Narducci is right. It's got to be tough to be a Phils fan now. Every objective baseball person who looked at them had to see this coming. Somebody ought to take the keys away from Ruben before he kills someone.

They have some young talent, mainly bullpen and some position spots.

Otherwise, they need to blow it up and rebuild as soon as possible.

Will it happen though, that remains to be seen.

Amaro attacked this offseason like they didnt need to rebuild.

They're fools for not unloading their moveable contracts like Lee and Hamels.

It seems to me that rebuilding can mean very different things depending on how good a team's scouting and development system is. A team with good scouts and minor league coaches can reload quickly. But we've seen other teams spend years and years in the wilderness. Without a good scouting and development system the only way up is to accumulate very high draft picks over a four or five year period, or even longer in some cases. It is a very difficult choice for a team like the Phillies. I actually don't think the approach the Astros and Cubs are taking is necessarily the way to go. Every season is precious, and to actually plan on being bad for five years is a tough thing to sell.

Farm system has great importance in MLB, even with big market clubs being able to sign every FA. You still need to fill in blanks with prospects that have come through the system. The Phils held out 1-2 years too long trying to win a title. There farm system wasn't great to begin with, but when you make these trades, you are doomed.

    Halladay for Drabek/D'Arnaud

Pence for Cosart, Singleton, Zeid, Santana (as a PTBNL, which rumors are that Santana was mistakenly included)

    Oswalt for Happ, Villar, Gose

You have to look in the mirror at times and realize when your team cannot compete for the top spot in baseball. Giving Howard that contract was massively dumb, but so was hanging on to players in their low to mid-30s without adequately planning for their demise.

That Pence trade looks like a killer.

Compare with what we gave up for Bourn around the same time.

I like J.P. Crawford. Asche is a decent player. Cesar Hernandez could be a decent utility guy.
But other than that, they're pretty empty. Franco hasn't done anything this year and he was their top prospect coming in. They're also thin in any kind of pitching depth in the minors. They have a good decent arms but Nola instantly becomes their best. They will have money to spend but have some contracts for the next few years that will hurt. Howard has a few, Utley has a few, Rollins has the 1, Lee, Hamels, Paps, Byrd, Ruiz. They're paying Burnett and Adams a lot this year. I think their future is pretty damn bleak, because there's so little anywhere in the minors.
Some of their fans thought for a little bit that they could compete in the division. They were nuts for thinking that. Watching that team play, it's obvious they just don't have anything. They had a solid run but RAJ has run them in to the ground a bit.

What has happened to Dom Brown? I remember the great debates of best OF prospect: Heyward, Brown, or Staunton. Brown has fallen quite a bit behind

He had that monster power month last year, but he's a bench player. He can't hit at all and is a terrible defender, even in LF. I mean a really, really bad defender.

They've had a good run but pretty clear they should tear it up, RAJ doesnt think that though.

I think it was 2 years ago they were out of it, they traded no one for anything, getting no prospects back.

Never would happen, i'd kill to get Hamels as a Brave.

Revere is 26 and is a 1 tool player, can't field, can't hit; has speed.

    Dom Brown? Serious?

Asche....maybe. Every team has a few higher potential position players than him.

The fact that the other four teams in the division have a lot of young talent just compounds things for the Phillies.

I saw a lot of Span and Revere in Minnesota and I could never figure out why some thought Revere was ever better than Span. I only saw the highlights of yesterday's game and I thought Revere really misplayed Upton's triple. Revere is, like you say, a guy's whose speed is a cosmetic for his obvious flaws.

Revere seems to be in the proud Roger Cedeno tradition of guys who are so fast you just sort of assume they're able to play center field at a decent level as a result of raw speed, and then you actually watch them....

The Phillies, if run competently, are a dangerous organization. New(ish) stadium that can draw gobs of fans for a competitive club, huge television contract, big money. When Amaro says that he doesn't think he's in the right market for a long-term re-build, I don't think he's wrong. In fact, there's probably an argument that the Phillies should never be in a position where they're looking at a string of really bad years.

And yet Amaro has put them there somehow.

Speed, for what ever reason, is a tool that people absolutely fall in love with. I guess it dazzles you and you can't get it out of your mind.

If people feel for power like they feel for speed, Hessman would have been a superstar.
