    July 1st:

    1859: Amherst defeats Williams College 73-32 in the first college baseball game ever played.

    1910: The White Sox lose to the Browns 2-0 in the first game at Comiskey Park.

    1920: The Senators Walter Johnson pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Red Sox.

    1941: Joe DiMaggio extends his hitting streak to 44 games, tying the ML record set in 1897 by Wee Wee Keeler.

    1945: After being away from baseball for four years serving in the Armed Forces, Hank Greenberg homers in his first game back, helping the Tigers to a 9-5 win over the A's.

    1951: Bob Feller pitches his third career no-hitter in the Indians 2-1 win over the Tigers. He joins Larry Corcoran and Cy Young as the only ones to pitch three no-hitters.

    1982: Cal Ripken Jr. moves from third base to shortstop.

    2003: The Mets trade Roberto Alomar to the White Sox for three players.

    2010: The Giants trade Bengie Molina and cash to the Rangers for reliever Chris Ray and a minor leaguer.

    2010: The Diamondbacks fire manager AJ Hinch and is replaced on an interim basis by bench coach Kirk Gibson.

    1912: In the Giants 2-1 win over Brooklyn, Rube Marquand wins his 19th straight game to start the season, the longest such streak to start a year in ML history.

    1936: Playing for San Diego in the Pacific Coast League, Ted Williams records his first professional hit.

    1947: The Indians purchase Larry Doby from the Newark Eagles.

    1966: In a 17-3 win over the Giants, Braves pitcher Tony Cloninger becomes the first player in NL history to hit two grand slams in the same game.

    1970: The Angels Clyde Wright pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the A's.

    1993: Hall of Famer Don Drysdale dies at age 56.

    2001: In a 6-5 win over the Rockies, the Padres tie a NL record with four sacrifice flies.

    2006: In the Giants 5-3 win over the Phillies, Barry Bonds (41), Steve Finley (41), and Moises Alou (40) make up the first All 40 year old outfield in ML history.

    2010: With two home runs, the Twins Jim Thome passes the 574 hit by Harmon Killebrew to move into tenth place all time.

    1938: In the first two games at Philadelphia's Shibe Park, the Phillies lose the first of a doubleheader 10-5 to the Boston Bees and win the nightcap 10-2.

    1939: The Yankees honor Lou Gehrig, making him the first to have his number retired. After initially being too moved to speak, Gehrig changes his mind and addresses the crowd, making one of the most famous speeches in sports history, proclaming himself "the luckiest man on the face of the Earth".


    1980: In the second inning of the Astros 8-1 loss to the Reds, Nolan Ryan strikes out Cesar Geronimo for his 3,000th strikeout. Geronimo was also the 3,000th strikeout for Bob Gibson in 1974.

    1983: The Yankees Dave Righetti pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Red Sox.

    1984: The Yankees Phil Niekro records his 3,000th strikeout.

    1985: In one of the craziest games in ML history, the Mets outlast the Braves 16-13 in 19 innings. The game took more than six hours to play and ended just before 4:00 in the morning. Despite the early morning hour, the 1,000 fans who stayed at Atlanta Fulton-County Stadium was treated to the scheduled July 4th fireworks show. The fireworks caused some nearby residents to call police, thinking the city was being attacked.

    1999: The Devil Rays Jose Canseco becomes the first player in ML history to hit 30 home runs with four different teams. He also did so with the A's, Rangers, and Blue Jays.

    2004: With the selection of Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Ken Griffey Jr. to the NL All Star team, it marked the first time three players with 500 home runs were on the same team.

    2006: The Mets Billy Wagner records his 300th save.

    1898: When she pitches for Reading of the Eastern League, Lizzie Arlington becomes the first woman to play organized baseball.

    1947: Larry Doby makes his debut with the Indians, making him the first black player in AL history.

    1951: Hall of Famer Goose Gossage is born in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

    1953: In a 2-0 Phillies win over the Pirates, Robin Roberts pitches his 28th straight complete game, a streak on August 28, 1952.

    1987: In the A's 6-2 win over the Red Sox, Mark McGwire becomes the first rookie to hit 30 home runs before the All Star Break.

