Sox defeat Walter Johnson and the Senators 1-0. For Wood, it was his 14th straight win and his overall 30th of the season.

    1912: Giants rookie Jeff Tesreau pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Phillies.

    1974: Dave McNally and Mike Cuellar both pitch complete game shutouts as the Orioles sweep a doubleheader 2-0 and 1-0 over the Indians. It extended the Orioles shutout streak to five games while also setting an A.L. record by pitching 54 straight scoreless innings.

    1981: With a 5-0 win over the Cardinals, the Dodgers Fernando Valenzuela ties the N.L. record with his seventh shutout of the season.

    1981: Gene Michael is fired as Yankees manager and is replaced by Bob Lemon.

    1995: Cal Ripken breaks Lou Gehrig's record by playing in his 2,131st straight game. When the game becomes official, the fans in Baltimore give Ripken a standing ovation for 22 minutes. During the ovation, Ripken would take a lap around the field.

    1996: Four months after surgery for throat cancer, Brett Butler returns to the lineup and helps the Dodgers beat the Pirates 3-2. Butler scored the winning run.

    1996: The Orioles Eddie Murray becomes the 15th player in M.L. history to hit 500 home runs.

    2001: Barry Bonds becomes the fifth player in M.L. history to hit 60 home runs in a season.*

    2005: The Pirates fire manager Lloyd McClendon.

    2006: The Marlins Anibal Sanchez pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

    2009: The Mariners Ichiro Suzuki becomes the second quickest player in M.L. history to record 2,000 hits. Only Al Simmons in 1933 did it faster.

    Personal note: Cal Ripken, Jr. breaking Lou Gehrig's record is still my favorite non-Braves moment in baseball history.

    1896: A day after sweeping a triple-header, Baltimore completes a doubleheader sweep over Louisville, setting the M.L. record with five wins over two days.

    1916: The A's Wally Schang becomes the first player in M.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game. The game against the Yankees sets another A.L. record. Only 23 fans attend the game on a rainy day at Shibe Park, marking the smallest attended game in A.L. history.

    1925: In a 7-4 Yankees win over the Red Sox, Babe Ruth hits his 300th career home run.

    1933: Red Sox outfielder Mel Amada makes his M.L. debut against the Tigers. He becomes the first player from Mexico in M.L. history.

    1939: With a 12-1 victory over the Browns, the Indians Bob Feller becomes the youngest pitcher in the modern era to win 20 games.

    1955: With a 10-2 win over the Braves, the Dodgers win the N.L. championship. It marks the earliest in M.L. history a team has won a pennant.

    1957: The Giants defeat the Dodgers 3-2 at the Polo Grounds. It was the final meeting in New York before the two teams would move to California the next season.

    1973: Six days after being fired by the Tigers, Billy Martin agrees to a multi-year deal to be the Rangers manager.

    1980: After a drug arrest the prior month, Fergie Jenkins is suspended by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn. A week later, an independent arbiter lifts the suspension.

    1985: The Reds Pete Rose collects two hits off the Cubs Reggie Patterson to tie Ty Cobb's all time record of 4,191 hits.

    1993: The Astros Darryl Kile pitches a no-hitter in a 7-1 win over the Mets.

    1995: The Indians clinch the A.L. Central with a 3-2 win over the Orioles, ensuring the team's first postseason appearance since 1954.

    1996: The Mets Todd Hundley joins Mickey Mantle as the only switch-hitters in M.L history to hit 40 home runs in a season.

    1996: Gary Sheffield hits the 4,459th home run of the M.L. season, setting a record.

    1998: In the fourth inning off the Cubs Steve Trachsel, Mark McGwire hits his 62nd home run of the season, breaking Roger Maris' single season record set in 1961.*

    2002: Rafael Palmerio hits a home run off the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, helping the Rangers set a M.L. record by hitting a homer in 26 straight games.

    2005: In a New York/Penn League game, the Vermont Expos defeat the Tri-City ValleyCats 15-9. It marks the final time the Expos would appear on a baseball uniform.

    1914: The Braves George Davis pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Phillies.

    1936: The Yankees sweep a doubleheader over the Indians to clinch the A.L. Pennant.

    1945: The A's Dick Fowler pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Browns.

    1948: The Dodgers Rex Barney pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Giants.

    1960: Ted Williams hits his 511th home run in his career, tying Mel Ott for third on the all-time list.

    1965: The Dodgers Sandy Koufax pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the Cubs. It was his fourth no-hitter.

    1968: Joe Gordon is named the manager of the expansion Kansas City Royals. He had managed in Kansas City before with the A's.

    1977: Tigers shortstop Alan Trammel and second baseman Lou Whitaker make their M.L. debuts. They would be the Tigers double play combo for 19 seasons.

    1987: The Astros Nolan Ryan strikes out the Giants Mike Aldrette to end the seventh inning. It was his 4,500th career strikeout.

    1988: In a 5-4, 11 inning win over the Braves, the Padres Bruce Sutter records his 300th save. It turned out to be Sutter's final M.L. appearance.

    1992: The Brewers Robin Yount records his 3,000th hit.

    1997: Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn dies at age 70.

    1999: Hall of Famer Catfish Hunter dies at age 53.

    2002: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson breaks his own M.L. record with his fifth straight season of 300 strikeouts.

    2002: The Braves clinch the N.L. East to win their eleventh straight divisional title.

    2004: In a 26-5 win over the Tigers, the Royals Joe Randa becomes the first player in A.L. history to score six runs and collect six hits in a nine-inning game.

    2010: The Mariners Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first player in M.L. history to record ten straight seasons off 200 hits.

    1881: Roger Connor of the Troy Trojans hits the first grand slam in M.L. history in a 7-4 win over the Worcester Ruby Legs.

    1919: The Indians Ray Caldwell pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Yankees.

    1950: The Red Sox finish a home sweep of a series over the A's for the second straight season. It extended their home win streak over the A's to 22 games.

    1959: At age 17, Tim McCarver makes his M.L. debut, flying out in the ninth inning as a pinch hitter in a 7-4 loss to the Braves.

    1963: In the Mets 4-2 win over the Giants, Carlton Wiley sets down all three Alou brothers (Jesus, Matty, and Felipe) in one inning. The Alou Brothers become the first siblings in M.L. history to back consecutively in one inning.

    1967: The White Sox Joe Horlen pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Tigers.

    1974: In an 8-2 loss to the Phillies, Lou Brock steals his 104th base of the season to tie Maury Wills' record, then breaks it later in the game with #105.

    1980: In a 4-2 win over the Cubs, the Expos Bill Gullickson sets a M.L. rookie record with 18 strikeouts.

    1997: The Cardinals Mark McGwire joins Babe Ruth as the only players in M.L. history to record 50 home runs in consecutive seasons.

    2000: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson becomes the 12th pitcher in M.L. history to record 3,000 strikeouts. He does so on his 37th birthday.

    2002: In a 3-2 win over the Mariners, the Rangers Alex Rodriguez hits his 52nd and 53rd home runs of the season, breaking the record for shortstops he set the prior season.

    2006: In a 4-3 win over the Blue Jays, the Angels Francisco Rodriguez becomes the youngest pitcher in M.L. history to record 100 saves.

    2008: With a 4-2 win over the Yankees, the Angels win the A.L. West, marking the quickest a team had won that division.

    1902: John Malarkey of the Boston Beaneaters becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to hit a walk-off home run. He hits it leading off the bottom of the 11th inning to beat the Cardinals.

    1912: The A's Eddie Collins steals six bases in a 9-7 win over the Tigers.

An emotional Rivera leaves the mound in front of a standing ovation from the sellout crowd.
