Don't want to "go negative" but it is process of elimination. We all hope for a comeback from Medlen. So, hopefully, that leads to release of Collmenter. Quite a few of the pitchers will obviously end up in the minor league camp for reassignment. See d'Arnoud and Rio Ruiz going back to Gwinnett. Why even bother with Recker? Not even familiar with Adam Walker. Would expect that they'll want veteran 4th OF/PH types to round that out. Hence, the interest in Frenchy.

^^ They've said all along they plan on using a 8-man bullpen like much of last year. Definitely plan to break camp like that.

Yes. My guess is they go with 2 lefties. Krol and Paco Rodriguez if he is healthy and reasonably effective in spring training. If he is not there is an opening for someone currently not on the 40-man roster.

Among the righties I think Johnson, Viz, Cabrera have spots barring injury or really poor performance. Winkler if healthy should make the team. We lose him back to the Rockies if he isn't on the team or on the DL. Colmenter and Ramirez are probably the favorites for the last two spots but could lose out if they pitch poorly.

Could use John Danks as a LHP long reliever if he pitches okay in ST......but we won't be using our 5th pitcher for a while at the start of the season right? So Folty could go to the pen or AAA to make a start

With the players currently in hand the bench looks like this:

    Suzuki
    Micah Johnson
    D'Arnaud
    Bonifacio

With Sean Rodriguez and Jace Peterson sharing second.

This looks like a weak bench to me. Kelly Johnson and Jeff Francoeur would both offer better pinch hitting from the left side and right side respectively over the current in-house options.

Be careful what you wish for.

Although, given the quality of the guys we've netted from our annual Kelly flip, I'm surprised we haven't signed him already.

Danks will be in the mix. I'm a fan of giving starting pitchers a look as relievers once they've reached the end of their useful lives as starters. Joe Blanton is an example of what can happen.

All of those bench options other than SRod and Suzuki are super depressing. Actually, it's really all but SRod, but I have hope for Suzuki to be mediocre.

Yeah. Its a poor bench as things currently stand. Hopefully they upgrade.

Beginning of the actual moves. Adam Brett Walker outrighted off 40-man roster.

Jacob Lindgren, it has been announced, will go on 60-man DL when the season begins, freeing up another 40-man roster spot.

Jacob Lindgren...forgot about him. It's crazy how many former 1st and 2nd rounders with high ceilings we have assumed. We could have a ton on great options this year if guys like Paco and Winkler bounce back. 2018 depth should be unreal.

we still need a 4th OF. I'm thinking we have tryouts then trade a pen arm for one.

The closer we get to spring training, the more I think the 4th OF spot will go to Frenchy or Bonifacio to start the year

Who's playing first base when Freeman needs an off day? And who's playing first base if Freeman has to do a 15 day DL stint? Rodriguez was the only one capable that I see on the roster.

I think we make a trade or two this spring. We have an abundance of major league ready arms. If we can trade from a position of strength to acquire bench players that make us better in the first half and provide trade value come July then I think we do it.

I don't want to trade prospects to get a half year rental that we trade for prospects.