    1987: The Giants trade Keith Comstock, Mark Grant, Mark Davis, and Chris Brown to the Padres for Kevin Mitchell, Dave Dravecky, and Craig Lefferts.

    1991: By unanimous vote, the owners give final approval for new NL teams in Miami and Denver.

    1998: Roger Clemens records his 3,000th strikeout.

    2002: Ted Williams dies at age 83.

    1952: In the first All Star Game called early, the NL wins the rain shortened game 3-2 in five innings.

    1958: The AL wins the All Star Game 4-3 at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium.

    1959: The Reds fire manager Mayo Smith and replace him with Fred Hutchinson.

    1976: In the Padres 6-3 victory over the Cubs, Randy Jones records his 16th win, the most in NL history before the All Star Break.

    2005: In a secret vote, the International Olympic Committee votes to eliminate baseball and softball for the 2012 London games, marking the first time since polo was dropped in 1936 that any sport had been eliminated.

    2008: The A's trade Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin to the Cubs for Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson, Matt Murton, and catching prospect Josh Donaldson.

    1903: In a Tri-State League game aganst York, PA, Dan McClellan of the Philadelphia Giants pitches a perfect game.

    1940: The NL wins the All Star Game 4-0 at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.

    1946: The AL wins the All Star Game 12-0 at Fenway Park.

    1953: Robin Roberts' consecutive complete games streak ends at 28.

    1963: The NL wins the All Star Game 5-3 at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium.

    1968: In the first All Star Game played indoors, the NL wins 1-0 at Houston's Astrodome.

    1971: The A's wins the longest shutout in AL history, defeating the Angels 1-0 in 20 innings. The winning run is scored in the bottom of the 20th on Angel Mangual's RBI single.

    1976: The Astros Larry Dierker pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Expos.

    1988: With his 100th victory with the Astros, Nolan Ryan joins Cy Young as the only pitchers to win 100 games in both leagues.

    1991: The AL wins the All Star Game 4-2.

    1996: The NL wins the All Star Game 6-0 at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.

    1998: After serving as acting commissioner for six years, Brewers owner Bud Selig is voted to permanently take the job. To avoid a conflict of interest, his ownership of the Brewers is placed in a trust.

    2002: At Milwaukee's Miller Park, the All Star Game ends in a 7-7 tie after 10 innings, despite chants of "let them play" by the fans.

    2011: Derek Jeter, on a third inning home run off the Rays David Price, collects his 3,000th hit.

    1934: At the All Star Game in the Polo Grounds, the Giants Carl Hubbell strikes out five straight future Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Joe Cronin, and Al Simmons.

    1936: In the Phillies 9-6 win over the Pirates, Chuck Klein becomes the first NL player this century to hit four home runs in a game.

    1951: The NL wins the All Star Game 8-3 at Detroit's Briggs Stadium.

    1954: Hall of Famer Andre Dawson is born in Miami, Florida.

    1962: At Washington, John F. Kennedy becomes the first US President to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the All Star Game. He watches the NL win 3-1.

    1968: The American and National Leagues agree on expansion and playoff format for the next season. Both leagues will have two six team divisions with the division champions playing in a best of five league championship series.

    1972: The Phillies fire manager Frank Lucchesi and replace him with GM Paul Owens.

    1984: During the NL's 3-1 win in the All Star Game at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, Fernando Valenzuela and Dwight Gooden combine to strike out six straight AL hitters. The 19 year old Gooden became the youngest player in All Star Game history.

    2001: The AL wins the All Star Game 4-1 at Seattle's Safeco Field. Making his final appearance in the game, Cal Ripken Jr. homers in the second inning and takes MVP honors.

    2009: The Giants Jonathan Sanchez pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Padres.

    1914: Making his ML debut, Babe Ruth pitches the Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the Indians.

    1939: The AL wins the All Star Game 3-1 at Yankee Stadium.

    1944: The NL wins the All Star Game 7-1 at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field.

