Ok. The pick helps some. But I don't think it completely evens things out.

Encarnacion has a $5M buyout for next year. So it’s only a $25M take on for the M’s

Yes. They clear the money in 2019 as opposed to 2020 if they kept Santana. Still a bad deal.

Probably not, but the Dip****o likes to be aggressive at the expense of being intelligent. The Ms want to clear payroll in 2 years, so Santana has to go. Period. Teams seem to be lining up to take advantage of this fact.

The best part about this trade is I will now get to see if Diaz switching organizations brings about the launch angle change I’ve been advocating for years happens and pays off.

Given the Rays salary situation (nothing on the books until they signed Morton) and the perception that they're trying to contend this year, something like a Bauers/Brandon Lowe for Santana would've made a lot of sense for them to make a push for the next two years IMO. Adding Santana and Cruz to hit in the middle of their lineup and Morton to their rotation would really have made them interesting.

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

THIS makes more sense. Now they add Cruz, and they're really going to be a handful.

Still doesn't make sense for Cleveland IMO - they've added salary (over the two years) rather than subtracted it.

Sure would've liked to have gotten Alex Claudio instead of the Brewers getting him.

Here's a little more on Creasy although it's almost two years old. Looks like he missed all of 2017.

No I'm pretty sure that the Mariners are getting Edwin and a pick. Rays are getting Yandy, and Indians are getting Bauers and Carlos.

I saw an article posted from a Yankee fanboy basically saying the Yankees are right to be asking for a lot because Gray would be an "Ace" anywhere else. Lol, you can't make up that kind of dumb.

Which leads me back to wondering why it makes sense for Tampa (unless they think they can suddenly get Diaz hitting the ball in the air). They had plenty of financial flexibility to take on EE - especially for one year - and another big bat to help them give the big boys a run for their money this season.

so the indians traded Diaz and got Santana and Bauers. I think Bauers probably has more value than Diaz, leading me to believe the Indians took on Santana's salary to even it out a bit. which means when Seattle took on santana as an asset, that was...stupid.

Yankees fans are accustomed to the thinking the rest of MLB serves as their minor league affiliate.

Since the Yankees usually just buy whatever they want, and are now smarter the 80% of the other teams, that is pretty much the case.

This is the type of move that I really like. Find a player who excels at one or two things, but has a fixable problem holding him back. A smart organization identifies that, realizes other teams are undervaluing that asset, and then acquires that player with the thought of fixing him and getting a 3+ win player for cheap. Teams like the Dodgers and Red Sox do stuff like this a ton. Chris Taylor, Kike Hernandez, Max Muncy, Steve Pearce, Mitch Moreland... To one degree or another, those guys were all undervalued assets that just needed a smart organization to identify their problems and tap into their potential.

As a result, the Dodgers and the Red Sox have built incredibly deep offenses that have a lot of versatility. The Rays obviously won't be able to do it to the degree of those teams, but they can still acquire plenty of quality players for cheap like that. I kind of think that was the angle that AA was going for when he traded for Duvall and it just hasn't worked out yet. I bet he keeps working with Duvall to see if he can unlock a little extra out of him. But I expect moves similar to this from us in the future.

There was a few tweets suggesting Rays were getting Encarnacion as well, but this may clear that up:

The full trade is #Rays get Yandy Diaz and minor League Pitcher Cole Sulser from #Indians for Jake Bours and cash that goes to Seattle. Cleveland gets Santana from Seattle for Encarnacion. Encarnacion remains with #Mariners for now but #Rays quite interested

    Mariners:

    Edwin Encarnacion
    Draft Pick
    $$$

    Indians:

    Jake Bour
    Carlos Santana

    Rays:

    Yandi Diaz
    Cole Sulser
