This is the kind of extension for pitchers I do not agree with.

It is so incredibly risky to do. The reward is almost never worth the risk

Really surprising the Yankees let Girardi go. Wonder what was wrong.

He just turned in a 4 win season (b-WAR). There is risk he blows out his elbow in spring training and never pitches again. But there is some upside. If he is a 3, 3, 3 and 2 win pitcher over the next four years, they save some coin relative to what he would have cost via arbitration and also in that first post-arb season.

Likely cements Jace's spot for 2018 - possibly increases the chance that Santana returns as well.

I understand that. But we have a glaring need at pitching coach. We should have been all over trying to bring him in. And with all the pitching coming up, it has to be enticing

to let a guy like Maddux go without even a look is a crying shame for a team built on the Braves way of pitching.

Funny thing - there's no evidence that the Braves didn't contact him or his people before St. Louis hired him.

Before taking shots at the organization for not hiring people that are available/become available over the next week or so, ask yourself a question - if you were reading all the reports that the situation is a mess and the team is in danger of losing prospects/draft picks and possibly getting other penalties, would YOU be unbelievably excited about coming here right now???

Pro ballplayers/coaches/managers should never have these.

Well I'd say it's pretty safe to say that we didn't pursue any of the talented pitching coaches available as we already made the announcement weeks ago that Chucky was going to be retained as pitching coach all the while he discarded lifers and good baseball guys in Perez and TP.

Just like every other team, I'm sure this organization is open to adjusting course on the fly IF the right situation presented itself with some of the big names that have been tossed around. Given the position we're in, I can't imagine any of those big names would even consider the thought of coming here right now - and I certainly can't say I blame them for not doing so. Just a guess, but if the Braves are considering replacing Snitker or Hernandez as early as next year, they're likely going to need to target "up-and-comers" that haven't yet been given their shot like Gabe Kapler, DeMarlo Hale, Sandy Alomar, Tim Wallach, Alan Mills, Stan Boroski, Darren Holmes, or Ricky Bones.

This. Plus, with Hart under investigation (and unable to so much as hire a GM) there’s no chaperone at the dance. No captain at the helm.

Nats are likely to hire Dave Martinez as their next manager and take another target the Braves should have gone after.

Interesting note (that we all already knew about) coming from MLBTraderumors.com

"Earlier this week, the Yankees announced that Joe Girardi will not return to manage the Bombers next season. But as Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated points out, 53-year-old Girardi might not have lost the job due to the team’s performance or his body of work. The three oldest managers in baseball (Terry Collins, Dusty Baker and Pete Mackanin) all lost their jobs this season, and John Farrell (55) will be replaced by the 42-year-old Alex Cora. This points to a trend in baseball wherein the game is being run by younger players, and it might just be that the ability of younger managers to connect with those youthful stars is being seen as a major asset. Fluency in analytics is also becoming increasingly vital to the manager position. As Verducci also points out, World Series skippers Dave Roberts (45) and A.J. Hinch (43) both fit the bill for this type of “modern manager”. With Girardi lacking the youth and analytic mindset required for the new mold, the Yankees may have simply decided he is no longer relevant in today’s game."
