Nola at 67 pitches through 6. Could go the distance, and i don't see the nats touching him.
he has a legitimate MVP claim.

Harper Ks to end the inning.
At least that late-inning stuff by the Nats means Nola probably isn't coming out for the 9th..which actually may be good or bad.

    Not really.

He's not even the best pitcher in the NL. He's got universally worse stats than De Grom and Scherzer.

I'm personally not a fan of giving MVP to a pitcher unless what they're doing is truly legendary. But if you were to give it to a SP it would certainly right now go to De Grom or Scherzer. Nola is arguably not even better than Corbin, though traditionalists would say he is.

He leads in pitching only bWAR which is the better WAR, IMO, for evaluating a season’s accomplishment.

fWAR is a little more fanciful.

I don’t mind awards having a team success element to them. Just to make it interesting.

I’d guess Carpenter has the edge for MVP at the moment.

i think adding in team element works unless someone is just leaps and bounds better on a bad team. that isn’t the case. and as south said, nola does lead in bWAR which one could argue is better for pitchers (considering it more measures what they’ve actually done).

the phillies wouldn’t be in the conversation without nola. every top player is obviously very valuable to their team, but he’s just been an absolute rock.

I consider all WAR to have flaws. rWAR punishes pitchers who concede runs because of their defense. fWAR attempts to remove defense from valuation. Downsides to both situations. Reality is Scherzer strikes out more, walks less, has the same ERA, despite Nola having an incredibly lucky HR/FB rate.

He’s in the ballpark with the other two.

If his performance ends up being instrumental to his team making playoffs or coming damned close I think that is something that could reasonably tip the thing in his direction.

“Luck” is interesting in predicting future performance but has very little place in evaluating what actually happened in my view. What happened, happened. No need to consider what should or could have happened.

We got a ways to go. I don’t think we have any definite leaders for MVPs or cya in the NL.

Matt Carpenter will probably steal MVP from Freeman.

this drives me nuts sometimes. yeah, maybe a players performance won't continue long-term. but what they did, they did. that was the actual result of their performance. saying it doesn't count as much because it was "lucky" is really stupid. it's great for long-term evaluating tho.
