Soon and very soon, Anthopoulos needs to tell Liberty Media: “This is where we are, and this is what we need to get over the line.”

I'm not sure what this means. There is no acquisition or set of acquisitions that guarantees anything in terms of getting "over the line."

What AA has to do is weigh a set of incremental moves. Weigh the expected costs and expected benefits. What he needs to do is get the biggest bang for the buck. For example, a situational lefty is a modest move when looking at bang or buck in isolation. But when you look at the ratio of bang to buck it is your best move. Next best move is less clear. Either left side of the infield or high leverage reliever. But none of this comes with a guarantee. You weigh expected cost and expected benefit. And try to get the biggest bang for the buck.

And then a team with a $200M+ payroll will win the WS while the Braves continue to sit at home pinching pennies. At some point you have to open up the checkbook and spend a little if you want to win it all.

But who's to say spending more won't allow you to make more?

Yes? Ask the Rockies they spend around 100 millions to upgrade the bullpen and they are 43-43 record.

yes and no.... while the reported number of 120M+ might be, the actually money on the field amounts to a paltry 84M, if you include those on the DL, 56M without.

If only the players on field were the only ones they had to actually pay...

Yeah, but the Braves did it to themselves with trades taking on dead salaries amounting to roughly 35M

Right. The Braves did do it to themselves and it was a smart move too. It is what it is. Braves could possibly add a bit due to likely increased attendance throughout the rest of the season and possibly a playoff bump but it won't be much. I fully expect AA to make use of the full payroll next season.

On the limited budget left for this year we can still fill a couple of the team's obvious needs...might have to kick in a slightly better prospect if the other team picks up salary but it's not going to be a top prospect

Your recollection mirrors mine. I can't remember anyone in here defending the Wade Davis contract.

If we still lead the east within a couple days of July 31 I could see Liberty saying ok do what you need to do to make it to October. The extra revenue from the playoffs would pay for whatever extra salary they took on.

We are likely to acquire a situational lefty and someone like Asdrubal Cabrera with and without Liberty's ok to go past budget. I'm not clear what this ok would allow us to do beyond that. I know some folks (including Mr. Bradley) think that we should go after Cole Hamels. Dumb idea with or without Liberty's ok to spend more.

Going after Machado is also a bad idea when you consider the premium that needs to be paid in that sort of trade. Ditto for DeGrom.

Ask Alabama football or the Golden State Warriors.

NY Times did a great piece on the Tide's football program a while back.

It takes a buck to make a buck.

Right but you can't just spend to spend. Has to be smart spending. Without a real owner, might be tougher to convince them of this plan though.

The foundation of the Warriors was a great player (Curry) on an extraordinarily cheap contract.

But they've still been willing to go into the luxury tax.

Thunder would have been a dynasty had they done the same. Remember, they had Harden, Durant, and Westbrook.

Oh yeah, it has to be smart. For sure. Don't go throw 100 million at Ian Desmond or whatever that contract was.
