Wren seems to like to resign/extend. I guess alot depends on how the second half of the year goes. But I bet we make the qualifying offer to Santana, resign Harang to a two year deal, and resign Medlen and Beachy to incentive based deals. That leaves Hale still the 6th starter but I bet he'd get more starts than this year.

Sims is penciled in for needing a Tommy John in late September.

Why the Hale not? Wren will bank on Medlen and Beachy returning so Hale could be the #3 by May.

Anybody counting on Medlen and Beachy to be mainstays in the rotation next year is delusional. You just can't count on it. They have to be Plan B at most.

Gonna be another busy off season for Wren.

Wren did the exact same thing this year with Beachy and Floyd. Hope he learned from that, but he did it once...

There is a big difference between pitchers coming back from their first TJ and pitchers coming back from their second TJ surgery poo nly 1-2 years removed from the first. Two TJ surgeries are okay if they are 10 years apart, no one I can think of has come back from a second TJ surgery that happened as close as Beachy and Medlen. In fact they might not even come back as starters because of it.

Don't worry about next year. Frank says we can just trade Simms and Parsons for Huddy back in the offseason

we can resign Beachy pretty cheap for 2015, not so for Medlen who would have to get close to what he's got now, not a smart move for someone coming off TJ #2. Don't count on either one being rotation worthy.

Next question: should Hale be our #5 starter this year? Everyone except Teheran has issues this year, especially Minor.

    2014 xFIP numbers

    Santana 3.22
    Teheran 3.57
    Wood 2.98
    Minor 3.47
    Harang 3.92
    Hale 4.75

I believe those numbers provide an answer to your question. Though to be sure Hale's numbers include some games where Fredi used him for too many innings on too little rest. I could see a case for Hale over Harang who has been skating on thin ice. Not over the other four however.

Lol at any rotation moving forward that has Medlen and or Beachy in it. When will you understand that they are done.

Julio, Minor, and Alex are all in the rotation moving forward. One of the young talented prospects or Hale will be probably be another one. So that is 4 starters. We need some sort of veteran guy to complete the starting five. Chances are very slim that Ervin Santana plays for is next season. Ideally he would have has an awesome year and we signed him for a few more years. That would have been my plan. I am guessing we go the route of an elder statesmen in free agency to complete the rotation.

I wonder if the Braves will think outside the box and consider converting someone who has mainly relieved to a starter. Simmons, Avilan and Thomas all have three-pitch arsenals. Avilan and Thomas both have some experience as starters in the minors.

I think we will sign a mid-tier FA pitcher.

I'm not counting on either Medlen or Beachy.

I like Hale, but I don't think the guys we have in AAA now are anything more than back-end of the rotation guys.

I'm guessing Santana is given a QO this offseason, and there is a distinct possibility he takes it. If he does accept it he's obviously in the rotation. If he doesn't accept it Wren will take the pick and go sign someone else.

Expect Wren to do what Wren always does: gather as many options as possible on a budget. He will sign a FA guy (or Santana) that can slot right into the middle of the rotation, bring in a scrap heap starter like Harang or Garcia that he can hide in AAA if needed, bring back the injured guy(s) on the cheap as insurance policies that will be ready a couple months into the season, and let the young guys in the minors also throw their hat in the ring and see if any of them earns a spot.

Unless he can squeeze his ERA under 4.50, I'm guessing not. He sure ain't worth $14m. Strikes me as none too bright, unlike our usual homegrown guys. He's been too inconsistent throughout his career and this year for a guy with an electric arm.

It will be interesting how professional evaluators view Santana's 2014 season. The ERA is up but the FIP and xFIP are down.

    .
It is highly unlikely he accepts a QO. Maybe he declines and later on signs for the QO amount. If he is good enough to get a QO then he will test FA. He desperately wants a big long term contract. That was a big reason he chose the braves over Jays. He was gambling that he could have another strong season in a lighter hitting league with 2 elite defenders with a good chance to pitch in the playoffs.
