You guys do realize that the tariff is on imported solar panels, right?
I think the confusion stems from this article's emphasis on Tesla and solar cells. It's the 30% on fully assembled solar panels that is going to have immediate impact (which was, best I know, conceived to protect a couple of struggling manufacturers from being pushed under by cheaper imports).
The solar and washer tariffs are dumb and anti capitalism.
Glad to see our leftist friends support capitalism now

I don't know that I'm well-versed enough to really get my head around it, but at first blush I'd say that sacrificing broader adoption of sustainable energy for debatable benefits to the domestic industry is a bad deal. The industry lobby contends that this will hurt the industry at large, nominally in defense of a couple of struggling manufacturers. And that it will surely be nixed by WTO.

America is literally at the inception stage of solar tech. China is at the large-scale, mass production stage. Their product is extremely affordable, decently reliable, and has the potential to suffocate the US domestic market.
Solar-panel installer is expected to be the fastest growing occupation in the United States over the next 10 years.
Would be nice if those panels were American made.
If a (truly paltry) 30% tariff is imposed on imported (Chinese) panels for a few years to advantage struggling manufacturers stateside and correct a glaring market imbalance then that's an objective that should be incredibly easy to support. It's a tact that the Europeans have taken too -- but *gasp* because it feels so good.
The more appropriate aspect of all of this bitch about here is why the solar hasn't received the kind of government love here that it has, for decades, in China.
China. ****ing China, people.
Something something Solyndra.
My grandfather installed a solar array on his home in the 80s. When he passed away a few years ago we had to get taken down because he was the only one who knew how to operate it and the company that sold it shuttered its solar division before I was born.
That's sad.
