    Bullpen options

It’s no secret our bull pen sucks and is in desperate need of a fix. That has already been discussed at length in numerous threads. I thought it’d be nice to have a central thread with bullpen options people think might help.

I’d like us to sign Craig Kimbrel and just get it over with. Then let him take as mush time as needed to get back to playing shape.

I’d like to see Wright/Touki/Wilson/Freid/Soroka all up on the big league roster. From there you decide who starts and who relieves. It has been mentioned about the tandem starts and I think this could be a newer version of the “opener”

    Folty
    Freid/Touki
    Gausman
    Soroka/ Wilson
    Teheran/Wright

The starter in this case goes around the line up two times unless he is dealing. The reliever, Touki/Wilson/Wright, comes in to get the game to the 7th/8th/ or shut it down in some cases.

    The pen would look like

    Kimbrel - closer
    Minter - set up
    Biddle
    Parsons
    Tomlin- mop up duty
    Touki
    Wilson
    Wright

    Inciarte
    Donaldson
    Freeman
    Acuña
    Neck
    Swanson
    Albies
    Bmac/ Flowers

    Bmac/Flowers
    Culberson
    Camargo
    Joyce

As good a place as any to put this:

Not the mama: Jeff Fletcher of the OCR recently stated that teams signing players with QO attached would have to surrender 2020 pick if the player signed after 2019 draft, is that correct? The narrative has been that teams are waiting until after the draft to not lose any pick, but that doesn’t seem to make sense if Fletcher is correct

    2:33
Craig Edwards: Looking this up. Give me a second.

    2:37
Craig Edwards: quick reading of the CBA, and could be wrong, does seem to provide that provision, though a closer reading is probably necessary. IN any event, a draft pick next year is worth a lot less than one now. I’m not entirely sure the draft pick is what has prevented Kimbrel and Keuchel from signing, though for teams right now, delaying a penalty by a year and not signing a player until you know you are in contention does have its benefits. Probably not enough to where you wouldn’t sign that player today if you wanted or needed him, but there are some small benefits.

If true, it makes waiting until after the draft not nearly as big a deal.

Agreed.Plus the set up listed above would get all of the guys valuable major league innings to have a better idea who will swim and who will wash out

I would be perusing the market looking for buy low options who could provide solid middle relief and look for our high leverage guys internally. There are a boat load of those guys available

If we can get Kimbrel on a 2-3 year deal, though, it should be done. I still think he's just asking too much. Even if we get him, though, we're gonna need 1 or 2 buy low MRP options.

I don’t think I agree about it not being as big of a deal. This draft is a huge one for us with the two first rounders. Having that $1.2 million slotted to our current second round pick is really important to being able to use that towards pick 9 and 21.

Plus since we’d lose our third highest pick for signing Kimbrel, that’s a second rounder in 2019 and a third rounder in 2020. I think that’s a pretty significant deal.

I know Mychal Givens would have cost more than Brach and O'Day, but I wish they could have found a way to acquire him last year.

we will need some reinforcements but until the cavalry arrives I think Snit needs to lean more on Parsons...he looks really good to me

and the team should consider bringing up Clouse

Too bad we let Sam Freeman walk. Could probably use him now.

This is the saddest sentence ever written in English. Our pen is so bad we long for the days of Sam Freeman.

A decision that puzzled me. We have been carrying Tomlin, who has done ok. But I'd rather we have kept Freeman.

The hate for Sam Freeman is unreal to me. When managed well, he was a fine arm. Getting rid of him was one of the dumbest decisions of the offseason.

Agreed. Looking at his game log from last year, he was having a nice year until mid June when he seemed to wear down, giving up 9 earned runs in 6 appearances over 12 days, and he struggled until being placed on the DL at the end of July.

He came back from the DL in mid August and didn't give up a run in his remaining 14 appearances.

AA and Snit need to s*** or get off the pot and make decisions now on which young guys go to the pen.The pen can not sustain a winning way with Biddle and the other throwers. Minter is scary as a closer, Venters may have shot the wad last year, Sobotka has shown no ability to control the game. Tomlin, Carle, and Jackson lack the killer attitude to be effective.

Don't know if Newk, Wright, Winker and others will be better but something needs to be done quickly.

It's less acceptable for professional evaluators to make this sort of mistake than it is for fans.

    No crisis should be wasted.

Often these kinds of situations lead to opportunities for some unknown gems buried in the system. Already Parsons has stepped up. I would like to see more of Webb. And I would like Clouse to be called up. Too bad Dayton is currently injured. I have interest in him too.

This bullpen reminds me a bit of one Bobby Cox had where, for a while, Ken Ray was the only reliably solid reliever. Then Cox brought Ray into the game in a closer spot (I think in the 8th?) and Ray got shelled.

It's silly to feel this way, but Jackson and Winkler are the only two I don't feel pessimistic about at this point. Edit- and nsacpi reminds me of Parsons. He's done well.
