Shanks talking about it now.
Slamming the deal. 23 million a year for defense?
Take your kids out with a glove, don't even need a bat, just a glove.
I have to agree with him that his defense isn't worth that much money.

Yeah. I can understand someones argument that runs saved isn't equal to runs created thus their WAR is skewed a bit. But even if Heyward was an average defender in right his offense and base running a lone makes him a 4 WAR player in 2015. That alone makes him deserving of this AAV. Some people just don't get the current state of baseball economics.
And it's not like Heyward is bad offensively. 121 wRC+ is good for RF and elite in CF.

Waiting on the, let's get him in 3 years when we're good posts.
agree.
It's not like he's bad on offense. He just isn't close to his hype. He's still a really good player.
Maybe he's just going to bet on himself like Revis did in the NFL. He's still got 180 plus million that his now. But he'll have opt outs and probably incentives where he'll make a lot more if he's healthy and plays like he has most of his career.
He's not Simmons in RF. He's a much better hitter.
Agree with all of this.
People like Shanks severely underrate the importance of just being a good all-around baseball player and not hurting your team or offering no value in any area. Either that, or they're still just irate that Heyward never became an absolute superstar, which is stupid.
Heyward is a good hitter (he is), a great baserunner, and an elite defensive player. Guess what? That's really valuable to a baseball team.
For all the flaws WAR may have, and regardless of what you think of it, its biggest asset is that it began to combine all facets of the game into one rating. Nothing is overlooked or ignored.
Glad he went to the Cubs.
Nats window is closing, they'll probably lose Strasburg next winter, and the Cards while still good dont have the pieces the Cubs do.
He's always raked in Chicago. Also a LOT less pressure that he wont be forced to carry the team offensively with guys like Rizzo, Schwarber, Bryant, maybe Soler all who are 30+ HR threats.
He can still opt out after 3 years. He landed in a good spot. I'm glad we didn't pay him 23+ mill a year. And I'm a huge jhey fan

What an absolute bargain.
So much for saying Heyward would go to the highest bidder. So much for saying he doesn't want to win. So much for saying we actually made a good effort to sign him.
Thank goodness we got that sweet trade for Shelby the other day.. can't imagine how I'd be feeling otherwise.
