Of the 3 BP arms the Braves acquired, this was easily the worst deal mainly due to the future salary owed.

Giants should be happy to have rid themselves of a stupid long term BP contract.

At least he going to throw a pitch for the Braves unlike O'Day.

In one sense it’s a near wash with O’day’s dead money, but there were hopes and dreams for those dollars.

    Not awesome...
Not awesome, but I’m holding out hope that there’s a good reason Anthopoulos targeted Melancon, and coveted him enough to take on that hefty chunk—though I’m sure one factor is that similar relievers were cost-prohibitive in other ways.

Which is why the “it’s not your money” argument makes zero sense. The Braves have significantly less to work with this offseason now.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a killer or anything but yeah there was some flexibility in getting that money off the books.

Or they don’t have less to work with, and McGuirk okayed this bump (after consulting Chip’s expertise).

I’m cynical, so I’m going to assume it’ll be a problem; but we can’t say that for sure, and there are Bowmans that payroll will continue to rise.

I seriously doubt AA made this move if it was going to greatly effect our plans for next year but we shall see.

Maybe AA just decided that next season they'll have significantly more salary space to deal with and he'd rather overpay in terms of salary for a decent reliever for next season rather than in prospect capital.
    thank you weso1!

Yeah i dont know if AA eats the whole deal if he knows it would hurt him from improving the team this winter.

It certainly will make for tougher choices. I don't think we can bring back Donaldson AND Keuchel (or a pitcher on equivalent salary). We may open up some flexibility by dropping Teheran and Gausman.

McGuirk indicated a few months ago 2020 would see an increase. But nothing major. More incremental than anything else.

Unless Gausman has a monster 2nd half, he's probably non-tendered.

Julio will be interesting to see what happens. He's gotten shelled a bit, but he's also came up big when we needed him.

Giants should send us a 40 fv to take on that money. With a no trade clause...that’s bad.

Guy will be in our top 5 highest paid players. Best case is he’s a good 7th inning guy.

I think one but not both will be brought back. And lately its been looking like Julion.

They must be banking on the ground ball rate.

Melancon has been good lately, but taking back the whole contract isnt ideal.

To be fair, it’s not really a long term deal any more. I agree otherwise.

It's a bad deal but we need pen help. I can't understand how Dyson cost three prospects not in the Twins top 30, but Melancon required Beck and we had to take on the entire contract. It's not my money, but I don't understand that. Having said that, I hope Melancon nails down a late inning role and is a dependable arm for the next year and a half
