The issue with Lucroy is age. Do we really want to sign a catcher to a big contract covering his age 32-37 seasons?
It's not even an issue. The anoraks here saw a blurb in a DOB column and never dropped it. Nothing serious ever developed. Take note that a certain gasbag on this board was part of that same echo chamber. Meanwhile, at least with Sale, there were multiple, verifable discussions. We can safely put this down in the "will never be a Brave" column. Clearly, they'll have to find one elsewhere, and they've obviously made attempts at acquiring one over at least the last month.
I agree. I think part of the reason the Braves were so reserved in their attempts to acquire Mac or Castro was because they plan to make a run at Lucroy. He would be a "win now" move at a time when the Braves are actually ready to win.
He won't be signing for only 3 years though. He will be looking for the same type of contract Mac and Russell Martin signed...5 years and $82m-$85m (though Mac had a 6th option year attached as well). Lucroy will be 1 year older than Russell, so the realistic opening bid will have to be about 4/70 with a 5th year option for ~$18m with a ~$5m buyout.
I think it's important to realize and come to terms with the realistic cost to acquire Lucroy before we start cooking up scenarios including him on the roster.
mccann will be a hall of famer when he's done. he's on track for 300 home runs if he stays healthy and going to houston won't hurt that prospect.
