8/22/2015 SATURDAY MINORS FINAL .... Wilson Takes Over GCL HR lead

For those late to the party, Isranel Wilson is a 6-3, 185, lefty hitting 17 year old who has emerged as the best power bat in the GCL. He now has nine homers out of only 28 total hits. He doesn't turn 18 until March. Don't know what kind of OF he is; I'd guess he's a tall one.

For the Month of August, Isranel is hitting .271/.407/.563 with 4 HR and 2 2B in 59 PAs. His strike out percentage for August is down to 25%, with his walk percentage sitting at 17%.

He definitely has some swing and miss in him, but there is a lot of pop in that 185 lbs frame. As he gets stronger and bigger, his power should get even better.

Success in the GCL as a 17 year old is a fairly significant indicator. The fact that we have so many doing this during the current season should not blind us to the fact that over the years there have not been too many 17 year olds do well at this level (Andruw, Heyward and Freeman come to mind). And most of the ones who have succeeded at that level at that age have gone on to do very well. Not all have turned into superstars. But most have gone on to significant major league careers.

GCL Braves have team lead in league HR numbers, which is no surprise with Wilson and Riley on the squad. But Morales has 4 and Keller and Acuna each have 3. Acuna and Riley have since moved up. The thing that is perhaps most impressive is the Riley, Keller, and Acuna are 18 and Wilson is 17. Most of the other big HR guys in the GCL are over 20 and in at least their 2nd year of organized baseball. The Braves' guys are all either 2014 international signings or guys from the 2015 draft. A lot of Ks for some of those guys, but it also looks like there are some decent power ceilings as well.

Bethancourt could be brought up soon as next week, but Don't expect #Braves to call up many in September.Don't expect Mallex Smith, Jenkins

Andruw had more at bats in the Appalachian League than the GCL in his age 17 season. His numbers there: .336/.385/.448.

It is actually hard to think of a Braves prospect who did well in the GCL or Appy League as a 17 year old who ended up as a bust.

Andy Marte played in the Appy League as a 17 year old and his numbers were: .200/.306/.272. He then had four strong seasons--one each in low A, high A, AA and AAA. He was young at each of those levels. He remains the best of our hitting prospects not to make it.

rico43 What's your opinion on Carlos Castro? Seems to be a good catcher.

    Mallex 1-1, sb

    Bethancourt 1-1, rbi, throwing error

    Olivera 0-1

    Castro 1-1, rbi

Wonder if Castro will get the call in September. Wonder if he will get a shot to battle Peterson for 2b next season. Seems like a platoon between them should be considered
