Finally, someone who is actually involved in the education system joins in. I've never been a classroom teacher, but I've been involved in education funding/policy issues for 30 years and I'll let folks throw two-dimensional charts and graphs out there that portray our educational system as being totally decrepit and sit back and laugh.

Three things to remember: (1) a lot of the high-performing countries have national curricula where textbooks and content are far more tightly governed than in the United States (try that one here), (2) the social safety net and access to high-quality early childhood health and education services is higher in a number of the countries that out-perform the United States on test scores and that creates a more equitable starting line for most students, and (3) in a number of the high-performing countries, there is much more ethnic homogeneity that creates learning environments where expectations are similar and barriers to learning are lower.

For a better and more accurate description of what I have presented, here's a link to Rutgers' education professor Dr. Bruce Baker's School Finance 101 blog: https://schoolfinance101.wordpress.com/

Thanks Fitty, actually I have tried to contributed to these teacher/education oriented discussions before but I have found that not that many people on here really care to hear what I had to say, unless of course it went along with the narrative they have adopted. I also posted a pretty long post yesterday about the whole thing, at least from my experience and perspective. As you stated there are some places with more of a national curriculum, but that will never happen here, at least not without another civil war, IMO. Seeing how we as a nation can't even agree on what constitutes "the truth" on anything it's unlikely we can agree on the material we teach our kids. I can tell you that a couple of our elected officials here at the state level in this extremely RED state have made Yuge horse's asses of themselves over the past couple of days. I'll try and post some videos of it if I can still find them.

Wow, small world! That's where I was born, went to college, did my student teaching, and so on. How long have you lived there? By the way, the casino is actually closer to Calera isn't it?

About 8 years now. And yeah I always thought that to be weird since it's so close to Calera but the actual city limits of Durant end right with the Casino now.

So, is Calera still a speed trap? It was when I lived there though they never bothered me. They probably took one look at what I was driving, chuckled a bit, and then moved on to some other vehicle that looked like it had a driver that might be able to pay a ticket if they gave them one. lol

The Kansas Supreme Court declared in October that the state’s current funding of more than $4 billion a year is insufficient for lawmakers to fulfill their duty under the state constitution to finance a suitable education for every child.

If giving people money equals support then I support the hell of single mom's at the strip club. Maybe these teachers should look to provide a valuable service instead of asking to be paid to indoctrinate our kids with their political ideology. No one needs a computer or a ****load of money to learn how to read, write, and do basic math. Beyond that they don't teach jack**** of value in schools. The problems they run at government efficiency levels instead of free marker levels. They don't have to worry about reducing expenses, just whine for more money.

cajun this doesn't really sound like you, though I do recognize the tone. I realize there are problems and weak points in our educational system. I've never argued that, but I do think it's rather ironic that so many people who don't think that the teachers in OK have a valid point about being paid so little, and disrespected so much. After all if you or anyone else here can read this message you should be thanking a teacher instead of dissing them. As for the types of education you're talking about, the most basic read/write/math stuff, the top 5%-10% love that sort of thing, it's called "Vo-Tech Education". People who have that level and type of education know how to do their jobs, but they can't really think for themselves when it comes to things like politics. After all in 1933 Germany was perhaps "the best trained" population on Earth, yet they couldn't fall for Hitler's line of bull fast enough. This is also why so many in this country congregate to the far left or the far right. "Hey it sounds good, it must be true". Also, for ANYONE who doesn't think teachers (generally speaking) do a thankless job for pretty much thankless wages, here's my message, TRY IT for a while. Come on in, OK has ran off so many teachers that they're certifying people who have not completed, or in many cases even started, a degree in education. Come on in, give it a shot, get some REAL education in what it's like to be a teacher. It's SO easy, why not do it. You could just do it as your "side hustle" while you spend most of your time on your important jobs. So, what are you all waiting for?

By the way, here's a good message from a high school student from Cache, OK Public Schools, made a little less than a month ago, and about 3 weeks or so before the teacher walk out. See if it sounds reasonable, appropriate, and absolutely true to you all.

But despite such conditions, Oklahoma’s teachers are getting no sympathy from Republican Gov. Mary Fallin, who compared them to “a teenage kid that wants a better car.” And she is hardly alone when it comes to Republicans who undervalue public education.

Yeah, "Mattress Mary" doesn't like public school teachers, and the State senator from down in my part of the state who won back in 2016 by pointing out that his opponent used the same marketing firm as Hillary Clinton (seriously that's what put him over the top) also accused teachers of "extortion" among other things. Also, rumor has it that MM tacked on an arch and reflecting pool onto that legislation but it's difficult for anyone to prove it since MM also sign legislation that prevents the details of much legislation to be made public. Check out former US Senator Tom Coburn (from her own party) who blasted her for it. Yes, OK voters are THAT effing stupid.

Okie, I am thinking of doing Adjunct work. 28 an hour. How is that type of work? Make a few hundred a month is not a bad thing teaching kids.

    just like the Democrats.

They are the same, you just vouch for one side.

Democrats are doing not one damn thing for our race and our lack of education. That fat cats making 100k a year in Chicago Public schools only go to collect a fat check yet our grad rate sucks and a breeding ground for gang bangers but we won't see that in the news. They need those votes and keeping us dumber helps them.

You are useless you know, you Democrat hack.
