I'm not sure what others think. I do know that people thinking this deal has any bearing on any players coming or not coming here during this past offseason are dumb. It does have bearing on the Braves being able to keep/sign other good players once Acuna was scheduled to become a FA since this is apparently below what we expect his market value to be at the time.

I still agree with Joe. No way Soto is youger than 35. I'd almost bet Julio Franco is younger.

The deal probably breaks down roughly as follows:

    2019 (21): $560k (pre-arb 2, no signing bonus reported)
    2020 (22): $1M (pre-arb 3)
    2021 (23): $5M (arb 1)
    2022 (24): $9M (arb 2)
    2023 (25): $13M (arb 3)
    2024 (26): $17M (arb 4)
    2025 (27): $23M (FA 1)
    2026 (28): $23M (FA 2)
    2027 (29): $17M option, $10M buyout (FA 3)
    2028 (30): $17M option, $10M buyout (FA 4)

I can't believe Acuna gave up 2 option years at the end of this deal, but it's great news for the Braves.

Acuna may now be the most valuable asset in all of MLB.

Would he be enough to get MadBum from the Giants?

In fact, this deal means we'll likely pay Acuna more than he would have made in 2020-2022, which are the years you'd be paying Kimbrel.

Whether you want to sign Kimbrel to a particularly contract is of course separate decision. His being old or expensive is independent question.

I do think having Acuna off the board helps them make decisions in many time frames including the relative short term. They know what they are going to pay him and they know they don't have to come up with anything else to get it done. And they have something of a baseline signing to help cram down other guys asks.

I wonder where he will rank in fangraphs best trade value list later this year? This certainly improves it.

I don't know. Acuna's arbitration and need to do an extension might well have had some impact on Braves willingness to go to three, four, five years on some guys.

If he stays healthy and is what most think he will be this will be an amazing deal. It’s like Chipper’s first extension but longer.

Andruw signed a great deal too. He even gave Boras the finger.

It's possible. But I also don't think they had any interest in signing players three plus years this past off season. Unless you count the bogus rumors of 3/90 to Harper and Machado.

Yeah but nobody valued defense that much then and Andruw smiled too much when he struck out.

Acuna doesn't smile when he strikes out.

Depends on how he plays. If he improves on last year, I would imagine he'll be #1.
"Acuna is getting lucky, just like CJ did when he batted .321 and won a batting title. He is unlikely to get lucky at the MLB level over an extended period of time. He will settle in around .300-.320 just like everyone else, and when he does, he won't be within shouting distance of the 1.000 OPS he is posting in AAA...more like low .700s in 2018." -Enscheff 8/25/17

Wow. I was hoping we would extend Acuna quick but this deal is pretty lopsided if he does what we all think he will. Excellent job by AA to get this done. Acuna’s agent will probably regret this deal in a few years.

If he puts up a 4-5 win season at age 21 he will be the #1 in trade value almost without question.
