We may have gotten Alvarez off the scrap pile, but he's been really good...

    3.00 era 15.0 ip 28 k 1.07 whip

    He's only 27, so I think he's a nice player

Plus we have gotten some very good bullpen arms that way and having worst record gives you first line at doing so. So we should have a better shot at grabbing the best. EOF was a great waiver wire pick-up back in the day and before being run in the ground here a great reliever. Not so much now of course. Further, I think we saw Alvarez as a trade piece either way with Minter and others on the way.

yup and California league hitting stats tend to have a big fudge factor. dont share the consensus this was a great deal. Alvarez is pretty special imo.

Nobody would want him if he wasn't a nice player. The Braves got great value here.

Callis said Demeritte would've been #9 in the updated rankings for Texas.

No, he's ranked 20th in the Rangers system though that presumably was before the season began. I don't see him as on of the better prospects in the system, but getting a guy who is a legit prospect who might turn into a good MLB for two guys you picked off the scrap heap and honestly have limited value even for the Braves...that's not bad.

If nothing else, he might be an asset to move for something else.

I'm not big on low average K artists, but this is certainly a very very good trade for Atlanta.

So I am assuming that with 2 guys being traded off the major league roster, there will be 2 positions to fill and we will play short handed tonight.....

    Who replaces them?

Maybe, but he was released by one team this year and the clock could strike midnight at any time.

With the Braves being very bad, it makes sense to move a reliever. Good deal.

Of course, we have a ton of arms that could replace him with equal if not better production.

Jim Callis just mentioned he was going to have Demeritte 9th on his Rangers midseason top 30.

Not to mention we got these guys off the scrap heap
I don't know that I'd say "far away." Both seem to have similar timelines around mid 2018.

Fair point, plus I admit that since this kid went to my highschool I've liked him for a while and wished him well. I understand the argument and it seems clear Texas had concerns about all the swing and miss in his game and that's why everyone knew he was available and going in one of the deals they made (if not to Atlanta to another team for pitching). But regardless he's still a solid prospect with good power potential and hopefully he does well here. Further, I liked Alvarez a lot too and if you recall before we got him I alluded to the need for us to make use of having the worst record and claiming any potentially good bullpen arms, etc., that hits the wire. It helps having that first shot as the obvious mistakes some teams make get claimed by teams with the worst records. We did that here and potentially landed another long-term gem a la EOF. But we also have other top notch lefties coming and near the Majors so you knew that at least one of Alvarez or Cervenka would go. I just hope not both as I like Cervenka a lot too. Houston among others have asked about him too.

That said, I did call this a great trade but I can see your argument too. One thing I don't like it how some are arguing it's a great deal because of how we got the players. That is a stupid argument, how you got a player says nothing about what the player is doing now. If we go simply by that nonsense then had we traded EOF after picking him up on waivers we'd been smart instead of complete morons.

The Braves will likely put him with a seasoned hitting coach. Considering Callis calling his big bump, here is Badler's Q&A from January.

Pete (Jackson Co.): Is Travis Demeritte still in the top-30? I'm sure he's fallen, but still has some pretty sick athleticism and tools, right?
Ben Badler: He stuck around toward the back of the list, but his stock tumbled. The athleticism, bat speed and raw power are still there, but way too much chasing and swing-and-miss in the zone even against bad pitching. The Rangers hitting coaches have done a great job of taking raw, tooled up players and making them more polished hitters, so there’s at least hope he can follow that path in time.

I'd like to see another package deal for an OF prospect. I can see Withrow being in a package deal with a guy like Beckham or Krol

Yah I think we are done with the bullpen/reliever prospect trades. I think if we see anymore trades, they will be package deals for raw position players with real talent but not yet on the big lists.

Not disagreeing per se about the California league but the next closest HR leads has 16? That says the power may be real. This is a very good trade if only for the gamble of power potential.
