Really interesting conversation on Fangraphs with Spencer Strider about his pitches, his spin rates and a lot more: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/atlanta-...n-his-arsenal/.

Some notes - They're modeling his breaking ball after Luke Jackson's and calling it the "death pitch." He's punched out 44 in 24 innings this year without even throwing his changeup - they've got him throwing only fastball and the death pitch to get more reps on it. But he's comfortable with the change and has thrown it a lot before pro ball.

Would be an even better interview if we all fad the first clue about what all that *hit means!!!

    LOL
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

He doesn’t really know what spin axis is, since a perfectly backspun ball has a spin axis perpendicular to the velocity, but when he says “inside 1 o’clock” he means his spin is almost perfect backspin. He confuses spin axis with the direction of his magnus force vector, but he gets the idea of spin efficiency. A pitch sitting at 2400 rpm with nearly 100% spin efficiency is going to rise a good deal.

By “negative six” I expect he means -6” of downward break, which is very good for a hard breaking ball, and upper 80s qualifies as a hard breaking ball. A pitch like Fried’s curve that breaks 10” down is much slower.

His comments about the change are all the ways pitchers reduce spin on the pitch, which is what makes it sink.

The idea that a pitch needs time to break based on the height of release is pretty silly, but he does seem like a pretty sharp kid. I look forward to seeing data on his pitches.

Shewmake's having another good night. 2-2 with a HR and double.

Strider was dominant. Six innings, only one hit — a solo homer — and 12 K/1 BB.

“Death Pitch” is pretty metal, but still comes up a bit short for me.

This dude has a classic baseball name already, it literally rhymes with “slider,” and “Death Pitch” is the best they can do? It sounds like a Google Translate of a writeup of a Nippon Professional Baseball game.

Still think Strider might get used in the big club's pen in the second half - we know they're going to limit his innings no matter what, and the fact that they don't have him throwing the change AT ALL just screams that they think he can get hitters out one time through the order with two pitches.

Can't quite understand why Jesse Chavez isn't in the pen either - loads of experience, and after last night he's struck out 27 guys in 20 innings. Webb and Santana are better options, REALLY???

I think if Strider throws one pitch at the major league level this season, Anthopoulos will have officially failed the past off-season. Last thing I want to see is Joey Devine redux.

Strider well on his way to becoming our top pitching prospect by the end of the year (assuming Ynoa loses his eligibility).

Ynoa, after Mullering this over. I think you are Wright. That mother Tucker has been Cruzing. Tarnok to get excited about him.

I know the other guys are more advanced, but Strider looks legit. Devastating stuff and it's absolutely dominating the competition. He's also a college guy so he shouldn't need to much seasoning.
