I don't believe so. He was considered a foreign professional because he played professionally overseas and is at least 25 years, and therefore is a free agent just like any other major leaguer. The same reason guys like Ohtani and Cespedes will never go through arbitration.

Edit: Or may be their contracts are just written that way. There are too many rules that are very vague on the subject.

No... this has been hashed out and confirmed over and over again by the professionals. He’s a free agent after 2019... no ambiguity about it

That is not what he was asking. Basically asking if the Braves extend him on a 1 year deal we would then retain him through arb years. However, I doubt he ever signs anything without a stipulation similar to this one.

I figured I should update this but Fangraphs recent update of their prospects Allard has again dropped to just a 40 FV. That takes his actual value from 3 million to a paltry 1 million. He essentially has zero value and the Braves easily won the surplus game in this trade.

I am less down on Allard than a lot of folks in here and some of the analytics boards. I always wondered about drafting him in the first place given his back issues, but he did well in the low minors. I still throw out Kyle Hendricks as an example of a guy who throws sub-90 and succeeds. Granted, he has pinpoint control that Allard doesn't seem to have at this point. But most of all, Allard is only 21 and was rushed to the bigs last year in what I thought was a totally misguided move. He has some time. The hill may be steep for him, but I still think he can become a back-end starter in the major leagues.

As for Martin's contract, I remember something similar to Danys Baez' contract when he was with the Braves. Rules have changed and I believe the big difference is that the Braves got a draft pick for him when he signed with the Orioles during the 2006-07 off-season.

A lot of guys can get buy on a questionable fastball but can’t say that Allard showed the qualities that sustain that.

and to be fair, some guys develop that pinpoint control later on. Allard is young and always has been for his level and has shown good control, so it could develop. i just think he's probably a guy that, if he's good at all, it will be years from now when he "re-invents" himself or finds something a little different somehow. he still has talent tho.

Again, he's all of 21 (22 in two weeks). I want to be clear I don't see trading him as a mistake, but I think he is going to hang around in the big leagues for awhile at some point and perhaps develop into a decent back-end starter.

Allard's behind Wilson, Wright, Anderson, Muller, Touki, Vodnik, Ynoa, Davidson, Cruz, etc. Wentz arguably is too. Both were expendable.

I'm discussing Allard more than the trade too. I just think everything looked so average that it is going to be tough for him.

I have always agreed with the idea that just looking at velocity is a bit overblown, but just didn't see how Allard was going to get it done. I guess he has a long time yet to try and find some answers.

His dominance through the minors is actually something that gives me pause on all the Braves' pitching prospects.

I wasn't bemoaning the trade. I'm just saying that he's still got a shot. It wasn't going to happen in Atlanta.

I almost wonder if someone in the FO screwed up and they thought Martin had more team control.

4:36 Just to clarify, Chris Martin is indeed a FA this offseason right?

    4:36 He is, yes.
4:37 He's been good for the Braves, and Allard's ceiling is rather limited, but I still am surprised they gave him up for a half season of Martin.

I doubt it. If he had any future with us I think he would have gotten a chance sometime this year. I think it was partially about clearing a 40 man roster spot knowing a roster crunch is coming.

Either that or the FO is really, really down on Allard.