    1950: Red Schoendienst's 14th inning home run helps the NL win the All Star Game 4-3 at Comiskey Park. It was the first All Star Game to go to extra innings, first time the NL won at an AL Park, and the first to be broadcasted on national television.

    1961: The NL wins the All Star Game 5-4 at Candlestick Park.

    1967: In the longest All Star Game, the NL wins 2-1 in 15 innings at Anaheim Stadium. Tony Perez's home run off Catfish Hunter scored the winning run.

    1976: In a promotion called Headlocks and Wedlocks at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, 34 couples are married before the Mets/Braves Game and wrestling afterward. In between, the Braves beat the Mets 9-8.

    1978: The NL wins the All Star Game 7-3 at San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium.

    1985: Nolan Ryan records his 4,000th strikeout.

    1989: Bo Jackson, on his way to game MVP honors, leads off the All Star Game with a home run, helping the AL win 5-3 at Anaheim.

    1995: The NL wins the All Star Game 3-2 at The Ballpark in Arlington.

    2000: The AL wins the All Star Game 6-3 at Turner Field in Atlanta.

    2002: The Indians fire manager Charlie Manuel and replace him with third base coach Joel Skinner on an interim basis.

    2002. The Marlins trade Ryan Dempster to the Reds for Juan Encarnacion. The Marlins also trade Cliff Floyd, Wilton Guerrero, and prospect Claudio Vargas to the Expos for Carl Pavano, Graeme Lloyd, Mike Mordecai, and prospect Justin Wayne.

    2006: Michael Young's two run triple in the eighth gives the AL a 3-2 win in the All Star Game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

    2010: Bob Sheppard, the PA announcer at Yankee Stadium for 56 years, dies at age 99.

    1971: During the AL's 6-4 win in the All Star Game at Tiger Stadium, Reggie Jackson hits a 520 foot home run off a power generator on the right field roof.

    1976: The NL wins the All Star Game 7-1 at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium.

    1982: In the first All Star Game played outside the United States, the NL wins the 11th straight, 4-1 at Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

    1991: Four Orioles pitchers, Bob Milacki, Mike Flanagan, Mark Williamson, and Gregg Olson, combine to pitch a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the A's.

    1993: The AL wins the All Star Game 9-3 at Camden Yards in Baltimore. The game is most remembered for John Kruk's strikeout after a Randy Johnson pitch sails over his head.


    1999: Prior to the All Star Game at Fenway Park, players from both teams gather around in tribute to Red Sox legend Ted Williams. In the game, won by the AL 2-0, Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez strikes out five of the first six hitters.

    2004: The AL wins the All Star Game 9-4 at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

    2009: The Nationals fire manager Manny Acta.

    2010: The Braves Brian McCann's three run double in the seventh lifts the NL to a 3-1 win in the All Star Game, their first victory since 1996.


    2013: The Giants Tim Lincecum pitches a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Padres.

    1956: The Red Sox Mel Parnell pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the White Sox.

    1967: The Astros Eddie Mathews hits his 500th career home run.

    1968: Hank Aaron hits his 500th career home run.

    1970: In the 12th inning of the All Star Game at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium, Pete Rose runs over Indians catcher a Ray Fosse, scoring the winning run in the NL's 5-4 victory. The collision at home plate would shorten Fosse's career.


    1995: The Dodgers Ramon Martinez pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Marlins.

    2004: The Astros fire manager Jimy Williams and replace him on an interim basis with Phil Garner.

    2005: With a 4-3 victory over their long time rival Dodgers, the Giants become the first team in ML history to win 10,000 games.

    2009: The AL wins the All Star Game 4-3 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

    2010: The Blue Jays trade Alex Gonzalez along with minor leaguers Tyler Pastornicky and Tim Collins to the Braves for Yunel Escobar and Jo Jo Reyes.

    1901: The Giants Christy Mathewson becomes the first rookie in the modern to pitch a no-hitter, doing so in a 5-0 win over the Cardinals.

    1962: In the seventh inning of a doubleheader nightcap against the Pirates, Stan Musial comes to bat for the 10,428th time, breaking the NL record.

