    Beer in clubhouse?

Was watching the AJC's postgame interview video with Jason Grilli and couldn't help but notice in the background that AJ Pierzynski appears to be double-fisting, and swigging, what looks like a couple of Michelob Ultra.

    Video: http://www.ajc.com/videos/news/grill...ng-win/vDNTyC/

A bit surprising to me considering the Braves traditionally conservative clubhouse culture (no beards, no music, etc.)

According to this article in the LA Times 19 MLB teams had gone alcohol-free in their clubhouses as of 2012: http://articles.latimes.com/2012/mar...eroom-20120320

This (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...-call/2023453/) article by Bob Nightengale talks about the camaraderie that is missing without the communal aspect of having a few beers, but also highlights the DUIs, deaths, and alcoholism issues.

Not that it's a particularly big deal or anything -- just thought it was interesting.

What do you think; is alcohol in the clubhouse a potential problem? Or just a way for players to relax after long games?

    Interesting question.

I think there was particular attention paid to this after Josh Hancock's death (edit; I'm sure the article mentions this Didn't read it yet) . I imagine that the rules have more to do with potential liability than morality.

Personally, I think that being able to have a beer with co-workers at work is great for camaraderie and morale-buillding.

Should be fine, but will be blamed if the team starts losing and/or will be reason to cut a guy (see Giles, Marcus)

I see no problem with it unless there is someone with addiction issues on the team.

It's A.J., so let's not assume this is within the clubhouse rules.

Beer in the clubhouse is fine, assuming it's not joined with its evil cousin- fried chicken.

I was the visiting clubhouse manager for the gwinnett braves for several years. Beer is outlawed as well as tobacco on the field. However, it is an out of sight out of kind deal. As long as you are not seen with a can of dip in your hand or beer isn't within sight it's fine...

Some reams would drink more than others. Coaches and managers had a fridge with their own supply. But from what I saw most players were responsible enough to not drink more than a beer or 2. Obviously this is all post game.

Looked like Bethancourt drank some of those while he was trying to hit.

Same was said about last year's backup catcher . . . but in reference to what happened in the bathroom stalls.

He looked tons better behind the plate, though. Good to see.

Most jobs don't allow drinking while at work, not sure why this would be any different.

When I was a bat boy for the Mets for a few years, it was always in their clubhouse. After the games there is a full spread of food, booze, and other normal drinks out on tables. Usually local restaurants would provide the meals.

Most jobs don't allow you to keep 15 million when you suck at it either, but.....

I think the bigger problem is that a wealthy professional baseball player is drinking Michelob LIte. Get some decent beer in there.

That hardly qualifies as beer. Nothing to worry about.

****, it's worse than Mich Lite. It's Mich Ultra.

Now Christian Bethancourt is gonna think that's ok.
