Trade winds: Albers for cash, PTBNL arrives from Phillips deal

The Braves acquired minor league corner infielder Kevin Franklin from the Reds as the player to be named later to complete the trade that brought Brandon Phillips to Atlanta back in February, as reported by Dave O'Brien. Franklin, 22, was a second-round draft pick in 2013 as a power-hitting prospect out of a California high school, but he’s been a major disappointment so far, batting .233 with a .281 OBP, .629 OPS and 11 home runs in 210 games over parts of five seasons without making it above Single A.

He hit .179 (15-for-84) with one homer, five RBIs and a .463 OPS in 27 games between Single-A Dayton and High-A Daytona.

The Braves also sent minor league pitchers Andrew McKirahan and Carlos Portuondo to the Reds in that Phillips trade, while the Reds agreed to pay $13 million of Phillips’ $14 million salary this season in the final year of his contract. McKirahan was coming back from a second Tommy John surgery at the time of the trade, and the left-hander is back on the disabled list after pitching 6 2/3 innings on a rehab assignment. Portuondo, 29, made just one appearance for the Reds’ Double-A team before getting released.
    ---------
The Braves have agreed to trade veteran left-hander Andrew Albers to the Mariners for cash considerations, a person familiar with the situation said.

Albers was 12-3 with a 2.61 ERA in 26 games (17 starts) for the Braves’ Triple-A Gwinnett affiliate after signing a minor league deal last winter. The 31-year-old drew some trade interest after a terrific stretch of pitching lately in which he’d posted a 6-0 record and 0.98 ERA in his past eight starts including eight innings of one-run ball in a Thursday win against Louisville. He was expected to report to the Mariners’ Triple-A Tacoma team initially but could soon get a chance to join the big-league rotation.

I know it's odd to reply to your own post, but this Franklin pickup has Kiley McDaniel's fingerprints all over it. As mentioned, Franklin (6-1, 220) was Reds' No.2 pick in 2013 (67th overall). Lorenzen was their comp round pick and Phillip Ervin, was their No. 1 guy.
At the time, it was said it would take time for him to develop his skills, but was rated well as a capable 3B with a strong arm and being a high energy guy. Plus power, light tower power but aggressive swings could set him up for lots of strikeouts. Guessing he was moved to 1B as he got larger and had less mobility. His current listed weight of 220 might be light. Be curious to see if Braves get him to lose weight and move him back to his original position, a la Alex Jackson.

BTW, has generally been called "K.J. Franklin," signed for $675 K.

Likely org filler, I don't expect him to amount to much anything...I expected a little more in return considering they took all of Phillips contract

Albers was a 40 man victim. He pitched well enough to get a call to Atlanta but it's easier to call up a guy like Wisler or Blair.

"All of Phillips' contract"? Dat Dude cost the Braves $1 million this year.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

Not sure Albers didn't have the better profile to help in the pen better than either of those two as well.

It'll also get some screaming, but making room for Soroka in Gwinnett for a couple starts here at the end of their season isn't necessarily the worst thing in the world either IMO.

That's not a problem at all. Just don't start him in the majors next year. Give him time in Gwinnett next year.

If we don't even just give some of these waiver guys away, it's going to be ridiculous. There's absolutely no reason to keep JJ, Neck, Kemp, or BP on this team. Obviously no one will take Kemp but I have a hard time believing no one would take the other 3. If they think BP is the answer at 3rd next year. I may vomit for 3 straight day.

Yep. He will throw 6 innings of 1 run, 0 BB, and 7 K ball, and the casuals will think he is some 22-year-old stud the Braves just gave away for greediness.

Agreed. The Cubs claimed Rene Rivera from the Mets. You'd think we would throw Suzuki out there for them right now (unless some team claimed him and couldn't get a deal done/he was pulled back) and at least get money back.....

You have to think that some AL teams in that WC chase need some BP help and could even use JJ as depth or a 6th/7th inning guy.