    1967: Bob Gibson fractures his fibula after taking a line drive from Roberto Clemente. He would return to the Cardinals on Labor Day.

    1973: Nolan Ryan pitches a no-hitter in the Angels 6-0 win over the Tigers. He becomes the first to throw two conventional no-hitters in the same season.

    1980: Johnny Bench hits his 314tn home run as a catcher, breaking Yogi Berra's record.

    1986: The AL wins the All Star Game 3-2 at the Astrodome. It turned out to be the final game managed by Dick Howser. The Royals manager had lapses during the game and said he felt ill. He would be diagnosed with a brain tumor.

    1996: After 2,216 straight starts at shortstop, Cal Ripken Jr. return to third base for the first time since June 30, 1982.

    1999: The Mariners lose to the Padres 3-2 in the first game at Safeco Field.

    2003: The Rangers Hank Blalock hits a two run home run off Eric Gagne in bottom of the eighth, giving the AL a 7-6 win at the All Star Game at US Cellular Field.

    2005: Rafael Palmerio records his 3,000th hit.

    2007: With a 10-2 defeat to the Cardinals, the Phillies become the first team to lose 10,000 games.

    2008: In the longest game time wise in All Star history, the AL wins in 15 innings 4-3 on a sacrifice fly by Michael Young. The game at Yankee Stadium took four hours and 50 minutes. Dan Uggla became the first in All Star Game history to commit three errors.

    1897: Cap Anson becomes the first player in ML history to record 3,000 hits.

    1948: Branch Rickey agrees to a deal that allows Leo Durocher to be released as Dodgers manager and take the same position with the Giants, replacing Mel Ott. Burt Shotton takes over as Dodgers manager.

    1956: The Tigers and Briggs Stadium are sold to a syndicate led by radio executives John Fetzer and Fred Knorr for $5.5 million.

    1970: The Pirates lose to the Reds 3-2 in the first game at Three Rivers Stadium.

    1975: Bowie Kuhn is reelected to a second term as commissioner.

    1985: The NL wins the All Star Game 6-1 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

    1990: The White Sox Steve Lyons slides head first into first base to beat out a bunt. After the play, he drops his pants to brush dirt out of his uniform in front of more than 14,000 surprised fans at Tiger Stadium.


    2003: The Mets trade Armando Benitez to the Yankees for three pitching prospects.

    2005: The Yankees acquire pitcher Al Leiter from the Marlins.

    2006: The Yankees Mariano Rivera record his 400th save.

    2006: The Braves Chipper Jones ties a ML record by recording an extra base hit in 14 straight games.

    2013: The AL wins the All Star Game 3-1 at Citi Field.

    1936: With the Giants 6-0 win over the Pirates, Carl Hubbell's 24 game winning streak begins.

    1941: Joe DiMaggio's ML record 56 game hitting streak comes to an end against the Indians in Cleveland.

    1961: Ty Cobb dies at age 74.

    1974: Bob Gibson becomes the second pitcher in ML history to record 3,000 strikeouts, joining Walter Johnson as the only ones to do so.

    1974: Hall of Famer Dizzy Dean dies at age 64.

    1976: The Dodgers Walter Alston records his 2,000th managerial win in a 5-4 victory over the Cubs.

    1978: The Yankees suspend Reggie Jackson five days without pay because of striking out trying to bunt after Billy Martin told him to swing away.

    1979: The NL wins the All Star Game 7-6 at Seattle's Kingdome.

    1987: The Yankees Don Mattingly becomes the first player in AL history to homer in seven straight games.

    1990: In a 1-0 loss to the Red Sox, the Twins become the first team in ML history to turn two triple plays in the same game.

    2008: The A's trade Joe Blanton to the Phillies for three prospects.

    1970: The Dodgers Bill Singer pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Phillies.

    1976: In the Brewers 6-2 win over the Angels, Hank Aaron hits the final home run of his career, hitting it off Dick Dragon.

    2006: The Indians trade Bob Wickman to the Braves for minor league catcher Max Ramirez.

    1983: The AL record streak of 244 straight games without an error for the Angels Brian Downing comes to an end.

