If wren doesn't get a SP now he will be getting one come July when they cost way more.
Only if an injury happened, the Braves have a lot of depth in pitching.

    Meds/JT/MM are a pretty solid 1-2-3.

Like I said if Wren doesn't get a SP now then he will be come July when they cost twice as much.

Getting a SP is not going to kill your chances of extending players or fixing the bench.

Not really. You lose any of those top 3 and we will be in the same boat as we were this year.

No one in AAA is going to come up and give the innings that any of the top 3 would.

SP is a very big need.

So losing one of them and having 2 of them, Wood, Beachy, Hale is a huge downgrade?

Where Wren has to make a trade.

I wouldnt mind Lohse (depending on what we'd have to trade) or Hughes.

    Outside of that, meh.

So you think Hale is as good as Medlen, Teheran, or Minor?

A rotation that has Wood beachy and hale in it is just plan bad for a team wanting to win a WS.

So we basically have nearly 15 mil to spend this off-season, and there's almost no way we can spend it.

    Did i say that?

I think Hale could fill in for a few weeks or a month if one of them got hurt.

If you're talking season-ending, that could happen to any team!

    Well, we could spend it.

But what can we spend it on?

A SP thats maybe a marginal upgrade of the likely rotation targets.

A bullpen arm or two, and/or a bench bat.

If they were going to spend it, i'd like a high leverage BP arm like Mujica or Benoit.

    Meh.

In retrospect, we should have made the qualifying offer to Huddy. But I don't think anyone was making that argument at the time.

I think it is very possible that Huddy would have accepted the offer. I'm not sure the Giants would have made that offer knowing they would have to give up their 1st round pick in addition to $23MM. Are you saying we should have made the offer so we could have gained another supplemental pick, or that you would like to have Huddy for $14.1MM?

I assume Huddy would have taken the $14.1M. The issue with a lot of the pitching deals is the length and associated increase in risk. But even if he had not accepted the offer, the draft pick would be a nice bonus.

You would have been fine paying Hudson 14 million dollars!? Jesus. The man is not worth that kind of dough.

For one season? I could live with it since we weren't planning on making any aggressive moves anyways.

With McCann surely coming off the books, and maybe Huddy declines and still goes for the Giants deal anyways?

That's the idea. A one year deal keeps the budget situation flexible for 2015. There is more likely to be a crunch in 2015 than this year.

It is an overpay, but there is a positive tradeoff in the form of not having an obligation in 2015. I like what the Yankees have been able to do with bringing back Pettitte and Kuroda on one-year deals.

I liked Huddy, and your point is taken that it's only a one year thing. I dont' know. 14 mill just seems too much anyway.

You're high. Nobody else was going to pay that much and sacrifice a 1st rounder.

    Meh.
Then we need to line up this extensions with Simmons, Heyward, Freeman and front load the contracts a bit.
