No doubt - my point was that if there's $60 million burning a hole in AA's pocket (as Bowman appears to think), he doesn't need to shop in the bargain bins to fill any of our holes. He can just go out and sign whomever he wants and could use the prospects as depth or use them to build that much more depth. For example, sign Pollock/Cutch and trade for Peralta for the corner spot (~ $20 million), trade some of the high-end prospects for another SP (deGrom's projected to make $13 million, Paxton $9 million, Wheeler < $6 million), sign Moustakas for one year to pair with Camargo (~ $10 million) and Zook or Maldonado for one year to pair with Flowers (~ $5 million), plus add Britton to the pen (~ $13 million) - ALL for just over $60 million if it really is available.

Then you have that deep bench everyone's been talking about - Flow/Zook or Maldonado, Pollock or Cutch/Peralta, Moustakas/Camargo, Culberson.

I just don't think there's any way the flexibility for all that is there any more than anyone else does.

Just because you have the financial flexibility doesn't mean you should spend it foolishly. See, Padres, Rox, and Phillies last off-season.

Agreed. With the Braves' window opening, which one of those moves would be "foolish"?

One year for Moustakas simply buys time for Riley. One year for Zook/Maldonado simply buys time for A-Jax and Contreras. Trading for two years of Peralta simply buys time for Pache/Waters. You hate to spend money on the back-end, but Britton's likely a monstrous upgrade if he's healthy, and Vizcaino comes off the books following 2019.

Pollock's a huge injury-risk, but you'd be hedging that bet somewhat with Peralta.

There's potential downside to EVERY signing out there, but the organization went through the pain of the rebuild to put themselves in the position to be able to spend on the last piece or two that could put it over the top. Should they just not spend at all since free-agents come with risk attached? If they don't, we've already seen them be as good as they will be.

Schwarber and Duvall platoon for LF. Duvall is a good outfielder and a way better hitter than he was last year.

Duvall is a better hitter than he showed last season (probably had some bad luck) but that doesn't mean he's a good hitter. It's pretty clear his bat is slowing (power way down, infield flies way up). Hitters like him often decline sharply at about 30 so it's no shock.

My guess is Duvall probably should have hit about .225 this year instead of .195. That's not good and will likely be worse next year. He should be DFAd.

So bowman is suggesting the Braves will have an opening day payroll of $140M? We will know soon enough how much he knows.

I’m guessing he doesn’t understand the difference between opening day payroll and the total amount spent by the end of the season on the entire 40 man roster.

It would be a pretty big surprise if the opening day payroll tops $120M by any significant amount.

He figures in the $135m area...figuring a 4% bump plus a few DFAs

bowman is conflating opening day payroll with full season payroll...as a result his numbers are about 15M too high

For purposes of discussion and trying to guess what AA might do, we should assume he's got about 45M to play with to construct the opening day roster.

    Realistically, sure.

Not sure what harm there is in dreaming on Bowman's number on October 22nd - it's fun even if it's not realistic. Is it really costing anyone sleep? If so, they might want to re-think how much weight they put on spending time on an internet message board - and check with their doctor about getting a prescription to help with their blood pressure.
