Guy pitched to a mid 3 era last year and was a back end option for the Cubs. Could we use a guy like him at the point with the woes we have had so far? Wouldn't cost too much I wouldn't think.

I'm not going to freak out over the pen right now. I think Hale is going to be a solid addition when Minor is ready to go. Carpenter/Walden have looked good IMO and I am not going to freak out over Avilans start this year just yet.

I imagine that after going over budget with Santana we have very limited funds for mid-season acquisitions. Also I think it is a bit early to say the pen is the area we should spend what limited funds we have. I'm hoping by the end of the season to have a pen that looks like this: Kimbrel, Walden, Carpenter, Hale, Venters, Avilan, Thomas.
It is unclear that replacing one of those guys with Gregg would give us much of a boost if any. Gregg's FIP numbers the past 3 seasons: 4.89, 5.04, 4.10. His xFIP numbers: 4.86, 4.80. 4.38. Color me unimpressed.
If Arizona continues its slide, I'd definitely like to see us take a look at Brad Ziegler. I've always liked that guy, even if the K numbers are so unimpressive.
If Braves have insurance on Medlen and Beachy, should be fine fiscally at mid season. JS seemed to infer that would be back on budget soon.
Speaking of the Cubs, Epstein's boy genius thing seems to be taking a bit of a hit. I looked at that line-up the other day and they don't look very good. Castro will get better, Bonifacio will get worse, and Rizzo is the only guy really doing anything. The pitching situation looks better, but the Cubs could be this year's Astros.
Don't they have a ton of IF bats coming?

For their sake, I hope so. That has to be one of the more anemic looking line-ups in baseball right now.
The Cubs and Astros have been held up by some as examples of how to rebuild and the Phillies have been held up as an example of how to perpetuate mediocrity. I'm not sure I like either approach. Maybe I'm spoiled as a Braves fan but it seems to me the ideal is to reload without too many years in the wilderness.
I basically agree, I don't believe he'd be an upgrade to what we already have. I'd rather keep Varvaro than pick-up Gregg and I don't think a lot of him either. In other words, I hope to see him replaced but with a list like yours (not one that includes Gregg).

It wouldn't surprise me to see the Braves continue to make under the radar signings (eg. Clay Schrader two days ago) as insurance policies and hope that Venters + whoever gets relocated to the pin after Minor/Floyd return provides enough of a bolster to the bullpen to alleviate the need to acquire arms from outside of the organization. I think the team dipped fairly deep into discretionary funds to sign Santana (which has been well worth it) and are clutching the purse strings rather tightly at the moment. Of course, that could all change as the season progresses.

Kris Bryant, No. 1 pick last year, is in AA and all seem to agree he's the best power bat in the minors.
I think the difference will be the Cubs will probably be able to develop and keep the kids they develop. I don't know if the Astros are ever going to have enough wallet to escape having the jettison guys as the hit their payday years. That's always been the Royals' problem.

You don't think Hale is better stretched out at Gwinnett on the slim and unlikely event we have an injury?
Carpenter has been anything but awesome this yr. He's pitched better his last 3 outings, but he has given up at least 1 run in 4 of his 10 appearances so far and his bit hit pretty hard as well.
Hopefully these last 3 appearances are signs of better things, cause I haven't had had much faith in him so far this yr.
