Thanks for doing these, Rico -- especially now with how good (and important) our minor league system is. Your work has not gone unnoticed.

On another note, I'm interested to see what's going on with Toussaint. His peripherals aren't bad at all, but his ERA and W/L record is horrible. Now I know how unimportant those indicators can be, but it's weird. He may be working on some stuff, I'd guess.

    Yes, thank you Rico!

I wonder if Juan Contreras is pitching this morning for the DSL Braves. He is our other ballyhooed 2016 pitching signee.

More just a lack of luck possibly combined with some lapses in command that is leaving balls over the plate. But it's doubtful it can be attributed to working on things - that would show up in his peripherals.

Austin Riley has been pretty streaky this year, and he's back to struggling lately. Last 10: 5-32, (.156), 12 K, 2 BB.

Demeritte update. Through 53 games and 225 PAs, the K rate is 24.4% and BB rate 10.2%. Hitting .264/.338/.498 with a 140 wRC+.

Small samples for both levels, but here are Acuna's numbers --

    High A (126 PAs): .287/.336/.478. K rate 31.7%, BB rate 6.3%.
    Double A (108 PAs): .381/.435/.598. K rate 23.1%, BB rate 9.3%.

Is any of that improvement just "getting healthy or knocking the rust off after a lost year last season?

He's been really good, crazy that Coppy was able to pull him for basically nothing.

He's got a chance to be an actual major league piece for us, .250ish type hitter with good defense/speed, loads of Ks and lots of power. That'll play just fine at 3rd especially while he's cheap.

Most of it is Acuna being a very talented guy who is currently in the midst of an absurdly lucky streak with a .500+ BABIP.

He has essentially traded walks for hits.

The homer in me wants to think he is focusing on not walking guys and throwing too many pitches right down the middle. Walks are down (throwing more strikes), hits are up (strikes in the middle of the plate get hit harder), Ks are still good (stuff is still elite), so that theory at least makes some sense.

But his Ks aren't just still good, they are way up. So if he was just trying to focus on not walking guys and throwing hittable pitches, it would follow that he likely wouldn't be striking out as many guys. Even with great stuff, if you're throwing it over the heart of the plate enough to get hit hard, you're also likely not making a lot of guys miss.

His BABIP against of .345 and LOB% of just over 50% point to the fact that he has simply been pretty unlucky. The hits allowed shouldn't just be dismissed, but when your numbers are up across the board except for hits and runs allowed, I'm inclined to think you've primarily experienced bad luck.

I know there's been investigation into the kinds of pitchers (mostly good sinkerballers) who consistently outperform their peripherals; but has anyone looked into whether certain types of pitchers consistently under-perform relative to their peripherals? I'm not speculating Toussaint falls into the later category (if it is even empirically valid), I'm just wondering, given the subject.

I don't know, that would be interesting to see. FWIW, Touki outpitched his peripherals last year.

Braves prospect Travis Demeritte went 1-for-3 with a homer on Sunday for Double-A Mississippi.

It's the third homer in the last two games for Demeritte, and the tenth overall on the 2017 season. Acquired for a song near the deadline from Texas, Demeritte has easy plus power, and the hit tool has taken positive steps forward since joining the Atlanta organization. Add in quality defense at second base, and you have yourself a very good real -- and fantasy -- prospect.

    From Rotoworld.

Likely our fastest rising hitter not named Ronald this season.