    2007: Tulsa Drillers first base coach Mike Coolbaugh is killed when he is struck in the head by a line drive. It is just the second on field fatality in baseball history.

    2012: Barry Larkin is inducted into the Hall of Fame. Ron Santo is also inducted posthumously.

    2013: The Cubs trade Matt Garza to the Rangers for minor leaguers Mike Olt, C.J. Edwards, and Justin Grimm.

    1890: In his final minor league appearance, Cy Young pitches a no-hitter and strikes out 18 in a Tri-State Leagur game against McKeesport, PA.

    1941: The Red Sox Lefty Grove becomes the sixth pitcher in ML history to win 300 games.

    1955: Joe DiMaggio is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1962: Stan Musial records his 1,862nd RBI, breaking Mel Ott's NL record.

    1966: Ted Williams is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1972: The Cubs announce Whitey Lockman will replace Leo Durocher as manager.

    1977: Pete Rose records his 2,881st career hit, making him the leader among switch-hitters.

    1978: Pete Rose extends his hitting streak to 38 games, breaking the NL record.

    1990: In between games of a Padres doubleheader against the Reds in San Diego, actress Roseanne Barr sings an irreverent version of the national anthem, after which she spits on the ground and grabs her crotch as if she was adjusting a protective cup. She gets widespread criticism, including from President George H. W. Bush, who called her performance "disgraceful".

    1999: For the first time, three first ballot Hall of Famers are inducted as Nolan Ryan, George Brett, and Robin Yount enter Cooperstown. They are joined by Veterans Committee inductees Orlando Cepeda, Nestor Chylak, Frank Seelee, and Smokey Joe Williams.

    2004: Paul Molitor and Dennis Eckersley are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    2010: The Diamondbacks trade Dan Haren to the Angels for Joe Saunders, Patrick Corbin, Rafael Rodriguez, and a player to be named later.

    1952: The Reds fire manager Luke Sewell.

    1963: Stan Musial strikes out three times against the Cubs. It was the only time in a career that spanned 3,026 games that he did so.

    1970: Angels catcher Tom Egan gets charged with five passed balls and commits the error that allows the winning run to score in a 6-5 loss to the Yankees.

    1976: The White Sox John "Blue Moon" Odom and Francisco Barrios combine to pitch a no-hitter in a 2-1 win over the A's.

    1983: AL President Lee MacPhail decides George Brett's pine tar home run should count. The remainder of the game will be played on August 18th, which the Royals win 5-4.

    1985: Lou Brock, Arky Vaughn, Enos Slaughter, and Hoyt Wilhelm are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1991: The Expos Dennis Martinez pitches a perfect game in a 2-0 win over the Dodgers.

    1993: Ken Griffey Jr ties a ML record by homering in his eighth consecutive game.

    1994: The Rangers Kenny Rogers pitches a perfect game in a 4-0 win over the Angels.

    1995: The Yankees trade Danny Tartabull to the A's for Ruben Sierra and Jason Beverlin. They also trade Marty Janzen and two minor leaguers for David Cone.

    2000: The Mets acquire Mike Bordick from the Orioles for Melvin Mora, Mike Kinkade, and two minor leaguers. They also acquire Bubba Trammel and Rick White from the Devil Rays for minor leaguers Jason Tyner and Paul Wilson.

    2002: Ozzie Smith is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    2002: The White Sox trade Kenny Lofton to the Giants for two minor leaguers.

    2005: Frisco Roughrider pitchers AJ Murray, Steve Karsay, and Scott Feldman combine to pitch a perfect game in a 3-0 win over the Corpus Christi Hooks. It was the first nine inning perfect game in the 117 year history of the Texas League.

    2007: MLB establishes a new single day attendance record as 717,478 fans attend games.

    2011: The Mets trade Carlos Beltran to the Giants for top pitching prospect Zach Wheeler.

    Ahh yes... The old Andrus, Harrison, Saltalamacchia, Perez, Jones, and one year of Mark Teixeria for Casey freakin Kotchman and Steve Marek. I know JS did the first deal, but Wren only getting those two bums for Teixeira was completely botched.
