I suspect after last year's events with Carter Stewart that the team has a very good idea of what it will take to sign every player drafted.

He’s going to sign, but there’s nothing in that article that indicates he already has.

Pipeline wrote this about Michael Harris: “Some liked him better as a switch-hitting outfielder, but the Braves liked his fastball (up to 93 mph), curve and change, and his solid feel for pitching.”

Strange because everyone else has said outfielder. I’d normally just assume it was a mistake but Callis does have good Braves connections.

I thought it was pointed out in the other draft thread that they announced him as an outfielder. Am I confused again?

All are confused. It reminds me a bit of when we drafted Andrelton Simmons, who most draft analysts projected as a relief pitcher and there were questions about where he'd play all the way up to his first game in Danville. Curious to see what they do with Harris. My guess is that it will be up to the player and what he thinks is his best chance at success.

So it sounds like even Simmons stayed confused since he still hit like a relief pitcher.

Someone posted in another thread that Keith Law mentioned us as a standout draft on a podcast, and his writeup of NL draft recaps just went up. He's really optimistic about our round 11-19 guys. Some notes--

"Atlanta's draft looked light after the first two days, but the Braves did more on Day 3 than any other club, packing their draft with intriguing athletic kids from high school or junior colleges. Atlanta had quite a bit of pool money left over from their top 10 rounds"

"Langeliers is a no-doubt catcher, maybe a 70 defender there, whose production at Baylor might understate his potential with the bat given his exit velocity."

Says Michael Harris has plus-plus raw power with above-average speed and good instincts in center field.

Easily the most optimistic write up I've seen on Paolini: "he has five-tool potential, a 60-70 runner with a 50 arm and plus power now. He's really very interesting for the fifth round, with the kind of profile that gets you on Day 1 if you play in Florida or Texas."

Andy Samuelson in the 12th round - I assumed he was just a filler. Law says he's got a projectable body with a plus curveball currently and hope he can get to average or better velo.

Owens touched 98, sat 94-6 with a future plus curve. Says that the only negative is that he's 5-10.

Jared Johnson touched 96 this spring with a clean arm action. Estes and Backstrom don't turn 18 until October. Backstrom has 70 power and hit. I saw some other places talking about him having a down spring, but Law said he had a strong close to the spring because he got his vision checked out. Kadon Morton is a good athlete who will play center and has a good swing from the right side.

it seems as if drafts shouldn't be judged instantly. could this be true???

It will be interesting to see how Harris, Paolini and Kadon Morton line up in the outfield.

I wonder how much pool money is left and where it goes on the third day guys. I don't imagine there's enough to get more than three or four of them, but there appears to be some good tools with these guys.

I don't know, but we better sign the Backstrom kid. A young high schooler with 70 hit and power? Isn't that typically first round type stuff? Why was he still there?

No problem. I'm a big college baseball fan as well, so I love the draft because of its implications on that sport as well as the Braves. It's a fun event.

I don't have the energy anymore to do the kind of digging that you do, but in the pre-internet days, I used to subscribe to Collegiate Baseball and get some of the best draft-related stuff available. There's a lot more material now and you do a fantastic job of putting it together for the rest of us. Thanks.
