The way Cuban stats translate, this guy probably projects as more of a 700 OPS hitter in MLB. His bat wouldn't play real well in LF, but I'd probably rather take a chance on him than sign Gomes. It might take more than Toscano money to get him, but not much more.
@JonHeymanCBS
Cuban CF Dayron Varona worked out before about 75 MLB scouts/execs in florida. .312/.376/..470/.847 lifetime. Good defender
He is supposed to be good defender in centerfield, at least from what I read. So yea if he doesn't cost too much I'd try to sign him.
Here's a short video of him working out today.

Sounds like we're on a collision course with Gomes. I can't imagine there's a better situation for him than the one we're willing to provide.
Gomes against LHP 2012 - 2014: 271 / 378 / 459. Not too shabby.
@mlbbowman
The #Braves are still pursuing Jonny Gomes. He's a potential option to platoon with Almonte in LF.

Bill Shanks is saying we have an OF signing that will be announced soon:
"Major league player who will likely come in on a minor league deal wit an invite to big league camp and have a great chance at making the team. Not trying to be coy here. Thought it would be announced today. Have just been asked to hold off for now. Left-handed hitter."
Thank the good Lord that rules out Gomes. But who?

Looking at remaining OF FA's, it would have to be one of Ryan Ludwick, Nate Schierholz, Rual Ibanez, Eric Young Jr, Ichiro, or Nyjer Morgan.
I listed them in order of likelihood. So I would imagine we'll be watching lots of Ryan Ludwick suckitude this yr.
Personally I'd rather have Gomes in some sort of platoon. Gomes is like Gattis-lite with the bat. Plays about 100 games a yr with a good amount of pop and kills LHP.

If it's a LHH and platoon partner for Gomes, that rules out EY Jr. who's a switch hitter and given Nate's splits makes him a poor choice. KJ would get a Major league deal I'd think. So maybe it's Endy Chavez as he's a lefty who hit over .300 vs righties last year.
That said, I rather go with what we have in-house than sign Gomes for lefties and possibly Endy Chavez for righties. If we don't give Joey T, Hunter and co. a chance now, when? I rather see what they have to offer than go with declining veterans in a platoon. Plus it seems like a poor attempt to "appear" competitive to me.

Appears you are correct. I could have sworn he was a lefty. May be him throwing left handed mixed me up.
Just remove him from the list then. Either way, it looks pretty bleak, aside from may be Ichiro. But I doubt we sign Ichiro and I seriously doubt he accepts a minor league deal with a ST invite.
Would YOU sign a minor league deal with a ST invite?
