What are the chances

That after Medlen's evaluation today that (barring bad news) Frank makes a call to Ervin Santana?

Odds of Santana playing for the Braves

.0000001% if the news is good

3.8% if the news is bad

In other words, either way I don't see Wren pursuing Santana. He might make a call, but no serious pursuit.

The main reason is we have about $5M budgeted for a mid-season move or two. It is too early to blow that on a pitcher because the team might have more serious needs by June.

lets say its worst case....Medlen is out for the season. What in your opinion do we do? short term I think we wold be ok with the pieces we have....but if we want to have a sucessful season we would need to make a move IMO.

Worst case scenario, we go with a rotation of Minor, Beachy, Teheran, Wood and Floyd. Garcia and Hale would make some starts until Floyd is ready. In June Wren would evaluate our needs and prioritize. Priorities could include pitching, second, or some other position if a serious injury occurred there. It is too early to presume pitching will be the priority, although if Medlen is out that would obviously increase the odds that that would be the case.

Part of the problem is Wood is on an innings limit.

I hope we throw caution to the wind though honestly and not worry about WOod's inning limit. If he's gonna get hurt he will at 200 innings or 160. ALl inning limits do is maybe delay the inevitable.

Yes. If we lose Medlen, we do lose a lot of our flexibility in terms of limiting Woods innings. At the same time, if his limit is around 170-180 innings, we can do that by skipping 3-4 starts. Last year Teheran did 186 innings in 30 starts. We can have Wood do 175 or so in 28 starts. In effect he would skip 4 starts. That's doable even if we lose Medlen.

Are we still talking about "if" Medlen is lost? We've seen this exact same story before. Hudson and Medlen both had a forearm strain that magically turned into TJ surgery within a few days.

I would be shocked if Medlen throws a baseball this year.

Yeah. I'm not overly optimistic. We should find out soon enough.

It's a terrible enough eventuality for the 2014 Braves, as well as for Medlen's career, that I'm going to plunge into "overly optimistic" territory until it's otherwise impossible.

I wouldn't say go so far as to say the Braves can't afford Santana. If the FO viewed him as a viable option (assuming Medlen is lost) the funds are there. The greater issue, to me, is the draft pick. I don't think Santana is worth the additional cost in that regard.

This news is exactly why Dalyn and others were advocating for additional veteran pitching depth a few weeks ago. The Braves aren't lost without Medlen, but the entire staff is immediately thrust into an uncomfortable flux.

This again? It isn't understood how illogical and detrimental to the future this would be yet?

And how unlikely TB would trade him at this point considering they have a potential world series team.

I think they'd trade him still.
But they'd require a crap-ton of talent in return, like usual, and it would be crippling for us to do it.

Before hitting the panic button, let's wait for the results of Medlen's MRI before speculating on other moves. We only know that's it's forearm strain at this point.

After Beachy's outing this afternoon my finger is on the trigger.

The Rays, a legit WS contender will trade him before the season?

Please explain why.

@jonmorosi: Braves and Rays never talked about David Price during offseason, two sources told me. So I wouldn’t describe him as an option for Atlanta.

Well, that's a major disappointment.

Not much of a surprise, we dont have what it takes for Price.
