Manfred let ego get involved in this. It wasn't an issue of business or the best interests of the game. Manfred is a sulky child who is mad that someone did something he didn't want them to do. What a superfluous human being.

No he didn't. We continuously broke the loosest rules in the game for multiple years - and did so while thumbing our nose at the Commissioner while he was trying to send the message to EVERYONE to clean their *hit up when he penalized Boston.

There's certainly a logic to the penalties, but I sincerely doubt you (or anyone else) can effectively argue the Braves "got off slightly lucky."

Losing a third round pick because someone joked about giving Waters a car? Banning someone for life? Preventing us from signing someone a couple years from now because we came to an early agreement, something everyone does?

I’m actually ok with that. Getting punished to 2021 with the offending party being banned for life seems excessive

The compensation is hobbling the Braves in future signings by either a ban for a time, reduction in bonus pool money, or both. The rest of the league gets a boost by not having the Braves to compete with.

The fact remains that there is now absolutely no incentive for teams to self-discipline or even cooperate with MLB's investigation. There's no reason for a team to hold the people breaking the rules accountable.

The NCAA learned long ago that the best way to keep things in line was to get teams to report themselves and discipline themselves. You do this by coming down ridiculously hard on teams that don't and going easy on teams that do.

By coming down super hard on the Braves who are the first team ever to fire their GM over this, MLB is sending the message that holding people accountable isn't important. If they had considered Coppy getting fired part of the punishment then maybe other GMs feel a bit less secure when flaunting the rules knowing they might be the next one thrown to the wolves.

The incentive is to deter cheating and the stick is that all contracts will be voided and you will be off the international market for the foreseeable future.

You don’t want to incentivize self reporting you want to incentivize not cheating.

Losing the players and Coppy being banned for life is sending a pretty big message. Going beyond that is really just punishing Braves fans. He should have put us on a 5 year probation or something. Hopefully MLB will rethink who is being punished here.

You possess evidence that the offer of a car to Waters was false?

Who gives a *hit if Coppy is banned for life? It's not like the organization was ever going to re-hire him.

If they have evidence (which they obviously do) that we came to an illegal agreement with a kid that can't be signed for another two years, we shouldn't be allowed to sign him.

Considering the number of teams that do the exact same stuff (and people around the league admit that everyone is doing this) and the fact that other teams that have been caught have been slapped on the wrist, I don't think there's any way that the Braves got lucky here.
